Girls Basketball Round-Up - South Tahoe and Whittell High Schools

The South Tahoe Lady Vikings Varsity team currently has a 3-3 record in 1A Northern Nevada League action. They are coming off of a full week of basketball action.

On Friday, January 2, South Tahoe lost to Elko 52-33. Senior Ally King led all STHS scorers with 10, followed by Sophomore Drue Chapman's 9.

The girls had a win against Spring Creek 46-42 on Saturday, January 4. King and Chapman led scorers again with 17 and 16 respectively. They each had two 3 pointers each.

South Lake Tahoe locals help set Workout World Record

An attempt to set the record for the World's Largest Simultaneous Group Workout happened at noon on Saturday, January 3 at cities around the globe, and South Lake Tahoe was not left out.

For the 18 people who showed up, it wasn't all about breaking a record, it was about starting off the new year right with an hour of exercise. They walked along the new bike trail from Sawmill Pond to South Tahoe High School and back.

STHS: Counselors on hand to help students cope with Dejon Smith's death

The administration team at South Tahoe High School met this weekend to prepare for the return of students on Monday, the first day of school after the death of their classmate, freshman Dejon Smith.

Principal Chad Houck sent out a phone and email message Sunday evening to all parents to inform them of the plan for Monday.

A photograph hangs in our father’s home—Needham Grammar School, Lodi, California, class of 1944, 120 kids from a different time. Amazingly, Dad could name a fair number of those classmates 70 years later.

A teacher for 25 years, the former students of South Tahoe High School will remember having Mr. Campodonico for history or civics. Vince held an optimistic belief in society and citizenship that he practiced all life long. He was always planning a trip, back from a trip or on a trip. Vince enjoyed people and would want us to say his goodbyes to his friends and family.

South Tahoe Viking Girls win State Soccer Championship

For the fourth time in five years the South Tahoe High School girls soccer team has brought home top honors from the Nevada State Championships.

The Lady Vikings and the Sierra Vista High team were tied 2-2 after the Division 1-A regulation match after South Tahoe's Ashlee Schouten and Maia Bickert each scored goals, one in each half. Freshman Annie Brejc shot in the winning goal in overtime, resulting in a 3-2 victory over the team from Southern Nevada.

On the boys side, Truckee and Chapparal were tied in their match as well. Truckee went on to win the State Championship.

Vail Resorts honors 49 local non-profits during EpicPromise grant giveaway

As part of their mission to give back to the community and protect the environment, Vail Resorts gave away 49 grants to Lake Tahoe area groups during a ceremony on Tuesday at Heavenly Valley.

Ceremony to celebrate opening of new bike path segment

If you've driven past South Tahoe High School in the last month you've most likely noticed a new bike trail heading from Lake Tahoe Blvd and Viking Way, through the forest to Sawmill Pond.

This new segment of bike trail, which is part of the Lake Tahoe Blvd Enhancement Project, will help to connect Meyers to the City of South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe students to perform a Veterans Day Musical Tribute

South Tahoe Middle School, South Tahoe High School and Tahoe Valley Elementary
Bands, Orchestras, and Choirs celebrate and honor veterans of the armed services at the concert which will be at the STMS multi-purpose room on Wednesday, November 12 for the concert.

The theme for the night is "A Veterans Day Musical Tribute."

Forest Service set to start fall pile burning in South Lake Tahoe this week

The Forest Service will start their fall prescribed burn operations in South Lake Tahoe this week. The weather conditions expected on Tuesday and Wednesday will determine which area will be burned first.

The two areas that will have piles burned are located near South Tahoe High School and in Christmas Valley.

100 acres near the high school are planned to be burned between October 14 and 16 with spoke expected to travel Northeast.

15 acres in Christmas Valley are planned to be burned between October 14 and 15 with smoke traveling in a Northeast direction.

Op/Ed: I'm in Support of Measure F

My wife and I bought a retirement home in Tahoe in 2002, in part because there was a college in South Lake Tahoe. I have been on the LTCC Foundation Board since 2009. I am writing to urge everyone to support Measure F to modernize Lake Tahoe Community College and increase the educational opportunities offered there.

