Keith Karl Klein, age 78, died peacefully at his home in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, surrounded by his wife and close friends, following a recent diagnosis of cancer.

National Night Out celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

National Night Out is held across the country on the first Tuesday of August and is a time for the public to come together to learn how to be safer as a community. This year in South Lake Tahoe it was held at Bijou Elementary and had multiple agencies interacting with youth and adults with hands-on exhibits and activities.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue honors many at annual awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - "This is a good day for the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department," said Chief Jeff Meston as he began the annual awards ceremony, celebrating the men and women of SLTFR.

To begin the afternoon, Chief Meston officially welcomed Battalion Chief Jay Manning to the department. Manning came on board at the end of November from Visalia, California where he worked for 18.5 years for the fire department. His wife Stephanie pinned his uniform as son Jacob and daughter Harley looked on. The family is wrapping up their move to the Sierra.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is another chance to become part of the South Tahoe Action Team (STAT), a team that provides valuable assistance to the community during a disaster.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) is now accepting applications for the next four-week long STAT Class starting April 18, and continuing on April 25, May 2 and May 16. The Wednesday classes run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and participants must be able to commit to all four classes.

South Tahoe Action Team graduates honored at meeting

A new group of local volunteers graduated from the South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) program during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

There were 16 citizens participate in this session of the STAT training.

Community action team, STAT, starts new session in South Lake Tahoe

A new team of South Lake Tahoe residents is being recruited to take part in the next South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) training session. This program is designed to incorporate trained citizens in the field with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and other first responders during times of crisis.

The next four-week session starts on Monday, February 5, 2018 and there are still spots available in the free program. They meet on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. at the SLTFR Training Center next to the Boys & Girls Club at 1100 Lyons Avenue.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds annual awards ceremony

An overflowing crowd of family, friends and community members filled the City Council chambers Monday as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue held their 5th annual awards ceremony.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

"Your recognition is well deserved, and well earned," said Mayor Wendy David.

New graduating class of South Tahoe Action Team members

The South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) is now stronger by ten members as the most recent class of graduates was announced at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

Nearly 100 residents have been trained in the program offered by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR).

“The STAT program is designed to have neighbors helping neighbors,” said South Tahoe Fire Department Chief Jeff Meston.

Chief Jeff Meston of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is the recipient of the Ed Bent Training Excellence Award in recognition of being the Outstanding Fire Instructor of the Year at the California Training Officers Symposium held this week in Fresno, California.

The award was created many years ago on behalf of Ed Bent for his contribution as a founding father of statewide training and curriculum for the California Fire Service.

Truckee River nearing flood stage as torrential rains hit South Lake Tahoe

Emergency crews have been busy all day, responding to homes, businesses and roads flooding. The number of calls haven't been accumulated yet, but those listening to police and sheriff scanner feeds know it must be dozens if not, hundreds.

The Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe is at 11.26 feet as of 7:00 p.m. Sunday. 11.50 feet is considered major flooding with 12.5 feet at the disastrous level.

South Lake Tahoe's July 4th Parade canceled

Just as the annual parade through South Lake Tahoe on the 4th of July was gaining momentum, it has been canceled for 2015.

A disappointed JoAnn Conner, owner of the parade organizer Golden Bear Events, released the message on Facebook and via email on Thursday, June 17.

"I am sorry to have to report that the popular 4th of July Parade is cancelled this year," Conner said. "There were a couple of huge last minute hurdles that just came up. No time to overcome them."

City of South Lake Tahoe starts community action teams to help in disasters

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department is looking for locals who'd like to help out during the time of large scale emergencies from winds, heavy snow, flooding, wildfire and avalanches.

STAT has been formed and that stands for South Tahoe Action Teams.

Teams of citizens will be given eight hours of training so they can help out when local resources are overwhelmed. After training they will be incorporated in the field with the SLTFD and other first responders during times of crisis.
