Nine Decades of South Lake Tahoe Memories

Movies were in a Quonset hut where movie goers had to bundle up to fight the cold. Lake Tahoe was full of one way roads and a 2 room school. The switchboard operator knew where all 50 winter residents were at all times. Cattle walking down Highway 50.

The history of the south shore came alive last week at the Camp Richardson Lodge during the Lake Tahoe Historical Society’s “Do You Remember?” series.

3 Cars Stolen in 16 Hours in South Lake Tahoe; 3 Suspects Arrested

Three Placerville 18 year olds have been arrested in connection with three auto thefts that took place in South Lake Tahoe between 7 p.m. March 31 and 11 a.m. April 1. The trio is also suspected in stealing contents from other cars as well.

Brian Barnes, Elija Kidwell and Sean Murphy were arrested and book into El Dorado County Jail on felony charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy for at least one of the auto thefts and to some of the property thefts.

Barton Hospital Now Smoke Free; 8 Week Smoking Cessation Class Offered

Starting April 1, all Barton Health buildings became smoke free. The smoking and tobacco ban includes all Barton Health facilities, parking lots, grounds, and Barton Memorial Hospital. All patients, visitors, medical staff, vendors, and employees will not be allowed to smoke at Barton. This includes the use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, marijuana smoking, and smoke-free tobacco products such as chewing tobacco. The one exception will be for the two current patients at the Skilled Nursing Center who smoke. No further smoking patients for the center will be accepted.

After months of building, remodeling, planning and prepping, Sonney Bruning has opened "Sonney's BBQ Shack" in South Lake Tahoe.

"We've redone everything from the plumbing to the beer chiller, from the furniture to the floors," Bruning said while taking an unusual break right before the restaurant's soft opening March 22.

Two Hiking Groups Get Lost In South Lake Tahoe Area Friday; Both Found Safe

El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue teams were called out twice on Friday evening, once to the Cascade Falls area and the other to Vikingsholm.

The first call came in just before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Two women from Illinois were hiking near Cascade Falls and became lost. They called 911. While waiting to be located, the women came across other hikers who assisted them in returning to the camp ground where they were met by Search and Rescue at approximately 6 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Wayfinding Workshop to focus on signage for Nevada side of the South Shore

Members of the public are invited to participate in a workshop on March 17th hosted by TahoeChamber. This workshop will focus on potentially missing or duplicative highway signs between Cave Rock and Stateline and up Kingsbury. The primary purpose of NDOT’s highway signs is to safely guide drivers to the next city or town. The chamber is interested in discussing additional destinations such recreation in light of the large number of visitors, including those who are from out of the area with many of those not speaking or reading English.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Asks: What Do You Want to See at the Y?

Several South Lake Tahoe residents showed up at the presentation of the Tahoe Area Plan at the airport on Thursday. Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.

The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.

World Spay Day Celebrated at Lake Tahoe Humane Society Open House

Prescribed Fire Operations Continue in Lake Tahoe This Week

There will be several controlled burns around west and south shore of the Lake Tahoe basin beginning on Tuesday, February 4.

In South Lake Tahoe, the prescribed burns will take place on the east side of Tahoe Mountain, the south side of Highway 89 near Camp Richardson, and off of North Upper Truckee Road in the Angora fire area south of Mule Deer Circle.

With a lack of winter storms in Lake Tahoe and the usual snow that accompanies them, visitors are looking for things to enjoy during their visit.

The calm water and mild days have been perfect for fishing, whether its boat fishing on Lake Tahoe or ice fishing on the frozen lakes in the area.

I ran into a group of fisherman just ending their venture onto the lake with Tahoe Sport Fishing on Tuesday. The group of men were from Australia, South Africa, Los Angeles and Sacramento and by the looks of their smiles and their catch, they had a great time.

Prescribed Burns in South Lake Tahoe Resume Wednesday

There will be prescribed fire operations on Kingsbury Grade and at Emerald Bay resume on Wednesday, December 4. The U.S. Forest Service fuels management team announced that crews will burn about 10 acres per day on Lower Kingsbury near Meadow Lane, weather permitting. Operations are expected to continue through the weekend. In the Emerald Bay area near Inspiration Point, crews will burn approximately three acres over one or two days.

So. Tahoe Performing Arts Presents A Spook-tacular Spaghetti Dinner & Faculty Showcase

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

We found lots of things to enjoy while out and about in South Lake Tahoe today!

The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.

6th Annual SuperFam Comes to South Lake Tahoe

Visit California’s annual “California SuperFAM,” in conjunction with British Airways, returns to the Golden State, October 10-17, 2013 for the sixth consecutive year. Charlie Johnston of Sparks Takes 1st Place in Lake Tahoe Marathon

Two hours and 50 minutes was all that was needed for Charlie Johnston of Sparks, Nevada to finish the Lake Tahoe Marathon on Sunday. He led a pack of 271 runners over the 26 mile course from Tahoe City to South Lake Tahoe. Kristin Walstad of Alta, CA was the top female finisher with a time of 3 hours and 13 minutes.

The Lake Tahoe Marathon events also included kayaking, swimming, double marathons, 72 mile race - 22 races in total.

Lake Tahoe Marathon is More Than Just a Race

For some, their only connection to the Lake Tahoe Marathon is the billboard sign they see attached to a pick up around South Lake Tahoe. For others, it’s an amazing series of races that fill the south and west shore for several days every fall.

The man behind the race is Les Wright, long time South Lake Tahoe local. It is tough to find time to talk to Les these days. He is working 18 hour days and the time left for rest finds his mind full of marathon details, planning and organizing.

Philanthropy on Display at Tahoe Fund Annual Dinner: Over $300,000 raised

The love and support of Lake Tahoe was on full display at the Tahoe Fund annual Founders Circle dinner on Sunday August 18. They raised more than $300,000 for the organization and four Signature Projects around the Lake. Tahoe Fund donors were joined by Senators Dianne Feinstein and Harry Reid and Governors Jerry Brown and Brian Sandoval, as well as special surprise guest Vice President Al Gore, as the public and private communities joined together to celebrate the work of the Tahoe Fund to restore and improve the Lake Tahoe environment.

Firefighters snuff attic blaze at Emerald Bay Road restaurant

South Lake Tahoe firefighters were able to contain a fire in the attic of Lake Tahoe Pizza Co., in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road on Monday night.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, said South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Shift Commander Rob Hembree in a news release. No injuries were reported.

The fire department responded at 11:09 p.m. Other responding agencies were the Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CalFire and Tahoe Douglas Protection District.

Body of teenage boy recovered from Emerald Bay

A teenage boy died of an apparent drowning in Emerald Bay on Friday while he was attempting to swim to Fannette Island, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office reports.

Javon Lamar Green, 17, was with his family in a rental boat when he went under water. The family estimated the distance to Fannette Island to be about 25 yards away from their boat, said El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Matt Underhill.

His body was recovered Saturday morning, around 9:45 a.m. by the EDSO Dive Team in approximately 72 feet of water.

The Tahoe Fund, the first and only nonprofit in the Tahoe Basin dedicated to raising money for environmental improvement projects, announced Wednesday the appointment of Timothy Cashman as chair of the board of directors.

Tahoe Fund launches 2013 signature environmental improvement projects

The Tahoe Fund is kicking off its 2013 fundraising season with the announcement of four 2013 Signature Projects that will help restore Lake Tahoe clarity and improve recreation in the Basin.

The projects include beach improvements at Sand Harbor State Park, Asian Clam control in Emerald Bay, a mile of bike trail along the West Shore, and a new bridge across Angora Creek in the Washoe Meadows State Park.
