Local man facing several charges after hit and run in South Lake Tahoe

A South Lake Tahoe man is in the El Dorado County Jail, facing several charges after an alleged hit and run accident at the corner of Sierra Blvd. and Lake Tahoe Blvd. on Saturday.

An unidentified man was crossing the street in the crosswalk at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sierra Blvd. when he was struck by 66-year-old Gary J. Stanton.

SLT Police non-emergency line not working

The primary published non-emergency business phone number for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (530-542-6100) is currently inoperable. SLTPD is working with their local phone service and outside vendors to correct what appears to be a hardware malfunction at the police department.

Currently, when this number is dialed, the caller will likely hear an indication of a phone ringing on the other end, but this signal is not connecting to any telephone in the police department.

Six-hour stand off ends at Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe

An almost six-hour long standoff in the parking lot of the South Lake Tahoe Motel 6 parking lot has ended, with no suspect in custody, though a warrant has been issued for 31-year-old Sean Wanamaker.

South Lake Tahoe Police officers were called to the area Saturday afternoon after a person said a man got into an argument with someone in the parking lot, and that he brandished a handgun, then went into a trailer parked at the motel.

New security fence going up at SLT Police Department

To improve security at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, a new security fence is being installed.

In the plans since 2014, the black metal fence with three rows of razor wire at the top should be completed by the beginning of July.

"This is a need we've had for a long time," SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams told South Tahoe Now. "We received support from the City Council and City Manager, and the fence has been a long held desire for this department."

Fire destroys condos in Tahoe Keys

5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe City Council sets parade policy; Votes for City to host future 4th of July parades

It was a very short South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda Tuesday, but one that brought out passionate comments on the dais, and what one witness called "bickering."

The lone new business item was for the creation of a City policy where local parades are concerned, an item requested to be placed on the agenda by Councilmember JoAnn Conner.

Man killed after bringing 100 pounds of pot to South Lake Tahoe

Dennis Wright, Jr of Amador County has been identified as the man who died after being shot Saturday night at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.

Heavy snow for the Sierras today

SLT Police Chief on Officer Hounsell, auto theft, violent crime and winter driving

Tragedy at the Police Department. The department is deeply appreciative of the support given to the family of Mark Hounsell who was killed, along with his wife Jeanne and her friend Laura Fisher, in a motor vehicle accident. They are survived by 4 children who have been the recipients of beautiful and heartfelt support from the entire community. The fund for the Children is now approaching the goal of $130,000. SLT Police Officer Officer Mark Hounsell and wife laid to rest

Hundreds of mourners attended the memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne on Saturday at the LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.

An large crowd of family, friends and law enforcement paid their respects both along the route from the funeral home in Carson City to the church and at the church.

Fundraising campaign for family of SLT Police Officer Mark Hounsell

While the community is still in shock over the death of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell, his wife Jeanne and a family friend, a fundraising campaign has started to help their children as they move forward in life without a parent.

All four of Mark's children were in the 2004 Chevy Suburban on October 17, 2015 with Mark and Jeanne when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed, killing all three adults inside.

Facts about Saturday's South Lake Tahoe 50th Anniversary Parade

More than 100 vehicles and floats will be in Saturday's parade that will be celebrating the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th anniversary. Along with the moving entries there will also be 500 people walking along the route.

Route for City's 50th Parade changed so it leads to "Party in the Park"

The route of the City of South Lake Tahoe's 50th Anniversary Parade on Saturday, September 19 has changed direction so it will lead to Bijou Park for the grand opening of the Bijou Bike Park.

So far there are 85 entries in the parade along with over 300 walkers joining in the festivities. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the 'Y' and will proceed East on Highway 50, turn right onto Al Tahoe Blvd. and end at Bijou Community Park where the city will officially open and dedicate the Bijou Bike Park with a “Party at the Park.”

