6th Annual SuperFam Comes to South Lake Tahoe

Visit California’s annual “California SuperFAM,” in conjunction with British Airways, returns to the Golden State, October 10-17, 2013 for the sixth consecutive year. Sixty travel agents from the United Kingdom and Ireland will get the VIP treatment on this fast-paced, educational and entertaining California familiarization (“fam”) tour. Split into five groups, agents will embark on five different themed itineraries designed to allow them to experience all that California has to offer firsthand – from Southern California and the Desert to the North Coast and High Sierra.

Charlie Johnston of Sparks Takes 1st Place in Lake Tahoe Marathon

Two hours and 50 minutes was all that was needed for Charlie Johnston of Sparks, Nevada to finish the Lake Tahoe Marathon on Sunday. He led a pack of 271 runners over the 26 mile course from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe. Kristin Walstad of Alta, CA was the top female finisher with a time of 3 hours and 13 minutes.

The Lake Tahoe Marathon events also included kayaking, swimming, double marathons, 72 mile race - 22 races in total.

Lake Tahoe Marathon is More Than Just a Race

For some, their only connection to the Lake Tahoe Marathon is the billboard sign they see attached to a pick up around South Lake Tahoe. For others, it’s an amazing series of races that fill the south and west shore for several days every fall.

The man behind the race is Les Wright, long time South Lake Tahoe local. It is tough to find time to talk to Les these days. He is working 18 hour days and the time left for rest finds his mind full of marathon details, planning and organizing.

Philanthropy on Display at Tahoe Fund Annual Dinner: Over $300,000 raised

The love and support of Lake Tahoe was on full display at the Tahoe Fund annual Founders Circle dinner on Sunday August 18. They raised more than $300,000 for the organization and four Signature Projects around the Lake. Tahoe Fund donors were joined by Senators Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid and Governors Jerry Brown and Brian Sandoval, as well as special surprise guest Vice President Al Gore, as the public and private communities joined together to celebrate the work of the Tahoe Fund to restore and improve the Lake Tahoe environment.

Firefighters snuff attic blaze at Emerald Bay Road restaurant

South Lake Tahoe firefighters were able to contain a fire in the attic of Lake Tahoe Pizza Co., in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road on Monday night.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, said South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Shift Commander Rob Hembree in a news release. No injuries were reported.

The fire department responded at 11:09 p.m. Other responding agencies were the Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CalFire and Tahoe Douglas Protection District.

Body of teenage boy recovered from Emerald Bay

A teenage boy died of an apparent drowning in Emerald Bay on Friday while he was attempting to swim to Fannette Island, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office reports.

Javon Lamar Green, 17, was with his family in a rental boat when he went under water. The family estimated the distance to Fannette Island to be about 25 yards away from their boat, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Matt Underhill.

His body was recovered Saturday morning, around 9:45 a.m. by the EDSO Dive Team in approximately 72 feet of water.

Three days of running and more planned for 18th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon

More than running occurs at the annual Lake Tahoe Marathon, Sept. 27-29. The point-to-point runs pass some of the world’s greatest scenery in both states.

Challenges await half and full marathoners as they climb and descend along Lake Tahoe’s western shore in California heading toward South Shore. The run includes the switchback hills near Emerald Bay. Participants of the 10K will also experience some of the stunning vistas by starting at Inspiration Point above Emerald Bay.

The Tahoe Fund, the first and only nonprofit in the Tahoe Basin dedicated to raising money for environmental improvement projects, announced Wednesday the appointment of Timothy Cashman as chair of the board of directors.

Tahoe Fund launches 2013 signature environmental improvement projects

The Tahoe Fund is kicking off its 2013 fundraising season with the announcement of four 2013 Signature Projects that will help restore Lake Tahoe clarity and improve recreation in the Basin.

The projects include beach improvements at Sand Harbor State Park, Asian Clam control in Emerald Bay, a mile of bike trail along the West Shore, and a new bridge across Angora Creek in the Washoe Meadows State Park. South Lake Tahoe police reports recent surge in auto thefts, attempted thefts

During the nine days of July, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has investigated several thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles in the City. The targeted victim vehicles appear to be vans in particular.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center opens cancer treatment center in South Lake Tahoe

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center opened a new cancer treatment center at 1154 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe July 1, 2013.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art oncology and hematology facility now offering treatment in five locations including Carson City, Fallon, Gardnerville and Sparks. The South Lake Tahoe facility will expand the reach of Sierra Nevada Cancer Center making cancer treatment more convenient and closer to home for those living at the Lake.

South Lake Tahoe man admits to Sunday burglary at South Shore Bikes

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man following a burglary Sunday of South Shore Bikes on Emerald Bay Road.
Lee Sparks, 34, was arrested early Monday at Barton Memorial Hospital and admitted to the burglary and taking a bike, South Lake Tahoe police report.

Sparks was at the hospital being treated for cuts to his arms. Blood was found at the business where officers noted Sparks allegedly had forced entry into the shop through a roof event and exited through a window.

Copper thieves stole an estimated $50,000 worth of pipes from Camp Concord. The January crime is similar to the thefts that occurred last fall at Emerald Bay and D.L. Bliss state parks.

Scientists assemble five acres of mats for Tahoe Asian clam project

Rubber barriers bound for the lakebed of Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay are being assembled at the University of California, Davis, as part of the biggest Asian clam control project in the lake’s history.

The invasive clams threaten the lake's health and famed clarity.

UC Davis scientists, staff and students are unfolding the long, black mats and enhancing them with rebar, brass grommets and valves that will hold the barriers in place underwater and enable scientific analysis of the project.

Six-week Asian clam control project begins at Emerald Bay

Boaters heading to Lake Tahoe in the next six weeks may experience a short delay when entering Emerald Bay due to an Asian clam control project that will be taking place there.
The Asian clam control project is being implemented by a team of partners from the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Program, with plans to treat an area of up to 5 acres at the mouth of Emerald Bay. Treatment will be accomplished by covering the infested lake bottom with thin rubber barriers, augmented with organic material, that reduce the available oxygen and smother the clams. It will be the largest project of its type in the history of Lake Tahoe.

Free Concert at the Hempen' Inn this Sunday

An outdoor free music concert is being held this Sunday, September 30 as a means to raise funds for Adam Rose. On August 21 of this year, Adam was riding his bicycle and was struck by an alleged drunk driver at 12th Street and Emerald Bay Road. He was care-flighted to Reno, was in critical condition for approximately two weeks and is now recuperating at home. Both Adam's arms and legs were broken and he is currently confined to a wheelchair. He faces over six months of rehabillitation. He will be present at the event.
