County Supervisors vote in changes for South Lake Tahoe ambulance service

South Shore ambulance service has been a hot topic both locally, and across the county with growing concern over the costs and resulting manpower shortage of providing interfacility transfers (IFTs) to facilities outside of El Dorado County.

To understand the recent actions of the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS), a look at the past year is warranted.

New chief at the helm of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department

Retired Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit can now rest assured that his former fire department is in good hands with the promotion of Scott Baker to Fire Chief. Baker took over the controls in July 1.

"We will be raising the level of standards to legitimize the industry," said Mayor Wendy David.

Taxi cabs in South Lake Tahoe now on more level playing field with rideshares

For months the operators of taxicabs in South Lake Tahoe have said the regulations they have to abide by when operating in the City limits were unfair since app-based rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft didn't have to follow the same controls.

After Tuesday's City Council meeting, the cabs and rideshares will now be on a more level playing field with less regulation.

The "cabbies" at the meeting all left happy with the 5-0 vote of the Council to reduce the number of regulations they once had to abide by, and with a new ordinance created through group meetings with both sides.

Number of arrests over 4th of July weekend in South Lake Tahoe

For the 96 hours that made up the 4th of July weekend this year, South Lake Tahoe police arrested 27 people, nine of them on the holiday.

SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler said they could have made more arrests, but his officers look for a peaceful solution. If there is a sober adult in the situation, police will many times let them take care of the person in their party who'd been drinking. This leaves officers available and on the streets in case of emergencies, and not tied up with paperwork.

A letter to City Council regarding multi-family VHRs

Dear City Council,

Group formed to battle new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance change

You've spent your life savings on the dream, to buy a home in South Lake Tahoe. Better yet, you've found the perfect property where you can find a way to live in Tahoe and own a home that brings in some income.

There are current 56 different parcels in the City limits that are multi-family units that are also licensed vacation rentals and the City of South Lake Tahoe wants to prevent them from being rented, thus stopping the home owners from earning the needed income to keep their home.

South Lake Tahoe City Council wrap-up; Plastic bag ban partially rescinded

The agenda for the South Lake Tahoe City Council was a light one this week.

The plastic bag ban ordinance was amended to only affect grocery stores and not retail outlets. Former Mayor Hal Cole asked for the issue to be brought back before the council in October. "I thought we were only voting to bring the ordinance back for review, not to pass it," Cole said about his vote on October 15, 2013.
