Letter: Bijou Garden Grows Community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Family Resource Center (FRC) has long been a stronghold for the South Lake Tahoe community, providing necessary life services to community members in need. This summer, the FRC was especially busy with the ninth year of Parabajitos, an early intervention and prevention program that aims to engage youth and strengthen their connection with their community. The FRC is also home to the Bijou Community Garden, a project started four years ago by community member Brian Hirdman.

Camp Buck gives kids with diabetes a unique and unforgetable experience

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Imagine you're ten years old and have just been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. No other students in your school have this disease, nor do any of your friends or family members. Insulin, glucose, pumps, blood testing, counting carbs are new words you now need to grasp and understand.

Facing life with this chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin is daunting, confusing, overwhelming.

An amazing group of Kirkwood crew members volunteered to serve at Kirkwood Mountain Resort’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment on Monday, July 23. “These young people were some of the best sponsor volunteers that we have ever had,” exclaimed Dana Tucker, the AAD Sponsor Crew Coordinator for the evening. “They were so happy to do anything that was asked of them.” Even at the end of the evening they all jumped in and dried the dishes to help clean up after the meal.

Bread & Broth serves two meals weekly and welcomes everyone from the Lake Tahoe Shore community to enjoy the wonderful dinners prepared by their talented and creative volunteer cooks and warmly served by our dinner crew volunteers. Our meals are not only meant to ease hunger, but to provide the opportunity to spend a meal in fellowship with other community members. Being hungry is not a prerequisite to enjoy the non-profit group's meals.

On Monday, July 2nd, Sunbeam Blind Company sponsored Bread & Broth’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment, and Kurt and Laura Rasmussen, Sunbeam Blind owners, crewed alongside of the B&B volunteers to serve 88 meals to very grateful dinner guests. Sunbeam Blind has been a sponsor every year since 2016 and B&B is very appreciative of their ongoing support of our AAD program.

Hosting their first Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino sponsored B&B’s Monday Meal on June 25th. It was really great having the newest hotel and casino on Tahoe’s south shore hosting a community dinner for the needy in the community. Hard Rock’s partnering with B&B demonstrates their commitment to being involved with the community and being a part of the solution to improving the quality of life for our community’s at risk population.

Free meals for South Lake Tahoe children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has once again been designated as an open site, providing breakfast and lunch at no charge to all youth 18 and younger beginning June 20, 2018 through August 24, 2018.

The program is funded through the Summer Food Service Program, a USDA/CDE funded program. The purpose of the Summer Food Service Program is to ensure that children continue to receive a healthy meal when school is out for the summer.

The students at Lake Tahoe Middle School have the opportunity to join Club Live which is an organization that promotes a healthy lifestyle by providing high energy alternative activities. For 25 years the Club has featured leadership events, community service projects, club meetings and recreational trips. For the past four years, Larry Lambdin, the Club’s mentor/leader, has had Club Live sponsor a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment and offer three to four of the clubs members the opportunity help those dealing with poverty.

The week of April 22 was Pay it Forward week. The Pay It Forward concept is all about people giving to someone else and making a positive difference.

Bread & Broth was very excited to have members of Barton Hospital’s Dietitian Department sponsor the Monday Meal on May 14th. So many departments from Barton Hospital host ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishments’ and they always send wonderful sponsor crew members to help at their sponsorship dinners. True to form, the five Barton volunteers, Rebecca Espinel, Jessica Keys, Lynn Norton, Kristine Travis and Jennifer Trew, were a joy to work with.

Every Monday of the year, the Bread & Broth volunteers collect donated food, setup a dining area in St. Theresa Hall, prepare and cook a tasty full-course meal, setup a dessert and drink area, and pack food ‘giveaway’ bags for the 65 to 100 dinner guests who show up for a free meal to which everyone in the community is invited to attend.

These wonderful meals are hosted by “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” sponsors who not only financially help cover the costs of the dinner but also send sponsor crew members who work alongside of the B&B volunteers to prepare the community dinner.

The LTCC ADVANCE Adult Education Program is a recently implemented program at the college whose focus is to train local adults with workforce skills aimed to lead to higher wages and greater employment options. ADVANCE is a collaborative network of local businesses, government offices and the K-12 LTUSD which offers the free instruction to local residents. In addition to helping adults improve their earning skills, the ADVANCE program wanted to help locals have access to a hot, nutritious meal by sponsoring a Bread & Broth Monday Meal.

Chef Mark Estee teaches teen healthy cooking classes, shares the recipes

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Mark Estee, chef and restaurateur, capped off a 6-month series of Healthy Lifestyles programming and curriculum at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s William N. Pennington Teen Center with a full menu of Local Mushroom Risotto, Panzanella Salad and Sabayon with Berries (recipes listed at the end of story).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over the last nine months, the Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club has sponsored five Adopt-A-Day of Nourishments. Bread & Broth has been thrilled to have this service oriented organization partner with us to help ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. With their generously donated funds and over 70 hours of volunteering, the Rotarians served over 450 nutritious, filling meals to grateful diners who come to Grace Hall for a free dinner and a chance to spent time with friends and acquaintances.

