Likely South Lake Tahoe voters to see two VHR ballot measures in November

Two South Lake Tahoe community groups have submitted petitions to get their vacation home rental (VHR) initiatives on the November, 2018 ballot. The first group, Tahoe Neighborhoods Group, submitted 1,651 signatures to the City Clerk on April 30, and the second group, Sustainable Community Alliance, turned in 1,827 signatures on May 21, less than 30 days after they started collecting them.

Be an artist at the South Lake Tahoe Library

Tahoe Legends Run to raise funds for South Lake Tahoe track

The 5K Tahoe Legends Run, a fun run (or walk) that raises money annually for the South Tahoe Middle School track, will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Competitors will start at Lake Tahoe Community College and finish on the track at the school's South Tahoe Community Sports Complex, former home of the 1968 Olympic Trials Track.

Participants will weave through rolling hills, forests and meadows on single track trails and bike paths.

Volunteers needed for Grover Hot Springs Earth Day Work Day

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. - The Alpine Watershed Group will be hosting an Earth Day Work Day on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Grover Hot Springs State Park. This event allows for the completion of important restoration work to a beautiful, and important alpine meadow.

Volunteers are needed to help with invasive weed removal, fence rebuilding and extension, and state park maintenance. All are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary. Participants will gather at Grover Hot Springs at 8:30 a.m. for registration and introductions.

Empowerment Retreat for eighth grade girls

The Live Violence Free Girls Empowerment Retreat in South Lake Tahoe on March 28 is open to all eighth grade girls.

This retreat encourages eighth grade girls to explore self-worth, care, leadership and sisterhood, to move forward into freshman year feeling connected with their peers, and strong in their own capabilities. The day is structured with lessons, activities, games, food, and most of all: fun!!

The retreat is FREE for participants.

Cell phone use and speeding top list of citations issued by Washoe Sheriff's deputies

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Deputies participating in a Nevada Department of Public Safety Joining Forces Distracted Driving prevention campaign this month cited more than 80 drivers for speeding and 43 drivers for cell phone use.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt, and speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is holding "Jammin 4 Tash" on Saturday, January 20 to honor the late Natasha "Tash" Sagucka who died from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 4, 2017 at the age of 24.

"From the time she was two years old till her last days on this earth she found peace, love and light on the mountains," was stated on Sagucka's obituary. "She thrived from the energy of slashing through the trees and sliding on the rails just perfectly."

How many steps can you take in 97 days? Almost a million?

Join El Dorado County's team in the 1 Billion Steps Challenge which tracks participant's steps through apps from January 1 to April 8, 2018.

The challenge is through the American Public Health's Associations (APHA) who are encouraging Americans to get out and walk, roll and get moving. Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel won top honors at the California Hotel & Lodging Association “Stars of the Industry” awards for their "My Tahoe" guest relations program.

The annual awards recognize lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.

Carson City AAA office to handle DMV services for both CA and NV

Those dreading the day they have to wait in lines at the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) now have another option to get paperwork processed.

Starting December 4, 2017, the American Automobile Association (AAA) office in Carson City will take over-the-counter transactions for both the Nevada and California DMV.

Nevada transactions are available to both members of AAA and non-members. The California services in Carson City will be limited to members-only with the exception of Dealer services.

Bids being accepted for Lakeview Commons food concession

Those interested in operating the food and beverage concession services at Lakeview Commons at El Dorado Beach Recreation Area in South Lake Tahoe may now submit a proposal.

This process was initiated in 2012 when Lakeview Commons first opened. The City of South Lake Tahoe said they would seek bids by concessionaires for the location every few years.

Revised medical marijuana rules being worked out, committee sets next meeting

The last meeting of El Dorado County's Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee was a packed house, with a majority of those in attendance made up of cannabis growers in the area, and more of the same is expected at their next meeting.

One of the organizers, County Supervisor Sue Novasel of the South Shore, said all participants were respectful of each other's opinions. "It was a good meeting," said Novasel. She said many were concerned about a proposed registration procedure.

National Brotherhood of Skiers to hold next summit at Squaw Valley

The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows to host its next NBS Black Summit. The Summit serves as both the organization’s annual gathering of members and largest fundraiser. More than 800 NBS members and 300 guests from throughout the US and beyond are expected to attend the annual event. The week-long event will run March 3-10, 2018.

Kokanee Trail Runs in South Lake Tahoe this October

Tahoe Mountain Milers are holding their annual Kokanee Trail Runs during the Fall Fish Fest on October 8. Participants can choose to participate in the 5K, 10K 1/2 Marathon or the Tadpole Trot at the Sno-Park on Highway 89 north of Camp Richarson.

South Tahoe High football team holds inaugural golf tournament

South Tahoe Football is holding their first fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, September 30 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This even coincides with South Tahoe High's Homecoming weekend events.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

Following the tournament will be a luncheon and awards presentation.

The cost is $100 per golfer. Opportunities to host a hole ($100) or sponsor the tournament ($1000) are also available.
