South Shore fuels and healthy forest project takes next step

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for a project that would implement extensive forest thinning along Lake Tahoe's South Shore to reduce the risk of high-intensity wildfire and improve forest health. Under the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA), the release of the FEIS triggers the 30-day objection period for the project. Only those who have previously submitted written comments on this project may file an objection.

Motorcycle and large truck collide near Kirkwood

A motorcycle apparently collided with a large truck this afternoon in the Carson Spur area near Kirkwood Mountain Resort and State Route 88.
According to police scanner traffic, the motorcyclist was pinned underneath the truck, possibly a big rig. A CALSTAR air ambulance was dispatched to the accident scene. A ground ambulance was, at last report at around 2:40 p.m, to transport the downed cyclist to a zone cleared for CALSTAR to land.

Lake Tahoe, Reno to host Chinese Cosmos pageant

Nevada will host 18 contestants from all over the world who are competing in the Miss Chinese Cosmos Semi-Finals, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, announced today in a press release.

The event will take place in Reno and Lake Tahoe from Sept. 23-30, 2011. The contest moves around the world each year, last year taking place in Sydney, Australia. This is the first time the pageant has been held in the United States.

Taco eating contest at MontBleu nets Kings Beach man $1,000 (PHOTO GALLERY)

The first of its kind Lake Tahoe Taco Eat-Off Challenge at MontBleu Resort, Casino and Spa was won Saturday by Erik Irwin from Kings Beach.  He ate 14 tacos in 10 minutes to take home $1,000 in cash.  That's nearly three pounds of food! The second of California’s two free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3. The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You'll be able to fish wherever you like in California. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.
So, be sure to obey those rules and regulations. Don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be very expensive.
