CHP: Crackdown On Cell Phone Texting and Talking While Driving

April 1st starts the month long zero tolerance campaign “It’s Not Worth It!” to highlight the fact that drivers who text and use cell phones while driving have the same driving behavior as those who are legally drunk. South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol officers will join others from around the state in an effort to curb these behaviors in order to reduce preventable accidents with injuries.

Carrie Underwood Added to Harvey's Outdoor Concert Series Lineup

The Harvey's Outdoor Concert Series in South Lake Tahoe is adding more concerts to their summer 2014 lineup.

Carrie Underwood was added to the schedule with a concert during the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament. Tickets for the July 18 show will go on sale March 20 at 10 a.m.

Underwood joins Sara McLachlan (June 24), Zac Brown Band (July 20), Journey and Steve Miller Band (July 30), Boston and The Doobie Brothers (August 3) and Bruno Mars (August 14).

Improvisation Group Brings the Laughs to LTCC

Suffering from gyrate atrophy since birth, Hestle knew that her eyesight was going away. People with the disease are usually totally blind between the ages of 40-60. One year ago she had cataracts surgery, giving her eyesight for awhile longer but without peripheral vision.

Snowfall in Lake Tahoe Does Little to Relieve Drought Conditions

Thursday's measurement of the Sierra snowpack at Phillips, just west of South Lake Tahoe, shows dismal water content, even with the recent snowfall. While better than the results earlier this month, there is still far too little water in the still scant snowpack according to the Department of Water Resources.

Lake Tahoe Tourism Officials Denounce Fireworks Lawsuit

With Tahoe South’s two annual fireworks celebrations meeting all state and federal standards throughout their 30-year history, area tourism officials strongly denounced a lawsuit that could threaten the annual July Fourth and Labor Day events as totally unnecessary.

In November, Joseph and Joan Truxler, of Zephyr Cove, Nev., filed a federal lawsuit against the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Pyro Spectaculars North alleging the twice-annual fireworks shows violated the Clean Water Act.

South Lake Tahoe was voted the Best Ski Destination in a highly contested USA Today reader ski poll conducted over the past four weeks.

Citing the beautiful views and fantastic skiing, voters were able to choose their favorite ski destination daily. Sun Valley, Idaho came in second with North Lake Tahoe in third, which shows everyone how popular Lake Tahoe skiing is as a whole.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Winter Storm Hits Lake Tahoe - Over a Foot of New Snow

Snow has blanketed the west with several inches of snow at the lower elevations at Placerville and Auburn up to over a foot in the Sierra Nevada. South Lake Tahoe reports this morning are coming in at 12" to 15" near lake level and the snow is still coming down.

Great Shakeout Earthquake Drills on Thursday

Students and staff at South Lake Tahoe schools will join millions around the world on Thursday to practice "Drop, Cover and Hold On" during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. The drills will be held at 10:17 on 10-17.

Over 18 million people and groups around the globe have registered on line as a participant in their own 10:17 on 10-17 drill. The recent earthquake in the Philippines shows that it is important to know what do in case of this type of emergency.

Council Votes to Ban Single Use Plastic Bags in South Lake Tahoe

With a vote of 3 to 2 in favor, the City Council today voted to ban single use carry out plastic bags in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. This issue was passionately debated by council members and the 8 citizens that offered their comment during today's City Council meeting. The city council is expected to finalize the ordinance later this month. The ban will take effect in grocery stores and farmers markets three months after adoption and will apply to all retail establishments after one year. Pharmacies,restaurants, and non-profits are exempted.

Bijou Community Park is Revamped During 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day

Employees of Heavenly and Kirkwood Mountain resorts and their friends and family members teamed together for the 4th Annual Vail Resorts Echo Day on Sunday, September 21st. The 312 participants volunteered to revamp Bijou Community Park, putting in a combined effort of 936 volunteer hours Saturday. Volunteers laid sod to build a family picnic area, painted signs and picnic tables, planted shrubs, cleared bushes, redistributed wood chips, resurfaced the skate park, raked the volleyball courts, picked up trash, and cleaned up the bicycle path along Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Lake Tahoe IRONMAN Athletes Vie for $75,000 in Prizes

Nearly 2,500 athletes are headed to the North Lake Tahoe area this week for IRONMAN, a full triathlon which will have them running 26.2 miles, biking 112 miles and swimming for 2.4 miles. The sold out event will have the events spread from Lake Tahoe to Squaw Valley and Truckee.

There are 13 age divisions from age 18 to 80 as well as professional and physically challenged divisions. Fifty winners from the event will qualify for the Championship IRONMAN in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in October, 2014.

Air Quality listed as "good" as smoke remains in Lake Tahoe basin

Update 9/1/13 9:00 am: South Lake Tahoe has grey skies this morning but they are due to a combination of cloud cover and a little smoke. Air Quality is listed as "good." The Rim Fire is 40% contained and has burned 222,777 acres. There were some spot fires that broke out over night due to winds. The heavy fuels are experiencing complete combustion. The containment date announced on the fire website yesterday is incorrect as is still officially September 20.

Celio Ranch Transports Visitors to a Bygone Era

It doesn’t take long to immerse yourself into the history of the Celio Ranch as you walk through the fields and old farm buildings. Spread over 100 acres at the base of Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe, the Celio Ranch shows what it was like in years gone by.

If you can tune out the sound of an occasional car engine or airplane you can imagine what these early settlers found as they farmed and created a large family business 150 years ago.

UNR team shows trends at Lake Tahoe ahead of summit

Scientists continue to remove invading warm-water fish from Lake Tahoe, while new research indicates some of the tiniest bugs that live on Tahoe’s bottom are disappearing at an alarming rate.

Those were among the research efforts conducted by experts at University of Nevada, Reno that were demonstrated at the lake Monday and two weeks before the Lake Tahoe Summit, an annual event celebrating decades of work to protect the landmark alpine lake.

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Neo-noir, avant-garde duo La Fin Absolute du Monde have released their third E.P. titled 'Descend,' featuring their first collaborations with outside producers, and are touring California and the Northwest this Summer, beginning in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, July 19 at Whiskey Dicks.

The duo wrapped up their first U.K. tour in support of 'Descend' in April where they traversed the U.K. on buses and public transportation, and are now beginning the Summer leg of their 2013 U.S. tour.
