Ms. Lisa Maloff continues to impact the South Shore in a remarkable way. On May 18, 2017, Ms. Maloff gave a remarkable gift to the Tahoe Women’s Community Fund (TWCF). During the spring gala, which focused on the theme of impact, Ms. Maloff was able to experience the loving warmth in the room after her surprise gift of $100,000 was announced. Daniel Deemer is biking across America on his "Bike for the Homeless" tour from Big Sur, California to Ocean City, Maryland to bring awareness to a social issue he is deeply passionate about.

In partnership with Tahoe Youth and Family Services, Dan is using the trip in an effort to raise funds for the agency and increase awareness of homelessness.

Dan will be leaving Big Sur on May 22, 2017. He has no predetermined route, but will be passing through the Sierra Nevada on SR-88, and through South Lake Tahoe.

What is Autism? What Causes Autism? Can Autism be Treated? is the next lecture at the U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village on May 18. This is presented by the UC Davis Mind Institute featuring David Amaral Ph.D., distinguished professor from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

From the day they set foot in the kindergarten classroom, students at Sierra House Elementary school learn about soil, seeds, planting and growing food, and now parents at the school are raising money to take lessons for all K-5 students to the next level.

Most places take just one day to officially "Pay it Forward" but one person in the South Lake Tahoe community has made it his goal to cause a ripple effect of kindness through the community for a whole week.

International "Pay it Forward" day is on Friday, April 28 and more than 80 countries and 70 cities across America have made proclamations to join the global initiative and make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness across the world. Small acts of kindness, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.

Investigators continue to unravel the bizarre circumstances surrounding a Carson City woman who was arrested Friday after she allegedly faked her 10-year-old son's death in order to generate money through community donations and a GoFundMe account, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

On Friday, April 14, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was contacted to investigate the possibility of a fraudulent claim of a child’s recent death and concerns that the child could be alive and endangered at a South Carson Street motel.

South Tahoe High School is still an accredited school. That was the message given during Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees as staff updated them on their ongoing efforts to hit the targets set for the next visit by Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) in March of 2018.

Several parents have voiced their concerns that students aren't getting in the colleges of their choice due to the school's status.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless hosted over 100 people at the second South Lake Tahoe Warm Room Open House event on February 22, 2017. We were proud to honor City Councilwoman Wendy David for her participation in the establishment of the Warm Room. David was facilitator of the Lake Tahoe Collaborative when a committee was established to create a vision and a plan for the Warm Room. Her support through nonprofit collaboration and in her role at the City of South Lake Tahoe has been greatly appreciated by all at TCH who have had the honor to work with her.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board formally accepted the resignation of Chad Houck, the principal of South Tahoe High during their Tuesday night meeting, though word of the upcoming change in leadership had been circulating for weeks.

"Chad will be seeking other opportunities," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater.

The popular principal has received a lot of support from parents, the community and staff.

If you have three-to-five hours a week to help a child, then Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) needs you. Help guide a child through a complex system of social workers, foster parents, and lawyers, while building a consistent, caring, mentoring relationship.

CASAs child advocates are tasked with getting to know a particular child and their specific needs and then communicating those needs, and the child’s voice, to the court. This information is highly critical in the decision-making process of juvenile court proceedings.

The next Tahoe Chamber "Connect for a Cause" mixer will be a joint event with the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals on March 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Connect for a Cause: Mixed Up Mixer is a great opportunity for both memberships to mix & mingle with one another while learning how these local organizations benefit the South Shore community.

This social event will include tasty appetizers, 1 drink ticket, and a door prize from each organization. It is free for members and $20 for non-members.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless held an open house Wednesday, February 22 to show the community their new winter home, introduce volunteers and board members, answer questions and honor South Lake Tahoe Councilmember, and Mayor Pro Tem, Wendy David.

David has been a driving force in the community to provide the basic, necessary temporary shelter to those in housing insecurity during the dangerously cold season.

Due to the storm forecast to high the Lake Tahoe Basin, Sierra-at-Tahoe has decided to not open on Sunday.

They said they've checked multiple forecasts and spoke with the National Weather Service, and since both were advising people to not travel over the mountain roads they closed due to safety concerns.

"We believe that the best call for everyone's safety is to suspend operations for tomorrow," the ski resort said on social media. "Your safety is our primary concern."