On March 29t, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal diners had a special treat, a delicious Filipino themed dinner. The evening’s meal was lovingly prepared and served by the Filipino Community members for their annual Adopt-A-Day of Nourishment sponsorship. This fantastic group served up teriyaki chicken and vegetables, chicken adobo, steamed rice, coleslaw topped off with delicious desserts to the 93 attending dinner guests. Needless to say, there were no ‘leftovers’ at the end of the meal.

The local Tahoe Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 has been an ongoing sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) and generously hosts two to three sponsorship dinners annually. Their most current AAD sponsorship was at Bread and Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on March 12, and thanks to their sponsorship, B&B fed 84 dinner guests a ‘home style’ meatloaf dinner served with mashed potatoes with gray, broccoli and a green salad lovingly cooked and prepared by the B&B’s wonderful volunteer cooks.

Healthy tips during National Nutrition Month

March is National Nutrition Month, a time to return to the basics of healthful eating. The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) invites all community members to make March their healthiest month yet.

“Whether you’re starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before a workout, the foods you choose can make a real difference,” said Theresa Fagouri, Health Education Coordinator for HHSA’s SNAP-Ed Nutrition Program.

SLT Rotary Club brings back dinner theater to Lake Tahoe Golf Course

After the success of last year's Dinner Theater, Lake Tahoe Golf Course has partnered with the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe to bring another adult farce to the community, Divorce Southern Style by Jennifer Jarrett. On March 23 and April 6 there will be 3-course, handcrafted meal served in the beautiful Lake Tahoe Golf Course Clubhouse on March 23 and April 6.

Experience “Purim in NYC” at South Lake Brewing Company

Chabad at Lake Tahoe, will be hosting two unique and exciting “Purim in NYC” themed Purim parties. The events will take place Wednesday, Feb 28, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton at Northstar and Thursday, March 1 at 4:30 p.m. at South Lake Brewing Company in South Lake Tahoe.

Celebrants at “Purim in NYC” will get a taste of all parts of Manhattan, including a NY Style Deli, Pickle Making in the Lower East Side, L'Chaim in Times Square, NYC Caricature Artist, Megillah Reading in Manhattan, and a “Masquerade in Manhattan” as it is traditional to dress up on this holiday.

Since 1989, Bread &Broth has been serving free hot dinners to thousands of diners every year. Beginning in 2010, the ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment’ program was put into place to encourage individuals, churches, organizations and business to join B&B in providing these needed meals as a service to the our community.

Tahoe Chamber event brings in $2,550 and food for Bread and Broth

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual Connect for a Cause on January 18 had a great turnout from the community, bring in both cash and food donations for Bread and Broth.

Over 100 people attended the charity mixer at Riva Grill and they enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodies during the event.

Bread and Broth serves the community with weekly food giveaways and two hot meals a week, and their Bread and Broth 4 Kids programs gives over 170 South Lake Tahoe children in grades K-8 a backpack of weekend food.

Returning for his second Adopt a Day of Nourishment sponsorship of the year, Jeremy Woodford hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on January 15th. Jeremy returned with Barbara and Craig Brittain who also volunteered at Jeremy’s January 1st sponsorship. This trio of helpers assisted the B&B volunteers in serving the 76 dinner guests who came to St. Theresa Grace Hall for a hot, nutritious meal. At the Mexican themed dinner, the diners had a choice of beef enchiladas, pork enchiladas, refried beans, festive veggies, green salad, fruit salad and a varies of pies, cookies and cakes for dessert.

The Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra is a service organization that dedicates its members to supporting charities and events which benefit the community, especially children. Every month the Kiwanis Club selects a different community program or organization to support, and for the month of January, the club has sponsored a Bread & Broth “Adopt a Day of Nourishment” for the last eight years.

Normally the Camp Richardson Resort staff is busy seeing to the needs of their many visitors and guests but during the month of December, they shift their focus to helping the members of our community who are struggling with hunger. Through their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship, Camp Richardson hosted Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall on December 18 and provided meals for the 100 dinner guests that evening.

With funds provided by Vail’s EpicPromise grants, Heavenly Mountain Resort partners with Bread & Broth to annually host six Monday Meal dinners at St. Theresa Grace Hall. Every other month, Heavenly sponsors an “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” and sends a team of volunteers to help crew at their sponsorship dinner On. December 11th, hosting their last AAD of the year, Heavenly’s volunteer sponsor crew was manned by Michelle Beall, Kelly Campbell, Chris Eckert, Katie Ficeto and Frank Papandrea.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge donates 50 boxes of food to local families

For seven years the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge 1632 has supplied boxes of food supplies for local families in need, and this year will be no different.

