Quiet Council Meeting Yields Interim Budget

The South Lake Tahoe City Council met Tuesday to pass an interim budget in an effort to have more time to work out labor negotiation and budget shortfall issues that have the community up in arms. There were no comments offered by council or the public, and the motion passed unanimously. Prior to the meeting there was a closed session for bargaining units to meet, and following was another closed session for council to hear the latest of the negotiations.

To a crowd of about 200, the South Lake Tahoe City Council met to hear the 2011-12 Budget Proposal from its city manager and finance director on Thursday. There was an obvious tension between the council and members of the public who attended the meeting, though the general sentiment of the council and city manager is that the deficit issues are not their fault, and that employee sacrifice is what is required to balance the budget.

Not only is this the first look the public will have at the proposed budget, but this may be the only opportunity for public input before layoffs in crucial departments like streets and recreation. Fourth Victim of Carson City IHOP Shooting Dies

The victim was a female member of the Nevada National Guard, had been flown to Renown Medical Center and had undergone surgery. To date, four victims have died (3 Nevada National Guard members and one civilian); the shooter has also died.

To streamline the review and deliberation of items crucial to the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday chartered a new committee to focus on update of the Plan.
The formation of this committee comes on the heels of the annual Lake Tahoe Summit where federal and state representatives urged swift completion of the plan update.
