One-percent sales tax increase for South Lake Tahoe to be added to the November ballot

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council approved unanimously at their meeting Tuesday to send what is being called the "South Lake Tahoe Fire Protection, Emergency Response, City Services Measure" to the ballot in November.

If voters approve the measure, a one-percent sales tax increase will be added in the City of South Lake Tahoe to all taxable purchases to meet funding shortfalls, according to the City.

South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting Tuesday: Tax increase and Grand Jury on agenda

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council will be on Tuesday, July 14 starting at 9:00 a.m. It will be a virtual meeting and log on/comment instructions are at the end of the story.

On the agenda:

Council will vote on a measure, that if approved by voters on November 3, will add a local one-cent sales tax for general city purposes. There has been outreach done with local residents and finding out what their highest priorities are, and this proposed tax increase would meet those requests:

Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe; Red Flag Warning for Western Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 28. Expect winds from the west 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-4 feet. Strongest winds and roughest conditions expected Saturday afternoon and evening, and then again on Sunday.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Greater Lake Tahoe Area and Tahoe, Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser, and Boca for Friday, June 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Winds will be from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves 2-4 feet on Lake Tahoe can be expected.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Temperatures closer to average by midweek

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The forecast low-pressure system with winds and a chance of snow brought widely scattered snow over the mountains around Lake Tahoe after a very windy Saturday. The showers will be diminishing this evening with a cold night Sunday. There will be widespread freezing temperatures with South Lake Tahoe seeing mid-20s. Things will start warming up closer to average by the middle of the week with lighter winds. Another low is possible Friday and Saturday with breezy winds, showers, and cooler temperatures.

Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe Saturday followed by chance of snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe remains in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6. Also under the warnings are Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser, and Boca.

The National Weather Service is forecasting southwest winds 20-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe could be 2-4 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

And if the wind wasn't enough, there is a chance of snow for Lake Tahoe Saturday night.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will return to around average by Monday then trend much warmer through Thursday and there will be chances for showers and
thunderstorms each afternoon and evening. A stronger storm system for early June reaches the Pacific Northwest coast next weekend for increased winds, much cooler
temperatures, and chances for showers in the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Winter Weather Advisory to start off the weekly South Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The calendar says the week before Memorial Day, but Mother Nature isn't too keen on letting summer get a start in Lake Tahoe.

A late-season storm will bring gusty winds, below-average temperatures, mountain snow, and periods of valley rain for the rest of today through Tuesday. Cloud cover hangs around into Wednesday keeping temperatures below seasonal averages with a few showers possible. Winds increase Thursday ahead of another system
which could bring a second round of cooler temperatures and scattered showers back to the region for Friday and Saturday.

Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for the Lake Tahoe area as well as the Reno, Carson City and Minden area for Sunday, May 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Winds are expected from the southwest at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

After the winds, the real fun starts with snow and rain in the four-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe.

Today - Partly sunny, with a high near 68. Light southwest wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

Change coming in the Lake Tahoe forecast: Wind, rain, upper elevation snow, and sun

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Summer-like weather around Lake Tahoe is gone for now. There is a Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday. Stronger winds will be north of US50 and east of US395. The winds will bring a cooling trend as a low-pressure system reaches the northwest U.S. coast. From Tuesday through Thursday, below-average temperatures are expected with breezy winds and chances for rain and high elevation snow showers mainly near the Sierra and north of Interstate 80.

Lake Tahoe snowpack measures 3% of average for May 1; Statewide stations at 37% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The fifth and final snow measurement of the year at Phillips Station took place Thursday, and results were very slim. The team from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured 1.5 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 0.5 inches which is three percent of average for May 1.

The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack, providing a more accurate forecast of spring runoff than snow depth alone.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Mostly sunny days with above normal temps to start the week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - High pressure will dominate and bring above normal temperatures through Wednesday. Rivers and streams will run faster as snow melts, but no flooding is expected. South Lake Tahoe forecast: Building high pressure; above average temps by weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Low pressure will bring chances for showers and seasonal temperatures the first part of the week. The best chance of showers will be in the eastern Sierra Monday afternoon and evening where some light snow accumulation is possible at the highest passes. High pressure will build for the end of the week with dry conditions and temperatures rising to well above normal levels over the weekend and early next week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The may be a wet end to the week in South Lake Tahoe with some cooler temperatures that will dip below normal Monday then warm again by mid-week. Low pressure, almost cutoff, will move into the region starting Thursday. This will increase chances for showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday into the weekend, mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Lake Tahoe starts the week with snow and ends with a sunny and warming weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A potent spring storm will continue to impact the Sierra tonight into Monday morning with periods of heavy snowfall and hazardous
travel. Cool and snowy/rainy conditions persist through Tuesday but chances will diminish as the low exits the region. High pressure then builds for the second half of the week with a drying and warming pattern expected heading into the weekend.

Winter Storm Warning until Monday for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until noon on Monday, April 6. At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.

Winter Storm Watch in place for Lake Tahoe this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What was originally forecast to be a sunny and mild weekend has changed into one that is calling for two different storms bringing heavy snow to the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Sierra snowpack at 66% of April 1 average; Statewide it is 53% of average

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The precipitation of March did not do enough to boost the snowpack in the Sierra to high figures, but it did give surveyors better figures than the 47 percent of average one month ago. The manual measurement of the snowpack at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe showed the snow depth was 43.5 inches with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 16.5 inches. This is 66 percent of the April 1 average at that location southwest of Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Lots of sun, near average daytime temperature

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you looked at the 7-day forecast on Sunday morning you may have been excited...high 50s at the end of the week followed by a 60 on Easter Sunday. That all went awry by afternoon as the weather models show a cold front dropping further south than originally planned and into northern California and Nevada with the jet stream near the Oregon border.

