Sierra-at-Tahoe - Groomed conditions on 17 of their 20 open trails. 6 lifts are open.
Broadway Terrain Park is open. No new snow in the last 24 hours. The base depth is 10" and the summit is 20". Mostly sunny, with a high near 48. West southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Just as predicted, snow started falling in South Lake Tahoe at noon on Tuesday.

The attached photo is from the Caltrans camera located at Twin Bridges at 12:30 p.m., giving people an idea of what is on the way.

As of 12:30 p.m. on November 24, the following road controls are in place:
From Meyers to 3 miles east of Kyburz on Highway 50, chains are required on all vehicles except or 4WD with snow tires.

Northbound on Hwy 89 from north of Camp Richardson along the west shore to Truckee, Chains are required except on 4WD with snow tires.

Schools are open today, Monday, November 16, 2015 for LTUSD, Douglas County and LTCC.

Road controls this morning:

US 50: Is open with no control over Echo Summit. From Stateline to mile post 14.6 above Carson City, Chains or Snow Tires.

US 88: Chains or 4WD with snow tires from on CA-88 from mile post 41.7 in Amador County to mile post 13.4 in Alpine County in Nevada.

SR 207 Kingsbury Grade: Chains or snow tires from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 12.0.

Hwy 395: Snow Tires required on US-395 from mile post 0.2 in Douglas County to mile post 23.7

Mother Nature has put in her best effort and the opening date at both Heavenly and Northstar have been moved up to November 14. The new snow totals overnight, combined with both the anticipated snowfall Monday night and snowmaking efforts, have helped the resorts open a week early.

Sierra-at-Tahoe hasn't given an opening date but Kirkwood has put November 21 on the calendar for their big day. Sierra's marketing team told South Tahoe Now that they are getting excited since snow is falling, and plan on opening as soon as possible.

Boreal and Mt. Rose resorts have already opened.

Forecasters are calling the weather system heading to Lake Tahoe Sunday evening the first storm of the year, but what it will actually leave behind is still sketchy and will become more clear as the system approaches the Sierra.

The date was October 14, 1975. Tropper Gary Gifford was on duty for the Nevada Highway Patrol when the First National Bank of Nevada in Round Hill was robbed. The armed gunman escaped and left by car on Highway 50 towards Cave Rock. At noon, just before the tunnel, Tropper Gifford pulled over the robbery suspect.

There was an altercation between Gifford and the suspect when the tropper was shot and killed. The suspect was able to force another man to drive him around the lake to Kings Beach where he took four people hostage. Later that evening the suspect surrendered to authorities.

22 years in the making, GM of Sierra at Tahoe John Rice, has been living the dream. Rice contributed to the “snowboarding energy” in Tahoe, and specifically at Sierra at Tahoe, in the early 90’s. At a time when snowboarding was barely allowed at the resort and had a non-existent park scene, Rice made a mark.

We were making snowcats do things they weren’t made to do at a time when [snowboard terrain] parks weren’t even allowed [at Sierra at Tahoe].

The heavy holiday traffic in South Lake Tahoe is showing up on the newly installed CalTrans message boards. As of 11 a.m., it was a 14 minute drive from the intersection of Highway 50 and Pioneer Trail near Stateline to the "Y." It is a 70 minute trip from that same location to Meyers and 160 minutes to Placerville.

Three new message signs were unveiled in South Lake Tahoe just before the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Wildfire and invasive species weren't the only topics of this year's Tahoe Summit. With the theme "Connecting Lake Tahoe’s Environment and Economy Through Innovation and Transportation,” speakers at Monday's event also talked of the importance of improved roadways and access for alternative modes of transportation that will support the anticipated increase in numbers of visitors to Lake Tahoe.

Lawmakers from Nevada and California met Monday on the shores of Lake Tahoe to discuss how to protect a national treasure as it faces continued threats to water clarity, invasive species, wildfire and drought.

A fundraising campaign has been started to get the $5,000 to $10,000 needed to be treated at UC Davis with radiation and for follow-up care. The cancer began in his eye socket and has now infiltrated his sinus cavity.

Doctor's gave Summit two weeks to live without intervention, but his owner Colton Terry wanted to do all he could to let the dog who had helped so many "become an old man."

If you've had to travel on Highway 50 through Meyers this week you've most likely been stuck in one spot for quite a while.

Due to a grinding and paving job on U.S. Highway 50 from Apache Avenue to Country Club Drive in Meyers, motorists have found one lane of controlled traffic each day from from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Monday, the traffic back up started in Meyers and went past the Tahoe Valley Airport.

The "local's way" on Pioneer Trail is affected with the controlled traffic. For those heading over Echo Summit, it will be easier to take Lake Tahoe Blvd. to North Upper Truckee Road.

Once considered rundown and dirty, Reno, as well as neighboring Sparks, is experiencing a staggering rebirth. Only eight percent of their economy now comes from the gaming and tourism industry, with the remainder coming from a boom of the relocation of manufacturing and distribution companies.

What is evident is that the Reno of today is not the Reno of 25 years ago. It isn't even the same Reno of four years ago.
