Grant awardees to be celebrated at Tahoe Women's Community Fund Gala

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has invited the community to join them at their annual Grants Gala to celebrate the 2018 grant recipients as $68,000 is distributed to 13 non-profit organizations in the South Shore community.

The evening will also feature short presentations from the 2017 grantees on how they spent the collective funding this past year.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks LTCC ADVANCE

The LTCC ADVANCE Adult Education Program is a recently implemented program at the college whose focus is to train local adults with workforce skills aimed to lead to higher wages and greater employment options. ADVANCE is a collaborative network of local businesses, government offices and the K-12 LTUSD which offers the free instruction to local residents. In addition to helping adults improve their earning skills, the ADVANCE program wanted to help locals have access to a hot, nutritious meal by sponsoring a Bread & Broth Monday Meal.

Mother's Day Diaper Drive for month of May

Recognizing the fact that one in three American parents struggle to afford diapers, Choices for Children is hosting a Mother’s Day Diaper drive for the month of May in South Lake Tahoe.

Human trafficking presentation in South Lake Tahoe

Nationally recognized human trafficking consultant John Vanek will return to South Lake Tahoe for a May 18, 2018 presentation as a guest of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department and Live Violence Free.

Vanek, an author and retired lieutenant of the San Jose Police Human Trafficking Task Force, will speak on that date at Sierra Community Church at 6:00 p.m. Vanek is a leadership, collaboration, and anti-human trafficking consultant and speaker working with law enforcement agencies, non-governmental and community-based organizations, academic institutions and private sector companies.

"When Miners Sang" Presentation at the SLT Library

Author Gage McKinney will share with us the incredibly interesting tale of the hard-rock miners from Cornwall who came to America early in the 1800s to tap the continent’s rich mineral wealth. They were crucial to the California Gold Rush and settled in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevada. Along with their mining skills, they brought their folk music and especially their Christmas carols. Gage will describe the origins of this music, which was composed, performed and enjoyed by mining families, and is preserved today by their descendants.

Two classic movies focus of talks at Western Nevada College

Fifty years have elapsed since the release of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which creatively tried to make sense of the past and speculated about the future.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will review that 1968 blockbuster film and its impact on a generation during his presentation on Saturday, April 14 at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City. Thomas will also provide a lecture on “Old West Lawmen” on Friday, April 13 at the observatory.

"Paint and Sip" customized for Tahoe Valley Elementary students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Budding Van Goghs, Monets and O'Keeffes are honing their talents in the Tahoe Valley Elementary Library every Wednesday when Lake Tahoe Paint and Sip comes to help them them. Only thing different from the adult version of their unique painting classes is what is sipped.....the students get to sip water.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces winners of $68,000 in grants

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has announced the non-profit organizations on the South Shore who have been selected to receive grants in the amount of $68,000.

During their 2018 grant cycle, over 25 organizations applied for grants and 13 of them are being supported by TWCF and will be honored during their Grants Gala
on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Fundamental Freedoms art exhibit opening at LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College Art Department instructor Shelley Zentner brings her large-scale portraits inspired by stories of freedom and expression to the Fine Arts building’s Foyer Gallery in her exhibit, “Fundamental Freedoms.” Zentner will host an artist reception and talk on Thursday, April 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. inside the Foyer Gallery. Mayor of South Lake Tahoe Wendy David will officially open the exhibit at 6:30 p.m., followed by an artist’s talk from Zentner. Wine and canapés will be served, and all are welcome to attend.

Glowing reviews for South Tahoe High as accreditation team finishes visit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three member visiting accreditation committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) finished up their review at South Tahoe High School (STHS) today, parting with very positive comments about their experience.

"It is amazing what I've seen in two years," said Cheryl Townsend, Director of The Reach School in Sebastapol, Calif., and the only member of the accreditation team that originally reviewed the school in 2016. "There is a great level of intensity and quality at this school, give yourselves a hand."

El Dorado County buildings and library closed in South Lake Tahoe

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded $25,003 towards programs in the local community that benefit youth during a luncheon on Wednesday, March 14.

AlertWildfire mountaintop camera network tracked 240 western wildfires in 2017

Mountaintop cameras from the University of Nevada, Reno spotted or tracked 240 fires in Nevada and California in 2017. This helped to keep firefighters more situationally aware and able to mount appropriate responses more rapidly over tens of thousands of square miles of forests and rangelands, including rural communities.

This is a new and expanding tool for fire managers who oversee the wildland and wildland/urban interface.

