With less than 40 days remaining until the November general election, U.S. House candidate Jessica Morse will be hosting town hall meetings for 4th district residents, including a stop in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, October 7.

California's 4th District stretches from the eastern Sacramento suburbs to the Sierra foothills, including Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. Morse is running against incumbent Republican Tom McClintock who, at this time, has no scheduled stops in South Lake Tahoe.

Boys and Girls Club celebrate 25th anniversary with online auction and golf tournament

Eveyone a winner as W.E. C.A.R.E Sports visits South Lake Tahoe schools

W.E. C.A.R.E. Sports has spent the week in South Lake Tahoe, visiting each elementary school thanks to a grant awarded by the Tahoe Women's Community Fund to bring the program to Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The Oregon-based organization helps support the physical development and social-emotional tenets for young children by teaching life skills and building self-esteem.

Every child is on an equal playing field as they are introduced to unique alternative sports in a positive non-judgmental environment where everyone wins.

5th annual Spolight Awards in Douglas County honor businesses

Seven Douglas County businesses, including two from the South Shore, were recently honored during the 5th annual Spotlight Awards, recognizing their contributions to the community.

The awards were given at the Critical Issues Conference held on Thursday, September 27 and recognized businesses in the following categories: retail, restaurant, manufacturing and production, sports and recreation, entrepreneur, business and professional service, and tourism and hospitality.

State schools chief visits California's smallest district - Alpine County

California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson is wrapping up his final term by touring some of the state's schools.

In just a few days he went from visiting a school in Los Angeles with an enrollment of 4,000 to touring Alpine County Schools and the Diamond Valley Elementary School campus, in particular, which has 80 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

“It is a small school in numbers but mighty in its focus and learning,” said Torlakson in Alpine County on Sept. 20.

Home severely damaged in South Lake Tahoe fire

10.3.18 update: The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has released their final report on the September 22 fire at a Sonora Avenue home.

According to their report, the exact cause of the fire could not be determined except that it started on the couch on the first floor.

Property loss is estimated at $200,000 with an additional $50,000 in contents loss. Smoke detectors were installed at the home and all went off when the fire started.

South Lake Tahoe cannabis sales could be delayed with possible referendum

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - September 21, 2018 is the date the City of South Lake Tahoe will start accepting development agreements for the six cannabis licenses up for grabs after City Council approved a cannabis ordinance on August 21, 2018.

That is, unless a group spearheaded by Cody Bass of Tahoe Wellness Cooperative and his attorney James Anthony gets enough signatures to stop the process.

Nevada Guard to commemorate IHOP victims in 5k run/walk

CARSON CITY — It has been seven years since shots rang out at the Carson City International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant, leaving four people dead and thrusting the capital city into tragedy still felt today. Of the four people killed, three were National Guard members and the fourth was a South Lake Tahoe resident.

City Council agenda includes renaming street policy, the budget and VHR report

The next meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council is Tuesday, September 4, 2018, starting at 9:00 a.m.

During the meeting they will discuss, and or vote on, the following topics:

The 2018-2019 Municipal Budget will be presented in a workshop. Discussion started in April for adoption this Fall. The largest expense in the budget is $640,000 which covers Animal Control costs. Salaries and benefits equal $27,387,222 of the
budget which is being presented as $86,487,692.

Pay It Forward Day at Beach House Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is 'Pay It Forward Day' at the Beach House Tahoe on Tuesday, August 27, a day where all profits are dispersed among their employees.'

As with other of restauranteur Ted Kennedy's restaurants, the money goes to the staff to do with as they wish, but the hope is that they will use it to help someone less fortunate in the community.

This is becoming a recurring event at another of Kennedy's restaurants, California Burger in the Heavenly Village.

Over 2,200 bags of food given to South Lake Tahoe youth this summer

It was another successful summer for the Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) team after they gave away 2,255 bags of food during their nine-week long program feeding local youth. This was almost double the number of bags given away the previous summer.

For three years, BB4K has given weekly backpacks of food to qualifying children at Bijou, Sierra House, Tahoe Valley, Magnet and South Tahoe Middle schools. During the 2017-18 school year, 5,449 backpacks of food were distributed.

It's back to school for South Shore students

It's back to school from youth at the south end of Lake Tahoe on Monday, August 27. Both Lake Tahoe Unified School Distrist and Douglas County School District open their doors and welcome back students for the 2018/19 school year.

All school offices are open and available to help with registration and scheduling needs and to pick up schedules.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Carson City for alleged 3rd DUI

A 52-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested in the area of North Curry and West Spear streets for felony suspicion of third DUI, driving on a revoked license, and following too close, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Ragan Allen Stacey was arrested after deputies responded to a two vehicle crash Saturday evening. Dispatch advised the driver of one of the vehicles was walking away from the crash, and deputies were able to locate him on North Curry Street.

