This is an annual, late fall article on how to enjoy those tiny, irresistible, tasty gourmet treats known as pine nuts.
For those unfamiliar with them, they are the seeds of the Pinon Pine Tree, which is the official tree of the State of Nevada. The Pinon is a fairly short, bushy looking, rather unattractive, full-of-pitch tree and it is one of the main physical features of our Great Basin area.

Annual Winter Swap at MontBleu to support Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 23rd Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa at South Shore Lake Tahoe Nov. 18-19. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students.

More cold, some snow on the way

Another change in the skies over Lake Tahoe is in the forecast this week, the National Weather Service in Reno reports Sunday.
After a weekend of sunny blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the Lake Tahoe region, with possible periods of heavy snow, according to the weather service.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District Receives Report Card

South Lake Tahoe Unified School District recently received the Academic Performance Index scores for the year 2011.
The API Target is 800 or above. Overall, the district dropped one point from 2010 (781 to 780). Below are the detailed scores for each school:
The Magnet school dropped 4 points to 935 - However it is the highest score in all of El Dorado County.
Bijou went from 718 to 701, having made substantial gains from 689 in 2009.
Sierra House did well in gaining 13 points 813 to 836.

South Lake Tahoe Finance Department Recognized for Accounting

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada has awarded the City of South Lake Tahoe the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the City's FY 2010 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). According to a city press release, this certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

Remembering Fallen Soldier U.S. Army Spc. Garrett Fant

Garrett Fant, the 21-year-old U.S. Army soldier who died Sept. 26, 2011 in Afghanistan, left a legacy South Lake Tahoe can be proud of, friends and family say.  The young man, who attended South Tahoe High School and considered South Lake Tahoe his home, will be remembered for his personable nature and affable character. For as young as he was, he was a gentlemen and treated everyone around him with dignity and respect, including those he didn’t personally know.

Lake Tahoe casinos at Stateline continued healthy gains this summer, taking in $27.3 million in August, a 16.2 percent increase over 2010 figures for the same month, the Nevada gaming control board reports today.
Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $886,861,912 for the month of August 2011, 6.10 percent decrease compared to August 2010, when licensees reported a gaming win of $944,457,344. Gaming profits in Stateline in August 2010 were 23,518,599.