Master Gardener's workshops on growing food in Lake Tahoe

Learn how to grow vegetables in your Lake Tahoe garden this summer through a series of free workshops presented by the UCCE Master Gardeners. The classes are offered at both ends of the lake on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during May. This year's classes are potatoes, onions, raspberries, lettuce & kale, and tomatoes.

Each week will be a new theme. The workshops are all family friendly and attendees get to go home with plants for your home garden!

Classes will run from May 14 - June 14th, 2018 in the evenings.

Community hub brings together services for families in South Lake Tahoe

Fritzi Dangberg: The Adventures of a Nevada Gal at the SLT Library

Holocaust Survivor Leon Malmed at SLT Library

The story of Holocust survivor Leon Malmed will be told through the animated documentary "The Promise" at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Wednesday,February 21, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

A group of advanced animation students from the College of the Canyons spent he entire Spring 2017 semester bringing to life the memories of Malmed, a South Lake Tahoe resident.

During Nazi occupation of Northern France, between the years of 1940 and 1945, Malmed and his sister lived in hiding, saved by a French family. The film documents Malmed’s experience as a child during those years of the Holocaust.

Possible new home for South Lake Tahoe homeless warming room

At the last count there were 82 homeless persons and ten homeless families living in South Lake Tahoe, and to help protect them during the winter, the Lake Tahoe Homeless Coalition has operated a Warm Room in the city.

They too are now homeless and asked the City Council on Tuesday to move into the city-owned building at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard, the former home of Unity at the Lake church.

Dogs help students de-stress before finals at LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't your normal evening in the library at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) on Thursday. There was no librarian with the proverbial "shhhh." There was no quiet spot to study, and there was a table full of food and a lounge full of dogs.

Yes, dogs.

The volunteers from Lake Tahoe Humane Society who take their therapy dogs to Barton Health's Skilled Nursing Facility five days a week brought their dogs to the library as part of the school's quarterly De-Stress Night.

Boys & Girls Club proposes idea of new home to LTUSD

What is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.

Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.

An Old-Fashioned Holiday Open House at Dangberg Historic Park

An old-fashioned “Holiday Open House” returns to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park Saturday, December 9 and 16 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm both days.

The exhibit includes toys from the 1870s through the 1890s that were played with by Fred Dangberg, Jr., and his siblings, as well as numerous toys enjoyed by Fred’s five children and one grandson from the 1900s through the 1940s.

Public input sought on 3-year plan for Mental Health Services Act.

The Behavioral Health Division of the El Dorado County (EDC) Health and Human Services Agency invites the public to provide input on the County’s Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Three Year Plan Annual Update for Fiscal Year 2018/19. Community members can provide input by email, online survey or at an upcoming community meeting.

County to hold VHR meeting in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Tax Collector will be holding a meeting to discuss vacation home rentals (VHRs) in the non-city limits portions of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m. at the SLT library.

C.L. Raffety is holding the public meeting to discuss recent changes in the ordinance, and hear suggestions for amendments. Under consideration for changes include no sub-leases of vacation homes, signage requirements and looking at ways to eliminate clusters of VHRs in neighborhoods.

The South Lake Tahoe Library will be starting a new fiber art group that will meet on the first Friday of the month from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The group is open to those who enjoy knitting, crocheting, embroidery, hand sewing and other fiber arts. Learn some new tricks, share projects, ideas, and stories with others. Bring your current project or start a new one.

This is free and all skill levels are welcome. Come and leave as needed.

Lake Tahoe Community College shines during accreditation team visit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The accreditation team visiting Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) left town Thursday, but not before speaking to a gathering of the school's administration, staff, students, board members and community partners.

"You guys do a great job," said Mike Claire, President at College of San Mateo and leader of the visiting accreditation team from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). "We have never found a college more well prepared than LTCC."

Win prizes during Library Card Sign-Up Month in South Lake Tahoe

October is Library Card Sign-Up Month at the South Lake Tahoe Library. During this month, the Library invites you to demonstrate your love of reading by visiting them. Either show them an existing library card, or sign up for a new one. All participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win great prizes!

Kudos: Local eateries support early care and education field

On Tuesday September 27, Choices for Children hosted an early care and education (ECE) open house. ECE students and child care providers toured and observed classrooms at the Lake Tahoe Child Development Center on Spruce Avenue in South Lake Tahoe and learned about Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS). They enjoyed pizzas donated by Primo’s Italian Bistro and decadent cupcakes donated by Cake by Grace.

Choices for Children would like to express a special thank you to Jim and Grace for their generous donation. It was very much appreciated and made the evening lovely.
