Column: Healthier, happier holiday celebrations
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/12/2020 - 2:20pmAs we prepare to say goodbye (and maybe even good riddance) to 2020, the end of the year brings several holidays. Whether celebrating Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanza, and of course, New Year’s Eve, remember that indoor holiday gatherings with others not in your immediate household can put you, your community, and those you care about at risk. As challenging as it is, staying home for the holidays is your best way to protect yourself and loved ones, and help slow the spread of COVID-19 in a time when healthcare and essential workers critically need that support.
Column: Wildfires happen. Is your community prepared?
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/25/2019 - 7:33amWelcome to summer! The solstice officially arrived Friday at 8:54 a.m., welcoming in the longest day of the year. As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.
Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

Loved ones remembered at Light up a Life
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/16/2018 - 6:07pmAs the days get shorter approaching the winter solstice, we count on the holiday gatherings and Christmas lights in our community to brighten up our lives. For many people, the parties and celebrations in this season are a poignant reminder of what has changed in the past year. Some of the people that have been part of our traditions are no longer here. What we think should be the “happiest time of the year” just seems all wrong.

Mac the Naw says Merry Fishmas to all and wait awhile longer for Sierra lakes to ice over
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/23/2017 - 10:21pmHello fellow anglers. I am happy to say, the winter solstice has come and gone. Meaning, each day now brings one minute longer of daylight. But as we all know, that does not mean it will get any warmer soon. Down here in the Minden and Carson Valleys we've experienced an average of 7 to 10 degree mornings.
Most would think that the higher lakes would be frozen and iced over. I received a report from fellow angler Josh Otto last week. As Josh told me, Caples Lake had high winds and was down right cold and had waves blowing across the lake.
