South Lake Tahoe Community Input Sought for Wildfire Protection Plan

Living in a forest gives great benefits, but it also carries with it the risk of forest fires.

A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) for South Lake Tahoe is being developed jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

The community is being asked to complete a survey which will help the agencies prepare the CWPP. This will enable the creation of a plan on how the south shore will reduce it's risk of wildfire by identifying strategic sites and methods for fuel reduction projects.

Suspicious Fire in South Lake Tahoe Being Investigated

A Wednesday night house fire in South Lake Tahoe has turned into a criminal investigation.

South Lake Tahoe Police officers and fire fighters responded to a residential fire in the 1100 block of Long Valley Avenue at 6:10 pm. They found the home fully engulfed in flames with fire starting to spread to nearby trees, though they were able to contain the fire to the area of the burning home. It appears the house is likely to be a total loss.

The house has received the attention of the police and fire department prior to Wednesday night's fire.

A Time of Giving: The South Lake Tahoe Community Helps Others Through Christmas Cheer

Firefighters snuff attic blaze at Emerald Bay Road restaurant

South Lake Tahoe firefighters were able to contain a fire in the attic of Lake Tahoe Pizza Co., in the 1100 block of Emerald Bay Road on Monday night.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, said South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Shift Commander Rob Hembree in a news release. No injuries were reported.

The fire department responded at 11:09 p.m. Other responding agencies were the Lake Valley Fire Protection District, CalFire and Tahoe Douglas Protection District.

Update: More details on fatal plane crash in South Lake Tahoe

A single engine Mooney airplane crashed shortly after take off from the South Lake Tahoe airport at approximately 11:10 AM today.

The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.

The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.

South Lake Tahoe emergency responders rescue man drowning at Tahoe Keys

A man who nearly drowned earlier this week at Lake Tahoe in the Tahoe Keys owes his life to those who saw him struggle and dialed 911, and members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and El Dorado County Search and Rescue team that swam in and saved him.

Witnesses on Monday saw the man in trouble while he was swimming near the boat docks and called 911. South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded and was escorted out to where the man was seen swimming, said Fire Chief Bruce Martin.

South Lake Tahoe man dies in stabbing, suspect remains at large

A 28-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was stabbed to death early Saturday morning and a suspect in the killing remains at large, South Lake Tahoe police say.

The incident began as a fight on Pioneer Trail near the Americana Village Suites and was reported to authorities at around 3:30 a.m., said Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The victim, who was in a fight with the suspect and other men, was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital by family members and died from a stab wound to the torso area.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Receives Technology Innovation Award

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department received a Technology Innovation Award by iPCR, the Electronic Patient Care Reporting System for Fire and Ambulance Services, at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

This award has only been given to five agencies in 20 years. It is for the “2013 Technology Innovation Award” and was given to SLTFD to recognize the exemplary work in implementing a technologically advanced patient care system that is fully electronic.

Lake Valley, South Lake Tahoe firefighters to hold fundraiser Sunday for fallen Granite Mountain Hotshot crew

Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department are joining efforts in a “Fill the Boot” style fundraiser for the 19 Firefighters from the Granite Mountain Hotshots who perished in the Arizona fires. The fundraiser will be held this Sunday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Highway 50 near the Bug Station in Meyers.

A benefit has been formed by the Prescott Fire Department and 100 percent of the funds collected in South Lake Tahoe will be donated towards to families of the 19 firefighters who lost their lives in the Arizona fires.

Firefighters act fast, contain fire at South Lake Tahoe Red Hut restaurant

An oven fire inside the Red Hut restaurant at mid-town South Lake Tahoe was extinguished quickly by firefighters early Tuesday morning. No one was injured.

Flames 4 to 5 feet high and smoke were seen coming from the oven when South Lake Tahoe firefighters arrived at restaurant at around 5:30 a.m.

The quick response from firefighters kept the fire contained and was rapidly extinguished leaving minimal damage to building and there were no injuries, said Karl Koeppen, shift commander for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The Second Annual Fourth of July Parade and Event is sponsored this year by the American Legion Post #795 in South Lake Tahoe. The parade will stage in the parking lot of Big 5 at the Y, and begin traveling East at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 4, 2013. The parade will conclude at the American Legion Post #795 by 11:00 am.

