Rain and snow may arrive to Lake Tahoe and Sierra by Easter weekend

A combination of rain and snow for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra is possible by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Low pressure in the eastern Pacific is expected to move slowly toward the California coast around Friday into the weekend. This will bring an increased supply of subtropical moisture with the possibility of rain over a larger portion of lower-elevation western Nevada, and a mix of rain and snow at the higher elevations of the Sierra and Lake Tahoe.

A weak weather system will move into the Sierra beginning Sunday with a wetter system expected to bring some much-needed snow accumulation for the Lake Tahoe region from Tuesday through Thursday, the National Weather Service reports.

Lake Tahoe’s clarity improved in 2012 for the second year in a row, and its waters were the clearest in 10 years, according to University of California, Davis, scientists who study the lake.

Last year’s average annual clarity level was 75.3 feet, or a 6.4-foot improvement from 2011, according to data released today by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

We want to note a big fish caught by Eric St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., pictured above. The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

Lake Tahoe under Winter Storm Warning as storm blows into region

As rain turns to snow in the Sierra a Winter Storm Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Snow levels are rapidly dropping as cold air associated with this latest storm drops into the basin.
Snow is expected below 7,000 feet this morning with periods of heavy snow in the afternoon. Snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches are expected above 7,000 feet with 4 to 8 inches at lake level. At least two feet is expected above 8,000 feet.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory from 10 Thursday night through 4 p.m. Friday for areas above 7,000 feet. For the first wave of a series of three storms, anywhere between 8 to 16 inches of snow is expected around 7,000 feet and above and between 2 to 3 feet above 8,000 feet.

Prescribed fires planned Wednesday for east and west shores of Lake Tahoe

Along with prescribed burns today at South Shore, the U.S. Forest Service has similar plans Wednesday near Secret Harbor on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe and in the Ward Canyon area south of Ward Creek on the west shore.
Crews expect to burn as many acres as possible before the predicted rain storm moves into the Lake Tahoe Basin. Operations in Ward Canyon are expected to last one day, weather permitting.

City: Thanks Raley’s for Support of the Turkey Trot Fun Run

The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to remind the community that the 2012 Turkey Trot Fun Run is being held this Saturday, November 17th at the Parks and Recreation facility at 11am. The Fun Run is a free event for children ages 3-13 and every participant will win a prize. We would also like to thank the many local volunteers, including Raley’s and Optimist Club for their support of this annual local event.

Raley’s has generously donated all of the turkeys and pies as the awarded prizes to Turkey Trot Fun Run winners.

Turkey Trot 2012 at the Community Recreation Center

Get into the holidays with fitness in mind with Turkey Trot 2012 at the South Lake Tahoe Community Recreation Center. The event is hosted by the Tahoe Mountain Milers, South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club and the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Department. Sign up at 10am.
Races held snow, rain or shine! Race distances range from 25 yards for the kids to 2.8 miles for the adults. Youth races begin at 11am and adult race begins at noon. Winners in each division win a turkey. Second and third places receive pumpkin pies.

A fire weather watch is in effect from Saturday afternoon through Saturday night for the Lake Tahoe Basin, northeast California and Northwest Nevada, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
The watch is associated with the possibility of dry thunderstorms and a strong outflow of wind. High pressure will move over the region this weekend with a moist southerly flow that will develop across the Sierra and Western Nevada, according to the weather service.