SLT Police Chief: Thieves be warned, GPS tracking coming soon

Community Outreach: During the month of August, we concluded our “Coffee with a Cop” program. Members of the public expressed support for the program but several asked for us to do the same thing at the Starbucks located at the “Y” to help give locals who frequent this location a chance to participate. This said, our plan is to do another session for a month during the winter at the “Y.” When we have specific dates and times, we will forward this information.

Coffee With a Cop: Meet with Chief Brian Uhler

The community has had an opportunity all summer to meet with the South Lake Tahoe Police Chief, Lieutenants and Sergeants this summer during their "Coffee With a Cop" series which is held ever Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Starbucks near Stateline.

These meetings give locals and visitors the chance to meet the officers and help shape our policing efforts in South Lake Tahoe. People are encouraged to stop by and share what’s going on in your neighborhood, what you are concerned about, and of course they’re happy to hear good news as well.

Officer identified in South Lake Tahoe shooting

The name of the South Lake Tahoe Police Officer involved in the June 15 shooting of 22-year-old Kris Jackson has been released.

Officer Joshua Klinge was the officer who responded to a 2:40 a.m. call about a woman screaming and crying at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on Lake Tahoe Blvd. The officer shot Jackson in the torso after feeling threatened according to earlier reports. Jackson died shortly afterwards at Barton Memorial Hospital.

Police officers honored during South Lake Tahoe ceremony

Rain may have moved the ceremony indoors, but spirits weren't dampened as the South Lake Tahoe Police Department honored some of their own on Thursday in honor of National Peace Officer's Memorial Day.

"We are normal people who are asked to do extraordinary tasks," SLT Police Chief Brian Uhler told the audience of the officer's families, friends, City Council, city staff, community members and other area law enforcement including the El Dorado County Sheriff, CHP and the FBI.

Local businesses invited to SLT Police Department's ABC training

All local business owners with an ABC license are invited to bring their employees to a free seminar presented by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) on Thursday, May 28 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Hosted by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the LEAD (Licenses Education on Alcohol and Drugs) seminar will provide information on what is acceptable I.D., the best way to check I.D., how to refuse service, signs and prevention of illicit drug activity, and more.

SLT Police asking public for help in recent identity theft case

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding more about the local activities of two men suspected of burglary, identity theft and other charges.

As reported in SouthTahoeNow, Chad Galvan and Marcus Gamez were arrested on February 25 on multiple charges stemming from their obtaining art at a local gallery with stolen identities.

Car accidents and spinouts come with snow in South Lake Tahoe

4:11 pm 3/1/15 Update from Jeff Munson, CarsonNow.org:

Six people were injured in a weather related head-on crash Saturday morning on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said. One woman remains in serious condition.

The accident was reported at 8:48 a.m. and involved a Toyota Camry, occupied by five people, three males and two females, and a Volvo, driven by a Carson City resident.

According to NHP Trooper Daniel Lopez, the Camry was going eastbound on Highway 50 and crossed over into the westbound lane, striking the Volvo head-on, said Lopez.

South Lake Tahoe non-profits want the City's old parking meters

The donation of some of the City of South Lake Tahoe's parking meters will be decided at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Two area non-profits, the SLT Police Canine Association and the Bijou Bike Park Association, would like to have some of them in order to solicit voluntary donations.

The canine group wants two of them, one to place in front of the Regan Beach Dog Water Park and the Bijou Dog Park. The bikers will place theirs at the new Bijou ike Park BMX track. Each group will be responsible for their maintenance and operation.

South Lake Tahoe home a complete loss after fire

4:40 p.m. update: A South Lake Tahoe home is a complete loss after a Thursday night fire which displace six residents and hospitalized two.

A South Lake Tahoe firefighter suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported to Barton where they were treated and released. The resident, a male, was at first sent to Barton but later transferred Code 3 to the U.C. Davis Burn Center with burns to his head and hands.

Are you prepared for a rise in burglaries?

