The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.
Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, underage drinking and drugs.
First weekend of VHR ordinance in South Lake Tahoe nets eight violators
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/26/2017 - 3:25pmOver the first weekend of enforcement of the new South Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Ordinance, eight violations were issued at a price tag of $8,000.
Parking was the biggest offense with renters having more cars than allowed, something that caught many by surprise as they thought noise would bring in the most violations for vacation home rentals (VHR). Four citations were issued for parking, two for exceeding occupancy, one for parking and noise combination and one for being an unpermitted VHR.
The SLT City Council voted in the new ordinance to take effect December 22, 2017.

LTCC awarded $500k for culinary pre-apprenticeship program
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/20/2017 - 11:34pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is one of just a handful of educational providers in the state to win a $500,000 grant from the California Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI) to help build and launch culinary pre-apprenticeship programs in South Lake Tahoe. LTCC was recently notified of the award, which will be used to help better prepare South Lake Tahoe’s workforce and to improve local residents’ ability to secure in-demand jobs and progress to higher-wage careers in the Tahoe Basin.
Nevada doctor arrested on distribution of opioids and health care fraud charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 11:39amDr. Devendra I. Patel, aka Devendrakumar I. Patel, 58, of Elko, Nev., was arrested Tuesday on 39 charges of unlawful distribution of prescriptions opioids and Medicaid fraud.
Patel is charged with 36-counts of distribution of controlled substances such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and three-counts of health care fraud. He is a cardiologist at his medical practice, Northeastern Nevada Cardiology. The statutory maximum penalty for distribution of a controlled substance is 10 years in prison and the maximum penalty for health care fraud is 10 years in prison.
City wants citizens to be prepared for high winds and cold temperatures

The week ahead in South Lake Tahoe will be a clear one, but very cold as a strong high pressure system builds over the Sierra causing prolonged periods of strong morning inversions.
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a wind advisory for Lake Tahoe from 1:00 p.m. Monday to 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Winds will be from the East 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Over the ridges will be as high as 80 mph.

Partnership emphasizes nature is the best medicine
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/28/2017 - 6:55pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - To show nature is the best medicine, Barton Health and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) have partnered together to give the community Wellness Outings.
Patients will have access to the forest through a guided outing with a USFS ranger and physician or nurse.
In addition to Wellness Outings, the partnership will provide wellness and injury prevention training for USFS rangers and firefighters, as well as accessibility of public lands to promote outdoor recreation.
Christmas tree permits all sold out in Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/28/2017 - 6:19pmIt took less than two weeks for the U.S. Forest Service to sell out of Christmas tree cutting permits. Since November 13, the first day of sales, 2,250 permits were sold from the USFS offices in South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village and Tahoe City. No additional permits will be authorize for this season.
Permits may still be available in locations outside of the Tahoe Basin. Call ahead to see if they still have the $10 permits on hand:

Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from prescribed fire operations
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/02/2017 - 3:13pmPrescribed fire operations in both the Eldorado National Forest and Tahoe National Forest Truckee Ranger District are sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin Thursday.
If you have low tolerance for smoke, please take the following precautions to reduce your exposure.
· Stay indoors as much as possible especially seniors and children. Avoid physical exertion.
· Close windows, doors, and outside vents when it is smoky. Use a fan or air conditioner to re-circulate the air. Ventilate your home and work place during periods when it is least smoky.
Man accused of threatening Carson City judge dies in prison
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/26/2017 - 5:05pmThe man accused of firing shots into the home of Carson City Judge John Tatro, setting up an explosive device outside the home and sending a threatening Christmas card has died, Carson City law officials confirm.
John Aston, 74, died Thursday morning, 6:25 a.m. in the infirmary at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. News of his death has been confirmed by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Coroner responded. An autopsy will be scheduled per NRS 209.3815. Next of kin have been notified.

City of South Lake Tahoe takes first look at ban of Styrofoam
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/19/2017 - 10:51pmThrowaway polystyrene coffee cups, soup bowls, plates, trays, meat packing trays, egg cartons, to-go boxes and packing peanuts are already a thing of the past in cities across the country, and South Lake Tahoe might soon have their name on that list.
City Council members heard a presentation at their October 17 meeting, testing the waters to see if there is a desire to eliminate or limit the use of Polystyrene within the City limits.
Single use plastic bags in grocery stores were banned in South Lake Tahoe in 2013 and recently made a pledge to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2032.

Firefighters have been challenged with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph causing extreme rates of spread and volatile burning conditions.

In two weeks we will vote on the first reading of the ordinance and if a majority supports it, on November 7th would be the final vote to adopt the revised regulations and rules. The ordinance would then go into effect 30 days later.

The Venerable Geshe Lobsang Tsultrim, a Tibetan Buddhist monk of the Gelug order, will be in South Lake Tahoe as part of The Loft's speaker series on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.
Geshe-la trained in philosophy and sacred art at Gaden Shartse Monastic University in Southern India and for many years toured the world as sand mandala master for the Sacred Arts of Tibet tours. He currently lives in Auburn, Calif.
The evening's schedule includes an optional dinner, meet and greet, and teaching session.

New McDonald's opens in South Lake Tahoe at the Y
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/14/2017 - 6:37pmOn May 17, 2017, South Tahoe Now was at the demolition of the McDonald's at the "Y," and the builder said he'd have the project done and ready to open in 120 days.
Wednesday, September 13, the new 4,305 square foot building with its environmental improvements opened to the public at 11:30 a.m. That was 117 days since we saw old, 40-year-old building come down.
Inside, diners will see a sleek new design with automated ordering stations and plenty of seating.