Support the performing arts at South Tahoe High School

The Performing Arts Booster Association (PABA) at South Tahoe High School is looking for members to help support the student arts programs. They are a non-profit organization that was created to provide support to the students and staff of the Tahoe Arts & Design Academy (TADA) at the school.

Community members can join for free. PABA also needs donors and volunteers to
- help assist with production costs of musicals, plays and concerts
- provide funds for guest teachers and student scholarships

Lake Tahoe Unified students head back to school

It's once again time to hear the ring of the school bell, to see the yellow buses going through the neighborhoods, and hear the happy voices from the school playgrounds.

The summer vacation ends Monday for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as walk, ride or drive to their first day of school.

Classes at South Tahoe High School start at 7:55 a.m. and school is out at 2:40 p.m. South Tahoe Middle School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:55 p.m.

The four elementary schools have different start and end times:
Bijou, grades K-5 runs from 8:35 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

LTCC Coyotes prepare for first soccer season

Soccer fever has hit the campus at Lake Tahoe Community College as both the men's and women's intercollegiate teams prepare for the 2014 fall season.

We miss Kaleb

Kaleb James Martin Curtzwiler died Aug. 9, 2010. He was 28.

Mr. Curtzwiler was born Jan. 27, 1982, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

The 2000 South Tahoe High School graduate was an avid soccer player. Although he did not ski competitively, it was a sport he participated in with his family and one that he excelled at.

The day after he graduated from high school he joined the Navy. His father, Kenny Curtzwiler, who was a Captain in the Nevada Army National Guard, swore him in. Mr. Curtzwiler served for five years, rising to the rank of E5.

Chad Houck Named New South Tahoe High Principal

Thomas "Chad" Houck was named the new Principal of South Tahoe High School during Tuesday's School Board meeting.

Houck, his wife Kelly and their four children will be relocating to South Lake Tahoe during the summer (he starts his home search on Wednesday with Realtor Adele Lucas). His first day on the job will be August 1st.

Teenage Boy Hit by Car on Way to South Tahoe High School Monday Morning

A young man was treated and released for minor injuries Monday morning after he was hit by a car as he rode his bike to school on Viking Way.

A parent was leaving South Tahoe High after dropping off her student near the Student Union. As she was exiting the side road coming up from the tennis courts she stopped at the stop sign. It was very congested as it was 7:50 a.m., the start of school. The parent didn't see the bicyclist coming up on her left and entered the road way, striking the boy.

As a precaution he was transported to the hospital with bruises and abrasions.

It was a sea of blue and gold, mortarboard and tassels on Friday afternoon at South Tahoe High School as 246 seniors took the next step in their lives as they graduated in front of friends, parents and classmates.

Thunderheads and darkened skies threatened to dampen the celebrants but sunshine prevailed and ceremonies went off without a hitch tossed in by Mother Nature.

TRiO--Upward Bound at South Tahoe High Is Looking for New Members This Summer!

The Upward Bound Program (UB) at South Tahoe High School is currently accepting applications for this Summer’s Academy and the next academic year!

Students in grades 9-12, including rising 9th graders, are encouraged to apply. UB is the newest TRiO grant at Lake Tahoe Community College and is designed to provide fundamental support to high school students in their preparation for college. UB serves 60 students who are from low-income families, who are potentially the first in their families to go to college, or students who are at risk of academic failure.

No Bomb Found During Search of South Lake Tahoe's Y

Customers and employees were evacuated from businesses around noon today at the South Y Center in response to suspicious circumstances surrounding an overheard conversation and a possible bomb.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department received a call from an employee at the South Y K-Mart, stating they had overheard a suspicious conversation between store patrons. The employee stated that the patrons had exited the store and that the employee walked around the shopping center and reported hearing a ticking sound coming from the shopping center general mailbox.

Richard Swanson Family, Police Officers and Citizens Honored During South Lake Tahoe Ceremony

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department used Peace Officer Memorial Week to honor a few of their own along with some local citizens on Thursday.