Since the beginning of December, 2014 there have been 19 thefts, six burglaries and two robberies reported in the South Lake Tahoe city limits. While many of these are petty thefts, others have resulted in the theft of valuable jewelry, electronics and other belongings from residences while the owners weren't home.

Have you protected your home to the best of your ability? Many of us may think that "it can't happen to me," but when a home was burglarized around the corner from me, I changed that mode of thinking and started looking into ways to better protect mine.

South Lake Tahoe resident victim of international phone scam

An elderly South Lake Tahoe resident is the victim of a phone scam where he sent a undisclosed amount of money to unknown people. The phone number initiating the scam was from the area code 876, which is Jamaica.

The resident called SLT Police Department to alert them that he received phone calls from people he didn't know who were trying to obtain money from him. The victim was told by the caller that he was stuck in customs and needed help getting out. The suspect convinced the elderly victim to send him a large amount of money.

Many South Lake Tahoe residents find themselves dreading weekends, especially during ski season and the summer. Why you may ask? Because of the throngs of people headed for the vacation rental homes in their neighborhoods.

Families in South Lake Tahoe receiving turkeys from Food Bank

The EL Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Friday to give away turkeys to families selected by local agencies.

In partnership with Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Rotarians, SLT Fire Department, Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Club and the SLT Police Department, the Food Bank will give away 150 turkeys.

Families were signed up to receive the turkeys by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth and the Family Resource Center of South Lake Tahoe. They will get the gift on Friday, November 21 at the American Legion.

South Lake Tahoe Police looking for suspects in five burglaries

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is investigating several burglaries in the "Y" area of the city that occurred over the last two days.

On Wednesday, October 22 at 11:15 p.m., SLT Police responded to an alarm at the K-Mart Garden Center where they found the front glass door smashed in. Two suspects attempted to steal the cash registers but stole cash instead. They fled on foot and witnesses described the suspects as males wearing grey hooded sweatshirts.

The list of people against California's Proposition 47 grew today with the addition of El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson, Sheriff John D'Agostini and County Supervisors joining the fight against what has been touted "The Safe Neighborhood and Schools Act."

Home invasion robbery leads to the arrest of three suspected South Lake Tahoe gang members

Three South Lake Tahoe men are sitting in the El Dorado County Jail tonight on charges ranging from participating in a criminal street gang, conspiracy to commit a crime, burglary, robbery to manufacturing a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a home invasion robbery on October 11. Four men forced their way into a home in the Ski Run Blvd area, assaulted the victim and stole personal property. The victim reportedly knew the perpetrators.

Man missing since 2010 may have been seen in South Lake Tahoe

Jackson Miller was just 18 when he was reported missing by his family in 2010 and he has not been seen by his family since. There may be renewed hope by his family after a South Lake Tahoe man reported that he saw Miller in the area in mid-July.

Soon after he went missing, Miller's car was found in the parking lot of the Golden Gate Bridge with his wallet and cell phone still inside. Authorities determined that no one jumped from the bridge the night Miller's car was found and video surveillance cameras showed him leaving his car and walking out of the parking area.

Permanent Drug Disposal Bin Now Available at SLT Police Department

There is now a permanent drug-disposal bin located in the lobby of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department thanks to the collaboration between the Department and the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition. This bin is in a secure location for anyone in the community to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

Suspicious Package Found at South Y Center, South Tahoe High on Lock Down

Update at 12:55 pm: At noon Thursday, a K-Mart employee overheard two youth in the store talking about planting a device. Once they departed, the employee searched for something out of the ordinary. He walked past the vendor mailboxes in between K-Mart and Raley's and thought he heard a ticking sound and called the SLT Police.

Aaron Crawford, the South Tahoe High on site officer responded first. He has extensive experience with bombs, and based on what he could hear at the mailboxes he felt the situation warranted more investigation.

Where else can you go anywhere and have Santa dropped of in the Calstar helicopter at the Meyers Christmas Tree lighting or have the high school homecoming game ball delivered by Calstar?

I would gladly pay for that as I know others would also.