SLTFD: blown transformer may have started fire

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded this afternoon to the 3500 block of Pioneer Trail near Ski Run for a fire that knocked out power between Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard. Early word via scanner from firefighters at the scene is the fire, now knocked down, was caused by a blown transformer. It is unclear at this time if any homes or structures were damaged or if any evacuations were made.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department raises $6,000 for St. Baldrick's Foundation

South Lake Tahoe Firefighters participated and raised $6,000 in the second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 8. The St. Baldrick’s foundation was formed in 2005 and surpassed $100 million in donations last year for childhood cancer research across the nation. The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department put together one of several teams from the community who all rallied together to raise money.

Father and two sons injured when SUV crashes into South Lake Tahoe Denny's

A South Lake Tahoe father and two sons were injured Thursday morning after the SUV they were in crashed Denny's restaurant on Al Tahoe Boulevard, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department reports.

Todd Jackson, 28, suffered moderate injuries in the 8:50 a.m. accident after being extricated from the 2002 Dodge Durango by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department. He was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno. Jackson's two sons, 11 and 8-years-old, were taken to Barton Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Chief Bruce Martin has promoted Kenin Fairley to Shift Commander. Fairley’s first day as Shift Commander was Feb. 9.

“My thanks to those department members who assisted in the process, as well as the three outside raters. I also wish to thank Captain Jon Anderson for stepping up to the acting position for the last few weeks. Fire at South Lake Tahoe home had marijuana grow operation

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded early Sunday morning to a house fire at Carson and Armstrong avenues where there was a marijuana grow operation.

According to a news release, all three South Tahoe Fire engines and both medic units were committed at the fire scene, reported at 12:30 a.m. The fire was knocked down quickly so both primary and secondary searches were completed with no victims found and overhaul began.

Liberty Energy and Southwest Gas responded to secure the utilities and SLTFD was able to shut down the
water to the house.

Hot ash sparks deck fire at South Lake Tahoe home

Firefighters in South Lake Tahoe knocked down a deck fire Jan 12 that was started by hot ash.
Karl Koeppen, shift commander for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, said minimal damage was done to the structure and interior of the home, located in the Pioneer Village area. The fire burned the deck structure but did not creep into the interior. The residents were allowed to stay in the house after the fire was knocked down.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department Has Begun Its Holiday Route

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has begun handing out candy canes from the decorated fire truck driving throughout the community through Dec. 23. Each night, the holiday truck will make its way through specific sections of the City and the complete schedule is listed below.

These scheduled dates will be dependent on the weather, and may be changed due to driving conditions or emergency responses.

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry announced the appointment of Bruce Martin as South Lake Tahoe Fire Departments Interim Fire Chief at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“I am very excited to welcome Chief Martin to lead, encourage and support our dedicated team of fire fighters,” said Kerry. “Chief Martin’s long and exemplary career in fire service provides him with a platform to be an excellent leader as the Interim Fire Chief.”

Sand bags available for South Shore Lake Tahoe residents

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department would like to remind residents that sand bags are available at Fire Station 3 located at 2101 Lake Tahoe Boulevard (near the “Y”) and at Bijou Park located at 1201 Al Tahoe Boulevard. There is no cost for the sand bags and residents are limited to ten (10) sand bags per household.

To pick-up your sand bags at Fire Station 3, access the rear of the property from James Avenue. At the back of the station is a large sand mound and residents can fill their own bags. Bags and shovels are located in a bin next to the sand mound.

Light up South Lake Tahoe Event a Success

The First “Light up South Lake Tahoe” event took place over Thanksgiving weekend with multiple businesses along Highway 50 participating by decorating their store fronts and turning on their lights as the South Lake Tahoe Fire Departments fire truck and Streets Department snow plow led the procession from Stateline to the “Y.”

“We are very pleased with the turnout of tonight’s event with at least 150 people coming out to watch the tree lighting and we look forward to next year’s event being even bigger and better,” said Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis.

Forest Service: Fire at Elks Point Road near Highway 50 at Lake Tahoe fully contained at 2.6 acres

UPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.

Brush fire knocked down off of Eloise in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe fire crews responded Tuesday night to a small brush fire, about quarter acre or less in size off of Eloise and 7th street. It was knocked down at 8:16 p.m. Firefighters who arrived reported smoke billowing with a low rate of spread and were able to get a handle on it with the fire trucks called to it. Firefighters built a "scratch line" ring around the fire and quickly knocked it down. The fire was called in at 8:10 p.m.
