After a fun homecoming week, students of South Tahoe High School bare down for the upcoming week of midterms and testing. The fall sports season is coming to an end.

On Campus
Midterms are Thursday and Friday next week. Study labs are held after school for support and tutoring in different courses before the tests. Midterms mark the halfway point for the first term of the 2019-2020 year. The stress begins to increase, especially for the seniors.

Homecoming week is finally here. Locals and alumni, students and staff of South Tahoe High School prepare for the festive weekend. Students battled for school spirit and built floats, while a new homecoming king and queen are to be crowned under Friday night lights.

Students of South Tahoe High School got a taste of fall this week, as the weather brought rain and wind. Homecoming Week planning began, students learned about the impact of social media, and sports teams prepared to travel this weekend.

The Homecoming Parade is slated for October 12. Students plan on walking from T.J. Maxx to the high school to celebrate homecoming traditions. Ms. Russel’s leadership classes expect a big crowd and a fun day before the homecoming dance that evening.

South Tahoe High School had a slow week, as students began to settle in. On the other hand, the sports teams have a busy weekend.

The cross-country team is competing in a meet at the Nevada Union High School on Saturday.

“I can see great potential in everyone going forward and can’t wait to see what the team will bring to big meets, come the end of season,” said junior Carissa Buchholz, the current 3A Nevada state champion.

This week at South Tahoe High School, students enjoyed a short week with Labor Day Weekend and Back-to-School night. Seniors get prepared for their last year at STHS and multiple home games wrap up the week.

On Campus

On Thursday, seniors met in the STHS theatre with school counselors to discuss graduation requirements. With Google slides filled of tips and resources, counselors took questions from seniors, helping them prepare for their final year.

Welcome back to The Viking Corner. The South Tahoe High School 2019-2020 school year has officially begun. As freshmen enter a new chapter in their lives, fall sports begin, and seniors try to make their last year memorable.

Freshmen First Year

Incoming freshmen came to campus on Monday to organize their schedules, tour the campus, and see what’s in store for them for the next four years. Upperclassmen led the freshmen, making sure they were comfortable and answered their questions.

Letter: STPUD board members need to show up - Time for change

The night before football tryouts in the 9th grade I can still hear the advice my father gave to me before I tried, but failed, to get a good night’s sleep. He didn’t comfort me to tell me I would make the team, or tell me how great I was, he simply told me, “the only thing you can control, is that you can outwork everyone else.” This advice had an impact on me and ultimately led to everything positive in my life.

STHS tackle Logan Langemeier headed to Jacksonville University

South Tahoe High offensive tackle Logan Langemeier will be wearing the green and white of the Jacksonville University Dolphins football team this fall.

During an official signing ceremony at the school Wednesday, the 6'4" 240 pound senior credited his mom and his training for getting him to this point.

A football player since the age of eight, Logan said he tried soccer but fell in love with football through Pop Warner.

South Tahoe High football team holds inaugural golf tournament

South Tahoe Football is holding their first fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, September 30 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This even coincides with South Tahoe High's Homecoming weekend events.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

Following the tournament will be a luncheon and awards presentation.

The cost is $100 per golfer. Opportunities to host a hole ($100) or sponsor the tournament ($1000) are also available.

Victim identified in South Lake Tahoe collision: Memorial set for Friday

Arthur "Rocky" Heether has been identified as the man killed as he rode his bike across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The 64-year-old man was struck by a vehicle.

Arthur, or Rocky as he was better known, was born in Oakland, California on January 26, 1053. He moved to the South Shore in the early 70's and worked construction on many Tahoe projects.

Eleven South Tahoe High football players on Nevada All State teams

Eleven varsity football players from South Tahoe High are part of the 2016 Class 3A all-state football team.

First team honors went to four of the South Tahoe players. Senior Tommy Cefalu, who just signed to attend Eastern Oregon University next year as a student-athlete is the quarterback of the team. Senior wide receiver Noah Jackson, junior tight end McCallan Castles and junior cornerback Matt Cain were also honored for their play on the field.

South Tahoe High football team in Las Vegas for first state title bid since 1991

11/12 update: The Vikings' road to state has ended in Las Vegas. The boys from South Tahoe High suffered a crushing blow with a loss to Desert Pines, 56-7 in the 3A State semifinals.

