Welcome to summer! The solstice officially arrived Friday at 8:54 a.m., welcoming in the longest day of the year. As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.

Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

The South Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club (SLTWYC) is holding its annual sailing skills clinic on Saturday, July 13, 2019, starting at 8:30 a.m. If you ever wanted to try sailing or are looking to improve your skills, this one-day class is for you. The clinic is open to men and women of all ages and experience levels.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you've been near the shore of South Lake Tahoe at Regan Beach at any time since fall you've most likely seen a partially sunken sailboat sitting just offshore. The boat's mast and wet sails have been sticking up through the water, an eyesore to many trying to take photos of the scenic view, a topic of conversation to others trying to figure out what happened.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What is sustainable tourism and what does it mean for Lake Tahoe?

The future of Tahoe tourism needs to be sustainable. This year’s Annual Tourism Forum will address this global concern on a local level on Thursday, May 30 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Responsible tourism is something all businesses in the Lake Tahoe basin are working towards and this year’s forum will explore that theme. The forum will include a main keynote speaker, two general sessions, and breakout sessions designed to get a closer look at four key topics.

South Tahoe High School students took the week to promote end-of-year events and commemorate Mental Health Awareness Month. Testing begins, sports end and school spirit is running wild.

STHS is taking time to observe Mental Health Awareness Month in May by sending out advice to students, including posting positive comments on social media, writing for fun, and learning a new skill. Here’s what some students plan to do:

Chabad at Lake Tahoe is holding an "Evening of Unity, Solidarity and Prayer" in response in the wake of the horrific Poway Chabad House shooting that left one dead and three injured.

“Our hearts are shattered by the cold-blooded attack on our brothers and sisters—Jews of all walks of life gathered at Chabad of Poway in celebration and prayer to the Almighty on Shabbat and the final day of Passover,” said Rabbi Mordey Richler. “We mourn the holy soul of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, and we pray for the healing of all the injured.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 60 people volunteered at the 5th annual South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Cleanup on Monday, April 23. They removed 750 pounds of trash which equals to 1,047 gallons of littler, as well as over 6,000 cigarette butts in just three hours.

As the warmer weather continues to melt snow, trash is being exposed. Not only is this an unsightly mess it can also be a hazard to wildlife and the lake's clarity.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of National Autism Awareness Month there is an event on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 to not only bring awareness of autism to the community with a panel discussion, but to celebrate with a silent auction, games, and food. "An Evening With Autism" will be held in the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose Room from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Leadership Lake Tahoe has been helping shape the South Shore community since 2003 and organizers are looking for the next class of participants for the ten-month program.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Hip Hop Fundamentals, an award-winning team of diverse professional Breakdancers dedicated to Hip Hop Education, are heading to South Lake Tahoe courtesy of the Tahoe Arts Project.

They are the world’s only Breakdance education company combining academic and social content with the world’s most dynamic dance form. They'll be in local schools starting March 25 and ending their stay with a free public performance on Friday, March 29 with a 7:00 p.m. show in the South Tahoe Middle School gym.

South Tahoe High School endured the beginning of Spring weather as the snow stopped falling and temperatures rose to 45F, giving students hope of warmer weather for the next following weeks. This week at STHS students prepared for upcoming school events, Julia Russell discussed Challenge Day, and Sofia Hedqvist signed to a college to continue her volleyball career in North Dakota.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Flu season is till here, and while cases across the country have resulted in few hospitalizations and deaths so far, people still need to take precautions.

“While it appears that influenza activity may have already peaked in El Dorado County, we are still receiving reports of flu cases. In fact, Marshall Medical Center reported nine confirmed cases of the flu this past week, a recent uptick in cases,” said El Dorado County Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams.

We are not unique in the fact that traffic apps have been showing shortcuts and causing headaches in neighborhoods, which have become freeways filled with people speeding through them to "save" up to a minute on their commute.

We do not have the luxury of support from our elected officials as other communities do, so we must come up with a solution ourselves.

Meyers is under siege every weekend with tourists trying to get home after a long weekend of enjoying what we sometimes take for granted and they are using traffic apps to try to get around the gridlock.

We All Wear Many Hats
My life has been a series of hats, labels, and roles. I have been a babysitter, library volunteer, dishwasher, waitress, security guard, bartender, teacher, flower delivery girl, nanny, counselor, and coach. I have played the roles of daughter, sister, friend, wife, colleague, employee, and boss. All of these are just labels that make what I am doing at the moment a bit easier to explain. Ultimately, there is just one word to describe me and that is: Self.

MEYERS, Calif. - Traffic through neighborhoods in the Meyers area has become unbearable to many residents as vehicles leaving South Lake Tahoe to take to side streets in an effort to circumvent Highway 50 traffic over Echo Summit.

In an effort to find solutions to a problem that keeps Meyers residents from their homes for hours at a time, a townhall-style meeting was held on Friday night.

Free tax return preparation for California and Nevada taxpayers of all ages with low-to-moderate incomes through the AARP Tax-Aide program. There is no appointment necessary. You must bring your social security card, photo ID, 2018 tax return documents, and a copy of your 2017 tax return. All tax returns are prepared and filed on site with no cost to the taxpayer. Former El Dorado County Judge, Fox and Friends First contributor and California Secretary of State candidate Steven Bailey will be speaking to the South Lake Tahoe Republican Women about the 2018 election during the Lincoln Reagan Dinner on February 12, 2019.

In addition, Assemblyman Kevin Kiley will speak to those attending about his campaign for California State Senate.

The social event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Tep's Villa Roma in South Lake Tahoe. A No-Host bar is open from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Dinner buffet is served at 6:30 p.m. and the speakers begin at 7:30 p.m.
