How much are you willing to pay for parking fines around Lake Tahoe?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you are accustomed to paying premium prices for parking in towns like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento, how much would you be willing to pay for a parking ticket in Lake Tahoe?

Apprently whatever it costs.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued 297 parking citations along SR89 at Emerald Bay in July and 273 during the first 11 days of August. Six vehicles were towed from the area during this time.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra and El Dorado County roadwork July 26 - August 1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The following is a list of the long term and short term projects the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled for the week around Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra and El Dorado County.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

Column: Wildfire threat still looms

If the 4th of July weekend is any indication, Tahoe is under pressure. As coronavirus cases grow nearly everywhere, people naturally look to the mountains, fresh air, and clear water of Tahoe as a respite. Now residents and visitors alike are struggling to adjust to the confusion around re-opening, and visitation that is normally our lifeblood is suddenly a health risk.

Inversion brings unusual heavy fog to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Fog is normally associated with San Francisco and the coastal cities of California, not with Lake Tahoe.

On Friday and Saturday, a strong inversion was in place at around the 7,000-7,500 foot level, compressing the molecules that normally evaporate off of the lake and keeping them trapped closer to the ground and the lake.

Inversions exist on a fairly common schedule, but the experience the past two days was different for a couple of reasons:

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Possible rain/snow on Tuesday and weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a break between storms with a quiet weather pattern in place over the next couple of days, though the potential for morning fog remains at the beginning of the week. A weak weather system could bring light snow showers to the mountains from late Tuesday into Wednesday with a return of another atmospheric river system with high snow levels that could arrive by Friday.

Snow blankets Lake Tahoe after wet storm passes through

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road controls are dropping on many of the Sierra's highways as the latest of storms passes through. Rain prevailed for much of the weekend, but not before ski resorts received a foot of new snow.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 12" of new snow, Sierra-at-Tahoe 14", Kirkwood 12" and Squaw Valley 16" in the last 24 hours. The West Slope experienced an afternoon and evening of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and fog. Lake Tahoe is forecast to receive some of that freezing fog on Sunday night.

In Lake Tahoe to enjoy the snow? Be aware of where you park and play!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow has fallen and the kids are out of school so it's time for many to hit the Sierra. Skiers and boarders have the slopes but where do sledders and those just wanting to play go?

Many stop on the highway and pull onto the shoulder (well, sort of) and head to the patch of snow. This behavior is causing problems for law enforcement, other drivers and is an accident waiting to happen.

South Lake Brewing celebrates beer and community

Many head to the cooler at their local beverage purveyor, perhaps never thinking of the process involved in getting that beer from the brewery to their lips.

This week, South Lake Brewing Company canned 4,800 cans of three types of beer, their already famous Fog Nozzle and Angora IPA, along with their Pillow Line Pale Ale. This was their second canning since opening in May, 2017, and it was also their biggest.

Chain controls on Sierra roads; slick conditions causing travel issues

Tow trucks are being kept busy tonight as many drivers are finding difficulty navigating roads around Lake Tahoe. There are currently areas of freezing fog and heavy snow, with whiteouts on some higher elevations roads. With this being a holiday weekend, expect more traffic than normal.

Foggy start to the day in Lake Tahoe; Forecast shows sunny and warming

The fog was socked in around Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning, but its starting to recede and retreat and should be all clear by noon.

It isn't often when the temperature of the lake is warmer than the air, but that is what happens when fog is created. The cold air mass condensates into clouds and sits low over the lake and South Lake Tahoe. The ski resorts were sitting above the fog and had a very sunny morning.

Picture of the Day: Valhalla Fog

Many thanks to Lee Vestal for his photo of the fog that hit Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning. He was at Tallac historic site and calls this "Valhalla Fog."

Warming temps for South Lake Tahoe

Clear skies and light winds are expected through the coming week as a ridge of high pressure along the west coast gradually strengthens, leading a slow warming trend.

Aside from some freezing fog near Truckee and the Sierra Valley, benign conditions remain on tap for the near future as that high pressures continues to build. According to some modules, there is the potential for cooler and wetter weather toward the end of the first week of October, but in the meantime its dry with above normal temperatures by the weekend.

Here is the forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:

Plastic, light and sound pollution focus of movie screening in Lake Tahoe

Low inversion layer keeping smoke from prescribed burns near ground

Smoke from local prescribed burns can be seen, and smelled, through much of South Lake Tahoe today. A cool night and low inversion layer have trapped the smoke closer to the ground than normal.

What most residents are experiencing is coming from a 69-acre prescribed burn area near Trout Creek that was ignited Friday. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department said there are no vegetative fires in the basin.

Smoke was especially heavy Friday night and looked much like fog while navigating many streets in the area.

Lake Tahoe not alone in dryness; San Francisco has first rainless January ever

The month ended with a sun-drenched bang Saturday, an apropos ending for what was the driest January on record in San Francisco.

Not one drop of measurable rain fell on city streets in January, the first time that’s happened in recorded weather history, which dates back to the Gold Rush.

Other Bay Area cities, including San Jose, saw at most two one-hundredths of an inch during the same time, which was probably just real heavy fog with a drizzle rather than real rain, said Jan Null, former lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service and a meteorology consultant.

Winter wonderland at Heavenly Mountain Resort

The word of the day: Pogonip.

That is what gave the top of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort the look of winter and fresh snow on Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a cloud deck around 8,000-9,000 feet was in place most of the night and the supercooled liquid droplets froze on the branches becoming a thick coating of frost.

Here is the definition of "pogonip" from Wikipedia:
