STATELINE, Neve - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will hear a presentation from the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority (TDVA) on the Tahoe South Events Center Project during their February 27 board meeting which starts at 1:30 p.m.

The presentation will include project updates, status and all project-related studies, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) approval process and related transportation funding requirements, financing package from all funding sources, and the proposed pledge by the Douglas County Redevelopment Area No. 2 (RDA #2).

Members of the Climate Crew, an environmental club at South Tahoe High School, attended the 2020 Citizens Climate Lobby Conference in Oakland last weekend.

Led by Lindsay Richardson, a teacher at STHS and advisor of the Climate Crew, eight seniors from the club took the four-hour drive to Oakland to hear new ideas on how to encourage the community and their peers to be environmentally friendly.

First up was the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) executive director, Mark Reynolds, with a passionate speech about the late founder and president of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Marshall Saunders.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-discussed 56-acre parcel in the middle of South Lake Tahoe is finally seeing movement again, and both the South Lake Tahoe City Council and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) supporting further conversation. A formal agreement between the two is expected later in 2020 with another one-two years of public meetings, consultant review, and planning before plans are implemented. The California Tahoe Conservancy is funding the cost of the consultant, just as they did 30 years ago.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The December edition of the City of South Lake Tahoe's "At Lake Level" has been released by City Manager Frank Rush. This month Rush covers SnowGlobe, the 56-acre site and a possible new Fire/EMS station for the community.

Now that the Thanksgiving holiday is over, as is Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday is here, time can shift to nonshopping activities like volunteering and charity donations.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world on December 3, 2019, and every day. There are several South Lake Tahoe nonprofits participating in GivingTuesday this year.

The South Lake Tahoe Branch of the El Dorado County Library will feature a display celebrating and honoring 100 years of the American Legion through November and December 2019.

The centennial display includes memorabilia from local American Legion Post 795, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The display can be viewed during open library hours Monday through Saturday. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

Join the Friends of the Library, in partnership with the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), as we ogle the amazing photographs (Bob discovered over 700 unique species) taken by Bob Sweatt last year for the Tahoe Wildflower Big Year (TWBY) which celebrates the hundreds of plant species that make the Tahoe region their home. This inspiring presentation will prepare you for all that Spring has to offer. Free and open to all.

Celebrate Bat Week. Sarah Hockensmith from the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science will share her love of Bats. Learn about these wonderful mosquito-eating creatures, their presence in our area and the contributions they make to the ecosystem. There will be bat specimens and we will listen to echolocation. Bring the kids! There will be treats but no tricks. Free and open to all.

AAUW-South Lake Tahoe welcomes our sponsored Tech Trek campers and junior counselor to talk about their experiences at the UC Davis camp in July. This is a wonderful opportunity for all interested in finding out more about the opportunity for girls who have completed the 7th grade to attend the STEM camp. The public is welcome to attend and learn more about our mission and activities for the year. Refreshments will be served. This meeting will be held in the Roberta Mason Library Board Room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The Lake Tahoe Community College, Foster Kinship Care Education Program offers presentations that are free and open to the community. The fall quarter is starting off with a series of Community Resource presentations. The public is invited to attend and hear about all of the services offered in the community.

Presentations will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Creekside Room. The presentation on September 24 will be in Room E-106. Here’s the lineup:

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Fifteen local health programs offered by nonprofits and agencies in the South Lake Tahoe area have been awarded grants by the Barton Foundation. A total of $50,000 was distributed among the groups to aid in their efforts to address the community’s most pressing health issues.

During the 2018 Barton Community Health Needs Assessment, the top health issues identified in the South Lake Tahoe community were access to care, mental health, and substance abuse.

The artists of My Thousand Words, Debbie and Rachel Lambin, are returning to show participants how to create amazing sculptures from used books and magazines. This classes focus will be creating a tree. This class is free and designed for adults. The books and sculpting materials will be provided. Join us for an incredible afternoon of creativity.

Join local author and artist Angelica R. Jackson as she shares how real-life places, like the former Preston School of Industry (aka Preston Castle) in Ione, have shaped her fiction. Angelica's Faerie Crossed series of young adult, urban fantasy novels include a fictional castle based on Preston and the surrounding Mother Lode area. Plus, her ten years of photographing the landmark building led to a book of art photos (along with some ghostly experiences).

Join the Friends of the Library as we welcome author Anne Penn. Ms. Penn, a relative of two of the murder victims, will discuss both of her books dealing with the Golden State Killer. Her first, Murder on His Mind, was written to try and help catch the criminal who the author knew was still in Sacramento. Her predictions turned out to be true. Ms. Penn will explain forensics, DNA and Genealogy in the final capture of the Golden State Killer. This is the true story of what we know about who this notorious killer is.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As a follow-up to their "Prepare to Evacuate" community meeting, the Tahoe Neighborhoods Group is joining forces to help the Tahoe Resource Conservation District (TRCD) bring a “Neighborhood Leader Orientation" meeting to South Lake Tahoe.

On August 21 at the El Dorado County Library in South Lake Tahoe from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., TRCD will focus on what it means to be a “Fire Adapted Community” and how neighborhood leaders can organize and hold neighborhood events to ensure that homes and communities are prepared and fire safe if/when a fire occurs.

Children are invited to create your own space rocket and launch it into the trees and beyond! Join the South Lake Tahoe Library at their Stomp Rockets activity on Friday, July 26 at 2:00 p.m. and become the next rocket scientist.

This is part of the Summer Reading Challenge at the library which is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Open to all school-aged children, supplies are provided.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is hosting another outdoor show on Friday, July 12 when "Kenn Adams' Adventure Theater!" comes to town.

Kenn Adams, Adventure Theater! is a fast-paced, interactive, outrageously funny, theatrical experience for heroes of all ages. Kenn will be performing this show “Adventure in Space” where the King is mad, the planet is doomed, and, the world needs a hero…like you!

The show starts at 2:00 p.m. on the lawn outside the library which is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is hosting another free outdoor show on Friday, June 28 when they welcome Tony Borders Magical Ventriloquist 2:00 p.m.

Tony Borders will be performing his show "It’s Showtime on Puppet Planet" which includes a mind-reading alien, tricks by Astro the Wonder Dog, and magic that is out of this world.

The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. The show is made possible by the Friends of the Library.

“The Dirt Around Lake Tahoe: Must-Do Scenic Hikes” takes readers on a journey to dozens of trails throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin and beyond. Alpine lakes, wilderness peaks and waterfalls are the rewards.

Author Kae Reed, who originally published these articles in Lake Tahoe News, will be a guest of the South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library on July 30. She will be reading from the book, signing copies and answering questions starting at 6pm at the library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

An exciting selection of wild birds and animals is headed to the South Lake Tahoe Library on Friday, June 21 at 2:00 p.m.

Wild Things, Inc. shares the animals with children along with a message of conservation and appreciation for wild animals. The event is sponsored by the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club.