This week, members of the lodge will deliver 50 decorated boxes, each packed full of a ham, vegetables, canned goods, pasta, potatoes, bread, tortillas and everything else needed to feed a family a big holiday meal, and then more for leftovers.

This year's recipients will be selected by the Family Resource Center.

Five tips for a happier, healthier holiday season

The Holiday Season is an especially wonderful time of year. We look forward to holiday get togethers, to holiday meals, to good cheer and yes, treats. But we don’t look forward to holiday pounds. Many of our New Year’s resolutions are testament to our holiday eating patterns. We vow to start a diet, or to exercise more, or change habits. We know we often consume more than we should. So what can we do to reduce the unhealthy parts of the holidays, and keep the treasured parts?

Five new rules of healthy eating for kids

The conversations and attitudes we have with children about food can be linked to their eating habits. Use these new sayings developed by childhood obesity researchers to help guide children in a healthier direction during the holidays and beyond:

Law Enforcement Appreciation Week at many South Lake Tahoe restaurants

If you are a member of law enforcement, South Lake Tahoe is the place to be this week as you are being celebrated with free meals at several local restaurants.

In an effort to support police officers and deputies, and to recognize the challenges that they face every day, local restaurateur Ted Kennedy challenged other South Lake Tahoe restaurants to join him in honoring law enforcement with free meals.

Magical display of themed Christmas trees at South Lake Tahoe holiday event

The grand hall at MontBleu Casino Resort has been turned into a holiday paradise, a winter wonderland with the main attraction being the specialty Christmas trees.

On Thursday, local celebrities and media strolled by each of the designer trees, selecting those that won top honors of Most Elegant, Best Theme, Most Creative and Best of Show.

The excellent work on each made it almost impossible to come up with a winner, but four were chosen after much deliberation. Each tree will be paired with a special prize package during a live auction at Saturday's Gala.

South Lake Tahoe community treated to Thanksgiving dinner

The South Lake Tahoe community enjoyed a large Thanksgiving dinner Monday night during Bread & Broth's 28th annual holiday meal. Grace Hall was full of people and as of 5:00 p.m., 150 people had already gone through the line which featured turkey, mashed potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans and dessert.

The volunteers of Bread & Broth cooked 300 pounds of Turkey, 100 pounds of stuffing, 50 pies, 50 pounds of carrots, 90 pounds of green beans and bags of sweet potatoes.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner at Bread & Broth Monday

The Bread & Broth program at St. Theresa Catholic Church is observing its 28th anniversary of serving meals to community members in need by offering a special Thanksgiving dinner on Monday, November 20, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Grace Hall.

St. Theresa Grace Hall is located at 1401 Lyons Ave in South Lake Tahoe.

The meal is open to all members of the community just as it has been every Monday at Grace Hall since 1989.

Barton's 9th annual Festival of Trees and Lights

Each year, children of all ages stop by the Barton Foundation's Festival of Trees and Lights to ring in the holidays during one of the special events including Senior Stroll, Teddy Bear Brunch and the Gala.

From November 30 through December 3, the convention center at MontBleu Resort will transformed into a holiday paradise featuring beautifully decorated trees, wreaths and decorations and a gift shop with famous Barton cheese balls and unique presents.

Kirkwood Security Officers Mark DeSacia, Rick Hofheins and Charlie Noury and David McCullers, Security Manager, all volunteered their time and effort to make a difference in the lives of those attending the meal served at Grace Hall.

New program for family and friends of those with mental health conditions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in El Dorado County is among the first of the NAMI Affiliates in the nation to offer "NAMI Family & Friends," a new NAMI four-hour seminar.

"We are delighted to be able to provide an educational experience for those that care deeply about a family member or friend in the community," said Jeanne Nelson, NAMI El Dorado County President. "In just four hours the participants may walk away with some tools and techniques that could directly make a positive difference in the recovery process."

B&B’s Adopt A Day program provides individuals, businesses and organizations the opportunity to participate in hosting a hot and filling meal which provides nourishment and a welcoming and safe environment to any community member who attends a Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall.

Bread & Broth in need of food/cash donations for annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Five cases of viral meningitis in El Dorado County

Several viral meningitis cases have been reported from Susanville and Reno to El Dorado County.

As of November 2, 2017 a total number of four confirmed cases have been identified at Ponderosa High School in Shingle Springs and one confirmed case has been identified at El Dorado High School in El Dorado.

The school district has notified parents of the situation and extra cleaning has been done at the schools. Public Health is working closely with school staff and has notified county health care providers.

Two ways to help South Lake Tahoe area residents this Thanksgiving

Bread & Broth and Live Violence Free both have opportunities for the South Lake Tahoe community to help those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.

Bread & Broth is providing a free Thanksgiving Dinner to the community on Monday, November 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Church. This is the non-profit's 28th year of serving meals to those in need.