Local Art After Dark at the Benko Art Gallery will feature live music, live art, dance performances, local food and drinks from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 at the door and $10 for Sample the Sierra ticket holders and locals (will need to show wristband or local ID at the door. Locals include Tahoe basin and extends to Placerville and Carson/Reno).

I thought the City Manager's introduction on why we were looking at a revised ordinance and the staff presentation on the revisions were excellent and on point. At first I was a little confused about some of the council questions of staff but reminded myself that the VHR sub-committee made up of Mayor Pro Tem David and myself have been living, sleeping and eating the VHR issue for over two years.

Vacation rentals again on South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda

This new way of vacationing has not come without issues so many towns are creating ordinances or, like in Anaheim and other cities, banning them.
Suspects still sought in South Shore stabbing
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/31/2017 - 1:31pmSuspects are still being sought for the violent robbery, battery and stabbing of a man outside Harrah's Tahoe.
On August 13 at 3:10 a.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called to the valet area of the Stateline casino where they found a man with a stab wound. The incident occurred on the sidewalk near valet.
Witnesses stated an altercation occurred between the victim and two males who fled the scene after the incident.
Approval granted for removal of dead and dying trees in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/24/2017 - 5:51pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board on Wednesday approved an emergency permit for Caltrans to remove hazardous dying trees along its highways and rights of way in the Tahoe Basin.
California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a tree mortality emergency in October 2015 because of widespread tree die-offs after several years of severe drought. There are now an estimated 102 million dead trees in California, with the greatest tree mortality in the Southern Sierra Nevada.
Special evening meeting for City Council's Cannabis Workshop
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/23/2017 - 10:34pmThe South Lake Tahoe City Council is holding a Cannabis Workshop on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:00 p.m. in their chambers at the Lake Tahoe Airport.
They decided to hold the meeting during the evening hours instead of their normal 9:00 a.m. meeting time in hopes more citizens would attend and speak.
No sales of cannabis are currently allowed in California outside of medical marijuana dispensaries. The state is finalizing their regulations and the City wants to be prepared as those are slated to start January 1, 2018.

However, bullying is a salient and, unfortunately, common occurrence. It can take place on school grounds, after school, and through electronics (cyberbullying).
Brush fire burning in canyon behind Fandango Casino in Carson City
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/22/2017 - 2:40pmUPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.
“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”
Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

Man stabbed at Stateline casino; suspects sought

One man was stabbed and two other men are being sought after an altercation led to a stabbing outside Harrah's Tahoe on Sunday, August 13 at about 3:10 a.m.
Deputies from Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) were called to the Stateline casino valet area on a report of a stabbing and robbery. When they arrived they found the unidentified man with a serious stab wound.

Wellness Outings: A prescription for “Nature as Medicine”
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/10/2017 - 5:46pmSouth Lake Tahoe, CA – Recovering from a major joint surgery doesn’t usually inspire the idea of snowshoeing by moonlight, but that’s exactly what Carol Bennis, age 75, was asked to do during her recovery last February.
Carol had never been on snowshoes before, or hiked at night, but when she heard her surgeon and other patients at a similar stage of recovery would be there, she decided to try it out.

Two die in Minden skydiving accident
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/03/2017 - 2:24pmAugust 4 update: The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The pair's parachute deployed but there was an unknown problem that caused it to not slow their descent.

Update 2:55 p.m.: At approximately 10:15 am on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017, deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were called to a report of two skydivers down near the Minden Airport. Upon arrival, deputies found two deceased skydivers on the ground outside the perimeter of the airport.

The event was first hosted in 1984 as a way to bring communities together and promote stronger ties between citizens and the law enforcement personnel who serve them. Communities are at their best when neighbors feel a common bond and a sense of community not only among themselves but also with their local public servants, and National Night Out is a fun and enjoyable way to foster those important ties.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) opens up their annual Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI) on Monday, July 31, a special guest will be there as part of the opening ceremony.
Selene Barceló, Consul for Community Affairs at the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento, will speak at several of the institute's activities starting at 7:45 a.m. with the opening session at the plaza outside the campus's Roberta Mason Library.
At 9:00 a.m. she moves to the Duke Theatre where she'll make a presentation in Spanish and then in English at 10:00 a.m.
Open House at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

Once a year the public has the opportunity to explore the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care facility. On Sunday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., they will open their doors to where the wild birds and animals are rehabilitated.
For 40 years the non-profit has been serving wildlife in the Sierra and normally the only people allowed past the front door are the volunteers.
Fire alarm prompts evacuation of South Lake Tahoe timeshare
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/25/2017 - 8:46pmGuests staying at Diamond Resort's Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort in South Lake Tahoe were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a smoke alarm sounded in the Ski Run Boulevard property.
At 4:40 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded. Upon arrival they found the guests already outside and they headed in.
Some workmen had been on the 5th floor of the timeshare hotel, soldering on pipes inside the wall. Surrounding insulation ignited and the alarm was sounded as the workmen pulled the smoking culprit out of the wall.
Preacher Fire near Gardnerville swells to 3,130 acres, evacuations in place
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/24/2017 - 5:47pm9:00 p.m. update: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has initiated evacuations for areas east of Pine Nut Road to include Fred's Street, Sandoval, Taildragger, Bluebird, and Bar-J Roads as well as in the Sierra Spirit Ranch area including, Blue Sage Road, Badger Lane, Robinson Road and Lena Lane. In addition, Washoe Tribal Police are evacuating the Bodie Flats area in the vicinity of Courtland Avenue.
The lightning-sparked Preacher Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains southeast of Gardnerville has swelled to 3,130 acres according to DCSO with winds moving north.
