The Seventh Annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show is coming back to the South Tahoe Middle School Multi Purpose Room on April 27 and 28, 2018. Produced by Golden Bear Events, the show will run from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.

A leading national weather conference, Operation Sierra Storm (OSS), returns to the South Shore January 21-24 and locals are invited to attend a morning of their presentations. OSS brings together national weather broadcasters and journalists, prominent scientists and experts.

Squaw Valley has created a nonprofit that will manage and distribute millions of dollars generated from the voluntary project transfer fee related to the approved redevelopment of The Village at Squaw Valley.

Named the Squaw Valley Foundation, a seven member board of directors will soon be selected and it's members will be a mix of local residents and business owners, second homeowners and a public service district appointee.

What is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.

Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – The winners of the 10th annual Blue Ribbon Awards were announced Thursday night at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Over 300 community members attended to celebrate the winners of seven awards that honor outstanding South Shore businesses, organizations and individuals for civic contributions, tourism experiences, customer service and entrepreneurial achievements.

Bread & Broth and Live Violence Free both have opportunities for the South Lake Tahoe community to help those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.

Bread & Broth is providing a free Thanksgiving Dinner to the community on Monday, November 20 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Church. This is the non-profit's 28th year of serving meals to those in need.

Bread & Broth, an all volunteer organization whose mission is to ease hunger in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community, has volunteer opportunities for those who are looking to give back and join their ‘heart warming’ efforts to help others.

Bread & Broth (B&B) has grown over the last eight years and now offers the following programs:

- Monday Meal, which is a full-course dinner service every Monday at St. Theresa Grace Hall from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Second Serving at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church which provides soup and a simple entrée every Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

An Affordable Housing Task Force has been formed to assist Douglas County in its efforts to develop quality affordable housing opportunities. This has been in the works since July when they entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nevada Rural Housing Authority “For Creating a Viable Path to Achieving Affordable Housing for Douglas County, Nevada.”

Part of the Board of County Commissioners Strategic Plan includes evaluating the potential of offering affordable housing development incentives through the update of the Housing Element of the Master Plan.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office now has a designated E-commerce Exchange Zone for members of the public looking for a safe, neutral location to complete online transactions.

Two parking spaces in front of the Sheriff’s headquarters at 911 Parr Boulevard in Reno are reserved specifically for e-commerce transactions. Those spaces are located near the front of the parking lot, in a well-lit area subject to 24-hour video surveillance.

For the fourth consecutive year, several Douglas County businesses were awarded a Spotlight Award. This year’s awards were given at the Critical Issues Conference held on Thursday, September 28, 2017. The Spotlight Awards recognized businesses in 7 different categories: Retail, Restaurant, Manufacturing and Production, Sports and Recreation, Entrepreneur, Business and Professional Service, Tourism and Hospitality and special recognition was given to the Business Council for their 25 years of dedicated service to Douglas County.

Now is the time to toot their horn as the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Awards nomination period has opened. Each year the Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition honors those who have helped the bicycling community around the lake have a safer, better ride.

Nominations must be submitted by October 15, 2017.

Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 30, with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping on Saturday night, and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Thanks to the San Francisco-based non-profit Mission Asset Fund (MAF), scholarship funds are now available to cover the costs for California community college students who need to renew their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrives (DACA) status before the upcoming October 5 deadline. MAF, which has a long history of supporting Dreamers, has dedicated scholarship funds specifically to help California community college students, along with CSU and UC students, pay for the $495 DACA renewal fee.

The 26 members of the 2017-2018 Leadership Lake Tahoe class have been announced. They will start their ten-month long journey on September 13.

South Tahoe Football is holding their first fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, September 30 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This even coincides with South Tahoe High's Homecoming weekend events.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

Following the tournament will be a luncheon and awards presentation.

The cost is $100 per golfer. Opportunities to host a hole ($100) or sponsor the tournament ($1000) are also available.

The next Douglas County Sheriff's Senior Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy will be held September 11-15, 2017.

Registration is now being accepted for those interested in attending the academy and learning about law enforcement. Students must be at least 50 years of age and residents of Douglas County.

South Lake Tahoe, CA – Recovering from a major joint surgery doesn’t usually inspire the idea of snowshoeing by moonlight, but that’s exactly what Carol Bennis, age 75, was asked to do during her recovery last February.

Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

Twelve four-season resorts with 20,000 skiable acres are all now part of a new company that was formed to acquire Intrawest Resort Holdings, Inc. and Mammoth Resorts.