For the first time in 25 years, the South Tahoe High football team is headed to the Nevada Division 3A State football championship games in Las Vegas this weekend. The Vikings are coming off a victory over rival Truckee to head to Vegas as the number two seed from Northern Nevada.

The 28-20 win over Truckee sends South Tahoe to their first appearance at the state playoffs since 1991.

Prep round-up for the South Shore: Whittell and South Tahoe Highs

The South Tahoe High boy's tennis team continues to dominate Northern Nevada action on the courts and are now preparing to take their 12-0 record to the Nevada state tournament which begins in two weeks. In the meantime, players head to the regional playoffs.

South Tahoe High's varsity football team is now in a three-way tie for second place in Northern Nevada 3A with their 6-1 record. They blanked Dayton during Friday's homecoming game at South Tahoe, 57-0.

Whittell Warriors crowned state champs after 53-48 win at Lawlor

For the second time in three years, the Whittell High School boys basketball team has won the Nevada state championship.

The win was the Warriors 25th consecutive win. They wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 27-2.

On Saturday at Lawlor Event Center at the University of Nevada Reno, Whittell beat Word of Life Christian Academy out of Las Vegas, 53-48, earning them the NIAA Division IV crown.

Whittell High's football team continues to roll towards state title

The undefeated Whittell Warriors football team won Friday's playoff game against Spring Mountain by a score of 48-26, earning them a spot in the Nevada State Championship game November 21. Whittell last won a state title in 1988.

Whittell took a commanding 34-18 into the locker room at half-time and never looked back.

They will meet Pahranagat Valley who beat Virginia City by a score of 76-32 Friday night. Both Whittell and Pahranagat Valley are 11-0 on the season. Pahranagat has won 92 games in a row so it should be a great game.

Whittell High's football team prepares for state semifinals

The Whittell Warriors are continuing on their road to the Nevada state title after beating Carlin High last week, 36-20. Whittell hosts the semifinals on Friday, November 13 when they play the Spring Mountain Eagles in a 6 p.m. game.

The Las Vegas team beat Tonopah in the first round by a score of 72-14. They are the #2 seed from the south coming into the game.

The #1 seed from the north, Whittell, spent the holiday shoveling and snowblowing off the football field in preparation for the game.

Whittell's football team 10-0 on year, beats Carlin to move to next round

The Whittell Warriors are entering next week's Nevada State Championship semi-finals as the number one seed after their 20-14 win Friday night over Virginia City.

This was the Warrior's first post-season home game since 1991. They get to do it again on Friday, November 13 when they host Spring Mountain, the number 2 seed from the South. Game time is 5 p.m.

Virginia City will play Pahranagat Valley on Friday as well. Their 7 p.m. game will be played at Alamo, Southern Nevada.

The road to playoffs for Whittell High School teams

The football team as well as girls' soccer and boys' cross country teams from Whittell High School all continue their seasons as State Tournaments approach.

Cross Country

Cole Snyder, a Whittell High School junior, is heading to State after coming in fourth at Saturday's NIAA Northern Region Division III/IV Championships at Rancho San Rafael in Reno. His time of 18:35 put him into the top 5 which earns him a spot at the November

Freshman runners Sam Rusk and Jacob Otterstrom placed 43rd and 47th respectively. Rusk had a time of 26:00 and Otterstrom had 28:13.

Whittell's football team remains undefeated as they head into playoffs

Much as they've done all season long, the Whittell High School's football time crushed Smith Valley Thursday night, 70-8, on their home turf.

The Warriors scored 42 points in the first quarter, followed by 28 more points before Smith Valley was able to put points on the board.

Whittell wrapped up their season 9-0 overall, 7-0 in league action.

South Tahoe High Vikings win first football game of the season

The South Tahoe High Vikings Football team hosted the Lowery Buckaroos on Friday night in a game that earn the hometown boys their first win of the season.

After close losses to El Dorado (35-32) and Spring Creek (33-27), the Vikings were ready for a win.

Quarterback Tommy Cefalu threw one touchdown pass to Darren Jackson, followed by one on the ground for Jackson and two more rushing touchdowns by Noah Jackson.

The final: 27-0.

