CARSON CITY – A broader measure of Nevada’s unemployment picture, including those who have given up looking for work, showed some improvement through the end of 2011, a federal report released this week shows.
The rate in Nevada dropped to 22.7 percent in the 12 months through Dec. 31, down from 23.3 percent in the 12 months through Sept. 30, 2011.

Sierra snowpack well below normal even after January boost

The snowfall in January gave the Sierra snowpack a boost, but it is still well below average, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The graph above shows the Snow Water Equivalent from the current water year through Feb. 1, the average water year (1971-2000), and the 2010-2011 water year.
The Snow Water Equivalent for this water year through Feb. 1 is around 5 inches, compared to more than 20 inches this time last year, according to the weather service.

Weather Service: Snowpack increases with storms but dry weather may return

Here's the latest from the National Weather Service in Reno on the storms: This graph shows the change in snowpack percentage from the SNOTEL sites in the four main Sierra basins. Before the series of storms in the past week, all of the basins were below 10 percent of the season-to-date normals. As of early this morning, the snowpack has increased to around 25-30 percent of normal, which includes partial totals from the Sunday night-Monday storm.

Windy conditions Sunday ahead of midweek weather changes

A major pattern change next week should finally bring snow to Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
In the photo illustration above, the first three images show the jet stream and large scale (synoptic) pattern changes forecast to take place over the Eastern Pacific Ocean next week. The persistent high pressure ridge that had kept most of the West Coast abnormally dry this winter is forecast to amplify and retrograde allowing the Sub-Tropical Jetstream to bring strong winter storms back to the Sierra. The fourth image shows a significant amount of moisture that should prompt the storms at the end of next week.

Revenues Increase But Major Nevada Casinos Lost $4 Billion In FY2011

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s major casinos saw total revenues increase to $22 billion last fiscal year, but the 256 properties reported a net loss of just under $4 billion, the Gaming Control Board reported today.
It was the third year of losses in a row. The only other loss since records have been kept came in 2002.
The report, called the Nevada Gaming Abstract, analyzes those casino properties grossing $1 million or more in gaming revenue for the year ending June 30, 2011.

Nevada casinos see their profits, revenue rise in 2011

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released its Nevada Gaming Abstract for 2011 today, which shows profits for Nevada casinos rose 16.4 percent. But for South Shore casinos, profits dropped 72 percent.

Walnut Creek man Killed on Highway 50 near Stateline on New Years Day Identified

The 21-year-old Walnut Creek, Calif. man who was struck and killed by a California Highway Patrol vehicle and a shuttle bus early Sunday morning on Highway 50 near Stateline at Lake Tahoe has been identified as Alex M. Moore, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The accident happened between Lake Village and Elks Point Road and was reported around 12:44 a.m. Sunday morning. Here is the latest news release from NHP Trooper Chuck Allen:

NHP releases details on CHP Pedestrian Accident That Killed Walnut Creek man on Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe

The Nevada Highway Patrol has released the following information regarding the Highway 50 accident near Stateline at Lake Tahoe early Sunday morning that claimed the life of a 21-year-old Walnut Creek, Calif., man after being struck by a California Highway Patrol vehicle. The accident happened between Lake Village and Elks Point Road and was reported at 12:44 a.m. Sunday morning, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family, died at the scene of the accident.

Two die in Incline Village vehicle pedestrian accident; Grass Valley man arrested

Two pedestrians were killed Friday night when they were struck by a pickup, shortly before 8 p.m. in Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. The driver of the pickup, Christopher Torii Smith, 25, of Grass Valley, was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence causing death. Names of the deceased have not been released.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District has released a series of educational posters which identify some of the biggest threats to Lake Tahoe Basin, as well as what visitors, residents and even kids can do to help. Titled “Tahoe’s Most un-Wanted,” the first three posters feature aquatic invasive species, fine sediments from runoff and invasive weeds, and are free to pick up or request for local schools, businesses and other organizations who would like to display them publicly.

UPDATED 5PM: On Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, the federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).  The duration of the test will last up to 30 seconds.