In a ceremony in front of the police station, Police Chief Brian Uhler bestowed the following awards:

- Officer Andy Eissinger received an award for Distinguished Service
- Dispatcher Jillian Broadfoot awarded for Meritorius Service
- Todd and Zetta Friedel and Cory Escobar received the Citizen Award of Merit
- Explorer Daniel Loyola received the Distinguished Explorer award

Graduating Seniors at South Tahoe High No Longer Required to Buy Caps & Gowns

Walking down the aisle on the South Tahoe High School football field is a long standing tradition for graduating seniors.

While that tradition is in tact, the way caps and gowns are handled are changing.

Changes in the California Education Code - EC 49010(a) - now classify the graduation ceremonies as a educational activity which mandates students can no longer be charged a fee for the required cap and gown purchase.

South Tahoe High Student Meghan Byrd Wins National Honor

For the sixth consecutive year, South Tahoe High School students have won honors in the California Fourth District Congressional Art Competition.

STHS student Meghan Bryd won the competition this year with her photograph in honor of a holocaust survivor.

South Tahoe High Principal Promoted to LTUSD Assistant Superintendent

Ivonne Larson, the Principal of South Tahoe High, was named Assistant Superintendent by the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board on Tuesday, April 22. She will be in charge of Secondary Education, Career Technical Education and AVID for the district starting July 1, 2014.

This is the first time LTUSD has had an Assistant Superintendent since Barbara Davis resigned in August of 2005. The new position for Assistant Superintendent is part time.

The District will post a job opening for STHS Principal this week to replace Larson.

South Lake Tahoe Fuels Reduction Work Resumes

Over 460 acres of Forest Service latd in South Lake Tahoe will be thinned out this Spring to improve forest health and reduce the risk of sever wildiires on the South Shore.

Starting Monday, April 21, The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will resume work on the South Shore Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project.

Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe landed another major slopestyle victory at the Burton U.S. Open Friday. Canadian Spencer O’Brien took second and Isabel Derungs of Switzerland third in the women’s final. South Lake Tahoe, the tight-knit ski community big on Olympic athletes will honor its three USA team members in a city-wide celebration, Saturday, March 15.

Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, who won gold for snowboarding slopestyle and freeskiing halfpipe respectively, and Hannah Teter who placed fourth in snowboarding halfpipe, will be lauded at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

Barton Helping Beyond the Hospital Walls

It takes collaboration and action to meet a community’s health needs. In March 2012, Barton Health engaged with the community to complete a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) of South Lake Tahoe’s health needs. Part of the Affordable Care Act, all nonprofit hospitals must identify health needs for vulnerable, often under-served, populations within their community and create an action plan to address these needs.

Restrictions Put on South Tahoe High Basketball Game Saturday

Due to an incident which happened at Tuesday night's South Tahoe High School basketball game, school officials have put restrictions on Saturday's game against Fernley.

Emails and phone calls went out to the parents of all STHS students, stating that "a large number of students violated the expected behaviors of positive team support, being welcoming hosts, and upholding the Viking Goals."

Because of this, school administration will only allow students to attend "and remain seated with their parents" at the game.

South Tahoe High Students Collecting Jeans for Homeless Youth

In a quest to make a difference, South Tahoe High School senior Brooke Georguson is collecting jeans that will be donated to homeless youth in the Reno/Tahoe community. On top of that goal, Brooke wants to collect the most jeans in the region so her school will be awarded a $10,000 grant.

Josh Kornbeck Named Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

Selected among several local outstanding youth Josh Kornbeck will compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the California Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 college scholarship from Tupperware Brands Corporation. As the new Youth of the Year for Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, 16-year old Josh is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

For just $30 per ticket you'll get a steak and lobster dinner prepared by local residents, the Romagnolo family. Dinner is at 5 pm and will be held in the STHS Studen Union. The play will start after dinner in the school's new theater.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

South Tahoe Girls Soccer Team is #1 in State

November 16, 2013: This just in: The South Tahoe High School girl's soccer team has won the Nevada State 1-A Championship! In Friday's first round action the Lady Vikings beat Faith Luthern by a score of 2-1 which brought them to today's championship round against Pahrump Valley. South Tahoe was victorious by a score of 3-2 and is crowned state champ.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

School and Community Safety at the Forefront

It was just 3 minutes from the time a gun was shot today in Sparks, Nevada until the first police officer arrived at Sparks Middle School. In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.
