League to Save Lake Tahoe: Measure C crucial to lake's clarity

The League to Save Lake Tahoe supports Measure C, the ballot measure to fix potholes and repair road surfaces in the City of South Lake Tahoe. Fixing our roads protects Lake Tahoe, and is a critical complement to the advocacy by the League and many others to reduce pollution associated with Tahoe’s traffic. Taking action now is essential if we are to restore the Lake to its historic clarity.

Highway 50 roadwork in South Lake Tahoe extended through November

Construction on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe will be extended through the end of November, weather permitting. The work remaining includes the installation of new traffic signals at Tahoe Keys Boulevard and 3rd Street.

Expect lane closures and extra traffic on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue during these final stages.

The project is a three-year one and includes water quality improvements, a new stop light at Lodi, timed traffic lights from the Y to Trout creek, bike lanes, bus pull outs, sidewalks and retaining walls.

Lake Tahoe Search and Rescue calls on the rise

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Even though the busy summer season is over, those hiking in the mountains around Lake Tahoe needing help getting to safety are on the rise.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.

From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.

Winter storm possible for Lake Tahoe by end of week

A Winter Storm is forecast to move into northern California and northern Nevada by Friday with snow impacting travel over the Sierra Saturday and Sunday. Windy conditions and periods of rain and snow are possible for western Nevada.

Couple safe after overnight rescue on Mt. Tallac

El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, with assistance from a California Highway Patrol Helicopter, made an overnight rescue of a married couple on Mt. Tallac Monday morning.

At 3:00 a.m. October 23, the Sheriff's Office received a call for rescue on the eastern slope of Mt. Tallac.

USFS celebrates Best in Basin awards for Camp Richardson and Stinger projects

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), along with partners Camp Richardson Resort and the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), were recognized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) with two “Best in Basin” awards for the Camp Richardson Resort and Campground BMP retrofit and the Kingsbury Stinger Trail Project.

Table Fire west of Lake Tahoe now at 110 acres, 15% contained

The Table Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe near Ice House Reservoir has now burned 110 acres and firefighters have it 15 percent contained.

Fire officials from the U.S. Forest Service say the updated acreage (up from Wednesday's 50 acres) is mostly due to digitally mapping the fire line. The fire is in remote country and not threatening any structures. The fire is in a sheltered location so the predicted winds on Saturday are not expected to have a significant effect.

Highway 50 construction in South Lake Tahoe extended

Construction on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe has been extended through the end of October, weather permitting.

Expect lane closures near the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue. No detours will be in place so expect heavy traffic and delays.

Caltrans announced Tuesday they are working hard to finish this stretch of the new storm drain system project, suggesting drivers to plan ahead and #BeWorkZoneAlert.

"Thanks for your patience as we work to help protect Lake Tahoe's water and keep it clean for generations to come," said Caltrans.

Wind fuels lightning caused fire west of Lake Tahoe

9:30AM Update 10/11 - Fire was active last night as it slowly backed down the mountain towards the indirect check lines. The fire is in remote country and not threatening any structures.

So far, 50 acres have burned and it is 10 percent contained.

The smoke from the Table fire is visible from Highway 50 and the Tahoe Basin. This is a lightning start from a previous storm that Sunday's high wind event activated.

Note: the smoke blanketing the Placerville and Pollock Pines areas is not from the local fires.

Genoa Peak Fire nears containment

Update 8/24 6PM - The size of the Genoa Peak Fire on the Carson Ranger District has been updated after the GPS mapped it 5.9 acres today. The fire is 75 percet contained with 100 percent containment expected by the end of today. There are currently 31 firefighters on scene.

Multiple fires start as lightning storm passes through the Sierra and Carson City

There are several lightning caused fires currently burning in the Carson City/Carson Valley area of Nevada as well as ones at Genoa Peak and Duane Bliss Peak above Lake Tahoe.

A storm system is still in the area with multiple lightning strikes.

Sinkhole near Zephyr Cove; temporary fix for busy Lake Tahoe weekend

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. A sink hole appeared in the slow lane of westbound Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove on Friday, prompting closure of the roadway for much of the day. The hole, about three-feet wide, may have been created by erosion from a storm drain under the pavement.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) plans to fill temporarily fill and repave the hole with roadway base and paving materials with the goal of reopening the lane for weekend travel.

Motorists can expect periodic lane closures through the coming weeks as the sinkhole is repaired.

Johnson Lane residents invited to meeting on area drainage master plan

New freeway connecting Lake Tahoe to Reno opens Wednesday

The trip from Lake Tahoe to Reno just got a bit shorter as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) opens the final three miles of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway project to traffic on Wednesday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m.

Construction on this final, southern portion of the project began in 2015.

As part of a phased opening, the new freeway ramps between Fairview Drive at the northern end of the new Carson City Freeway will open later that afternoon or on August 3.

Chabad introduces five-week Hebrew reading crash course

The flashcard based language course developed by the Jewish Learning Institute, promises users that they can learn to read Hebrew in only five weeks if they follow the program. Beginning Monday August 14 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Rabbi Mordey Richler of Chabad at Lake Tahoe will conduct the five sessions of the new course, Read it in Hebrew, at the Ski Run Marina.

Opinion: Clean up South Lake Tahoe

Littering in Tahoe is a big problem. Everywhere you go, there is trash and no one picks it up. People don't throw their trash in the garbage; they leave their trash on the ground and it makes its way into the lake. Other people who pass by it don't pick it up either. The problem started with the tourists who come to the beaches and throw their trash anywhere and they think that it won’t do anything to our lake. Tourists don’t take care of nature and our lake as much as the locals here. Some locals leave their trash everywhere as well.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

The first South Lake Tahoe Police Department community gathering was a successful one on Saturday as the 50th anniversary of the department was celebrated with hundreds of people at Lakeview Commons. There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.

Going above and beyond the call of duty was recognized with awards to both staff members and the public.

TTUSD and Auerbach Engineering team up on water quality project

Construction season has started in the Tahoe basin and the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District will utilize the warm weather and their student’s summer exit to complete projects that were approved under Measures E and U in 2014.

Auerbach Engineering Corporation was selected through a competitive bid process to provide Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) services for the Tahoe Lake Elementary reconstruction and the Rideout/Tahoe Lake Elementary temporary relocation projects.

State Route 89 (Placer County/El Dorado County): Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from the Tahoe City “Wye” to Alpine Meadows Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from Valley View Drive to General Creek State Park from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for dead tree removal.

People not littering roads could save California $67 million annually

You see it along the highway, clinging to the fences, wrapped around bushes or filling up culverts and blowing along the road. "It" is trash, an ever-growing and costly problem in California.

Last year, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) spent $67 million on litter removal, collecting enough litter, trash, and debris from highways to fill almost 9,000 garbage trucks.

“That money would have been better spent fixing our roads,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty.