Next up for the Vikings: Next week's homecoming game against Wooster at STHS Friday night. Varsity starts at 7 p.m., JV at 4:30 p.m.

Two El Dorado County JV football players hospitalized after game

Union Mine High School sophomores Nick Brown and Justin Schwartz had just finished leading their junior varsity football team to a 27-8 win over Foothill High School on Friday night when people noticed something wasn’t quite right.

Then Brown passed out, said El Dorado Union High School District Superintendent Stephen Wehr.

The two were rushed to the emergency care, Brown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Schwartz to Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center, according to Wehr.

Two South Lake Tahoe financial advisors form new partnership

Whittell High football team celebrates Homecoming with win, record now 9-0

The Whittell Warriors celebrated Homecoming Thursday night with a win over Excel Christian our of Sparks, NV. Their record is now 9-0. The score isn't in yet and will be posted as soon as received.

Next game for the undefeated team from the South Shore October 30 against Virginia City. The home game will start at 7 p.m.

Prep roundup for Whittell and South Tahoe High Schools

The Whittell Warriors Varsity football team improved their record to 8-0 after a double overtime win over Mineral County on Friday night. The Warriors fell behind in the first quarter 22-8 and went into the locker room at half time trailing 44-22. At the end of regulation play the score was tied at 44 after Whittell came back with two touchdown passes by Colin Buchholtz late in the game. Max Primo's 6 yard rushing TD in overtime was followed by a pass by Buccholtz to Armando Rodgriquez for a touchdown put Whittell on the win column with a final score of 56-50.

South Tahoe High football team gets first win during homecoming celebrations

A pep rally and a parade through South Lake Tahoe started off the South Tahoe High homecoming festivities on Friday afternoon which culminated in a convincing win on the gridiron for the varsity Viking football team.

Looking for their first win during the 2014 football season, South Tahoe took their 0-6 record to the field against the team from Dayton. They scored 28 unanswered points after Dayton started off the game with a safety.

South Tahoe loses at Spring Creek, Whittel beats Excel Christian

The Whittell Warriors have started their 2014 season much like they ended 2013, winning. The Varsity football team beat Excel Christian on Saturday by a score of 38-14, bringing their record to 2-0.

Senior Jake Sharp scored two touchdowns and carried the ball 14 times for a gain of 63 yards. Freshman Corey Huber scored once, ran for 109 yards on 13 carries. Huber also ran in an extra point and was on the receiving end of another.

High school sports kick off their first weekend in South Lake Tahoe

Are you ready for some football? Friday Night Lights are underway once again as the South Tahoe High Vikings take on the El Dorado Cougars on August 29. The JV game starts at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity starts at 7 p.m.

Viking Coach Kevin Hennessee has five seniors on his team, 24 juniors and two sophomores.

Both the Boy's and Girl's Cross County teams head to Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks for their meets.

On Saturday, the South Tahoe Girls Soccer teams take to the field. The Vikings host Montgomery in an 11 a.m. JV game and 1 p.m. Varsity match up.

Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic Brings Out the Stars July 13-14

NFL Hall of Fame members Marcus Allen and Mike Haynes will join Cy Young winner Vida Blue and other sports stars at the 6th Annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at Gray's Crossing in Truckee July 13 to 14.

The tournament is held to pay tribute to Hall of Famer and former Oakland Raider and Lake Tahoe resident Gene Upshaw and raise funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injuries. Upshaw golfed often at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe before his sudden death from pancreatic cancer in 2008, just 3 days after being diagnosed.

South Tahoe High Football Team's Season Opener moved to El Dorado High

The South Tahoe High School's Viking Football team will now travel to El Dorado High School for Friday's game instead of hosting the season opener. Due to smoke in the area, all other teams in the league have cancelled their games, but since the Viking's opponent is out of the area it was decided to move the game.

Vikings fall short in home opener under lights

A fast start didn't translate into a strong finish for the South Tahoe High School football team in its season home opener on Friday night.

Churchill County scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half to pull away for a 53-17 Northern 3A victory in a game that marked the unveiling of the Vikings' renovated stadium that now features Field Turf and permanent lights.

South Tahoe took a 14-7 lead in its opening two possessions as Jacob Stowell struck pay dirt on runs of 5 and 68 yards. Stowell rushed for 164 yards on 20 carries in the first half.