There will now be increased winds for Wednesday through Friday afternoons, particularly for thee Sierra ridges. The highs decreased and will now be closer to average and a chance of precipitation lingers.

Safe shopping for all age groups during coronavirus pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With "Stay at Home" orders from the state down to the local government, many are learning to adjust to the things they took for granted just a month ago.

One of those is a trip to the grocery store.

Even with all South Lake Tahoe grocery stores open, it doesn't mean it should be shopping as normal, a.k.a. "pre-coronavirus days."

Most households don't have refrigerator or freezer space, or even cupboard space to not have to make a run to the grocery store once in a while. But the fewer trips one makes, the better it is to remain safe and virus-free.

America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe rescheduled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another event casualty due to the coronavirus is the 29th annual America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. Originally set for Sunday, June 7, it has been rescheduled to combine with the 18th annual Tour de Tahoe, set for Sunday, September 13, 2020. This due to the uncertainty of current and changing CDC coronavirus COVID-19 restrictions and mandates by national, state and county health agencies.

Chain controls in place on Lake Tahoe area roads

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Weather Advisory in place until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Expect snow to fall in Lake Tahoe for another day as the latest in a series of small storms passes through.

For Wednesday: Snow likely before 11:00 a.m., then snow showers after 11:00 a.m. Some thunder is also possible. High near 35. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.

The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Sierra-at-Tahoe to close "indefinitely" - still chance of Spring reopening

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced they will be continuing to suspend their operations for the 2019/20 season indefinitely due to the COVID-19 health issue.

"The health and safety of our guests and employees is our primary concern. During this time of uncertainty, we will do our part to help stop the spread of this virus," the resort spokesperson Sarah Sherman said in a statement.

Sunny skies over Lake Tahoe Tuesday, many road controls remain

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is still a chance of snow all week in Lake Tahoe, but the sun is now out, allowing people to catch up on shoveling out driveways, parking lots and roads.

LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is on a delayed start of 10:00 a.m. this morning to allow time for snow removal operations to catch up around town.

LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Winter arrives the first week of Spring in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Tuesday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations through Tuesday of 4 to 10 inches and 12 to 18 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.

Day-long traffic jam over Echo Summit as vehicles leave Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sunday has been one big traffic jam for travelers trying to head west over Echo Summit. And as it the normal case, when traffic backs up the mapping apps direct drivers to side residential roads, many of which were unplowed and hard to navigate.

As of 7:30 p.m., traffic is still very heavy in Meyers and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently working on two accidents, one west of Sierra-at-Tahoe Road and the other east of Strawberry.

Heavy snow to continue through Monday; Avalanche warnings, Road closure update

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The forecast snow is here, with 2-3 feet reported at the upper elevations. The snow is affecting lower elevations as well, with chain controls starting to the west at Apple Hill.

If on the roads, check conditions often and go slow as there is snow and ice on the roads and a lot of traffic. There is another 21" of snow forecast for Sunday at lake level.

Sierra-at-Tahoe to close for at least 72 hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A day after they canceled events that were deemed high-risk, Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced they are suspending operations on Sunday, March 15 for at least 72 hours.

In a statement, Sierra-at-Tahoe said they apologized for the short notice and for any inconvenience it may post to their customers.

Multiple accidents, heavy snow, reported on Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadways

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a busy day on the highways around Lake Tahoe today with several accidents and road closures.

As of 5:00 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement and rescue teams have responded to a reported head-on collision on Pioneer Trail, west of Golden Bear, a collision on Pioneer Trail and US 50 in Meyers, a collision on US 50 at Kyburz, a car off the roadway on SR89 near Emerald Bay and two collisions on US88 near Kirkwood. There are also numerous collisions on I80 and on the North Shore.

Winter Storm Warning now in place for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the storm this weekend to a Winter Storm Warning with an increase in their previous forecast for snow accumulations and added winds. It begins Friday at 11:00 p.m. and goes until Monday at 11:00 a.m.

They are calling for heavy snow with total accumulations of 1-2 feet under 7,000 feet and 2-4 feet above. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph with ridge winds gusting to 100 mph in the Greater Lake Tahoe area.

The winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow.

21,000 more El Dorado County ballots counted: Measures M and B on way to defeat

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Elections department released another count of ballots from Tuesday's primary election on Friday afternoon.

Since election night, 21,446 more ballots have been counted in the county and those results were released at 4:40 p.m. Elections officials say there are just about 1,000 left to count. These late numbers come from ballots received in the mail and left in the area drop boxes near election day. It is unknown the location where the remaining 1,000 ballots are from.

Lake Tahoe and the Sierra should see snow and winds this weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After several days of warmth, a cold front will be ushering in a pattern shift for this weekend with drops in temperatures by almost 20 degrees. Expect increasing southwest winds Friday into Saturday with the strongest winds expected to be near and north of US-50 where gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely. Wind prone locations along the US-395 corridor could potentially see gusts to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