Washington State University to offer hospitality degree at Lake Tahoe Community College

One more university is on board to offer bachelor's degrees at the new Lisa Maloff University Center at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Washington State University will be offering bachelor's degrees in Hospitality Business Management.

Representatives from Washington State University's nationally recognized School of Hospitality will be at the Lake Tahoe Community College for an information session on Wednesday, August 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the school's board room located in the library building.

All are welcome to this free session.

Lisa Maloff pledges money to get STEAM and gardening programs for LTUSD

Mrs. Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe, has offered a generous donation for STEAM and Garden Education for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). In the works since April, the LTUSD Board of Trustees today heard plans from two parents who have been working on the donation and ideas for implementation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) and gardening education in all South Lake Tahoe schools.

Alex R. Coryell was a watchman for the Virginia City Police Department from 1873 until June 25, 1891. Coryell was a Civil War veteran who left the state of Virginia after the war and moved to Virginia City, Nevada. His family became well known and prominent in Virginia City, with one of his relatives becoming a pharmacist on C Street.

Police ask for public's help in locating missing person in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 35-year-old man who was headed to South Lake Tahoe (SLT) to live and study has not been heard from, and his parents and the SLT Police Department are asking for the public's help in locating him.

Alexander Farquhar Mackenzie left his parent's house in Salinas, California in May of this year in a rental car, telling his parents he was headed for South Lake Tahoe.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe: Sean Pawling

On Sunday, 2003 South Tahoe High graduate Sean Pawling stopped by Revive Coffee & Wine to give an afternoon concert with his appropriately named band, The Sean Pawling Band.

In third grade at Meyers Elementary (now knows at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School), Sean said he knew he wanted to be a rock star so joined the inaugural season of the Blue Ribbon Choir. Since then he has taken his talents to UCLA where he majored in music and was the trombonist in the school's marching band, and then on to USC where he got a master's degree in music.

El Dorado County fires prompt evacuations

8:00 p.m. update: Omega Fire is 10 percent contained, reported at 80 acres with 1 destroyed residence and two damaged residences. The evacuation center has been relocated to Northside Elementary School, 860 Cave Valley Road, Cool, Calif.

The Bumper Fire is 80 percent contained and it has burned 67 acres according to CalFire.

Three fires started in El Dorado County Wednesday, prompting law enforcement to evacuate residents from several streets in the areas as firefighters fought the fire from both the ground and the air.

Former South Lake Tahoe couple loses home in Carr Fire

On Monday afternoon, people packed the civic auditorium to attend a community meeting to get answers to their pressing questions of evacuation orders, what’s next and who is in Shasta County to help.

One couple attending this meeting lost their home off Iron Mountain Road after living there for only 11 months.

You kind of go numb. You grab stuff like, ‘Why did I get that and not that that was right next to it?’ you know,” said Kathy Williams.

After her passing in 2002, a memorial garden was built to remember her warm, loving and caring personality.

Lisa Maloff University Center at LTCC opens in August

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local philanthropist Lisa Maloff, the "Angel of Tahoe," donated $5.8 million to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) back in November of 2014 for the creation of a University Center that would make four-year degrees a reality on the South Shore. The first shovels hit the dirt one year ago, in June 2017.

Will’s Kids for the Arts returns to South Lake Tahoe for 3rd year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now in its third year, Will’s Kids for the Arts is a FREE art fair for children on the South Shore, featuring arts and crafts booths and a performance by Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. Will’s Kids will take place on Friday, August 3rd W:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Valhalla Tahoe Estate. The performance begins at noon.

Chautauquan and noted local historian Michael Fischer will portray “Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr.” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 4, at 10:00 am.

H. F. Dangberg, Sr. helped to shape the agricultural and livestock history of Carson Valley. Beginning with 160 acres in 1856, Dangberg built an empire of ranches and farms that covered over 30,000 acres by 1902 when he formed the H. F. Dangberg Land & Live Stock Company. Some of the irrigation ditches, canals and reservoirs he dug are still in use today.

House fire in Meyers under investigation

A house fire in Meyers brought out crews from multiple agencies on Friday, July 13.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) responded to a structure fire call at approximately 11:04 a,m. Crews arrived to the scene on Kiowa Drive to find smoke and flames coming from the lower lever of the home. Firefighters initiated a fire attack and with the help of CalFire, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and North Tahoe Fire, crews were able to knock down the flames and extinguish the fire.

Suspicious car fire in Meyers

A fire destroyed a vehicle parked outside a Meyers residence early Tuesday morning. The call came in at 3:26 a.m. July 17, and Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CalFire and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) reponded.

The fire was contained to the vehicle which was parked on Zuni Street.

The incident is an active investigation on a suspicious fire, according to EDSO Sergeant Anthony Prencipe.

No other details at this point.
