On August 26, 2014, South Lake Tahoe resident Matthew Marhefka was in a serious dirt bike accident and suffered a broken neck which resulted in his being paralyzed from the neck down.

He recently had neck surgery and the results were successful. His spine is now stable but due to the severe spinal cord injury he remains paralyzed from the neck down. According to family friends, the doctors have hope that he could possibly regain feeling and or movement to his hands and arms.

Residents and Businesses Work to Restore Lake Tahoe’s Natural Beauty

Residents and businesses located in Nevada and California have joined efforts to remove graffiti and trash from Lake Tahoe which is known for its pristine water and incredible natural setting. On Sunday, October 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., organizers invite friends and supporters of Lake Tahoe to participate in this special multi-state effort. They will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Sand Harbor for a safety talk, graffiti and trash removal instructions and supplies.

BIG Day at the Kids' Fishing Derby at Lake Baron

"Big" describes the fish caught by the winners of the 13th Annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids' Fishing Derby last Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Park's Lake Baron. Records were broken, including biggest fish and number of trophy fish caught. The mark was set early, as Casey Holder landed a 4 lb 9 oz trout in the opening minutes of the Derby. At least 50 trout weighing in at over 2 pounds were pulled in by the participating children, many weighing over 3 pounds! It didn't take long for Chance Rice to bring in the day's ultimate winner, a 4 lb 10 oz beauty!

Fall Garden Party in South Lake Tahoe

Chili Cookoff and Fall Festival held Satuday

The 3rd Annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off is at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center Saturday, September 13 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

There will be live entertainment, a cake walk, raffles, vendors and a chili tastings as well as events for the whole family. Admission to the event is free. More information can be found on the website at www.goldenbearevents.com.

Local non-profits will benefit from the event. The South Tahoe Cancer League, Lion's Club, American Legion Post 795, Christmas Cheer and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society are among the recipients.

The 12th Annual Kids' Fishing Derby on September 21

Local mixologists complete in 5th Annual Signature Cocktail Contest

Crawfish and muscles take center stage at MontBleu Resort

2nd Annual Meyers Mountain Bike Festival this weekend

The festival kicks off with a “Triple Crown Ride” covering 30+ miles and a 5,200 elevation gain. Riders should arrive at the Divided Sky at 7:30 a.m. to register for the ride. A $25 donation will support the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), and Clif Bar will have water and fueling stations along the ride.

Race the Lake of the Sky Stand Up Paddle Event in South Lake Tahoe For All Ages

The 3rd Annual Race the Lake of the Sky hits the waters of South Lake Tahoe this weekend.

Started in 2012 by South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle, Race the Lake of the Sky is a premiere flat-water SUP race and was dubbed the top pick for the best stand up paddle event of the year in 2013 by pro SUP athlete Anthony Vela. The event offers a stunning location as the backdrop in drawing hundreds of participants, novice and elite alike. Various races include short course. They wrap it all up with a 14 mile race to Emerald Bay and Back on Sunday.

Nevada Highway Patrol to Take Part in "Tip a Cop" Day at Lake Tahoe's Hard Rock Cafe

The NHP and DPS will be assisting the wait staff as they serve patrons in order to earn "special tips."

Free Kids Fishing Day in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The annual Dale Sare Memorial Optimist Club Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Sawmill Pond in South Lake Tahoe. Fishing is free to all children up to age 14. In addition, the Optimist Club will be hosting a free raffle to give children and opportunity to win prizes.

Fishing tackle and bait will be provided for anyone who does not have their own.

Volunteers will be on hand to clean fish that are caught that day. The pond is at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road in El Dorado County.

South Tahoe Pop Warner Cheer & Football Sign Ups

Though it's still baseball season, plans have been forming for the 2014 fall season of Pop Warner Football & Cheer.

Sign ups start Tuesday, May 27. Players have three opportunities to sign up, tonight, June 17 and June 19.

The program if open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (must be 5 as of 08/01/14 to age 14 as of 08/01/14).

Over 500 South Lake Tahoe Students Complete We Can! Program

Congratulations to the five hundred and sixty-seven students from Lake Tahoe Unified School District who participated in Barton Health’s sixth annual We Can! program. We Can, which stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition, is a 7-week program designed for 4th and 5th graders that encourages healthy eating habits, activity, exercise, and overall wellness. We Can! is a national program that is implemented locally by Barton Health and the school district’s physical education teachers.

Incline Village Resident Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

The 2013-14 school year is off to a great start! We have had much excitement since August 19th with our first and hopefully, annual Round Hill Pines Beach Bash which was held on September 8th. Festivities included hot dogs and hamburgers, a raffle, and a silent auction. Families were able to get acquainted and re-acquainted and the kids were still enjoying the long summer sun. Thanks to our awesome Parent-Teacher Club, we are well on our way to funding many academic opportunities for enrichment and intervention as well as materials and resources for our teachers.

October Luxury Home Tour Receives Big Turnout and High Praise

Coldwell Banker Select Real Estate in conjunction with Stanford Mortgage and First American Title Company had a tremendous turnout for their recent Luxury Home Tour event in the Reno area. REALTORS® and other Real Estate Professionals were invited to go on a tour of four luxury Coldwell Banker listings and to gain insight into the world of luxury home sales. The tour was organized by Melanie Stewart, Director of Luxury Marketing and spearheaded by Dena Hospodka, Managing Broker for Coldwell Banker Select.

Halloween Spectacular

Lake of the Sky Outfitters Movie Night

With the return of fall comes Lake of the Sky Outfitters popular Movie Night! We are starting off with the film "The Alps: The Climb of your Life" which features stunning cinematography and an exciting story line about American climber John Harlin III's attempt to climb in his fathers footsteps the notorious North Face of the Eiger. His father perished on his attempt to climb the North Face making John's climb that much more suspenseful.

Admission is free as always and there will be light refreshments and a free raffle.
