Update: California OKs plan to use pesticides at Lake Tahoe

The measure now moves to the Environmental Protection Agency. The new rules permit pesticides as a last resort to control invasive species like Eurasian milfoil, an aquatic plansold for aquariums which is choking the bottom of marinas around the lake.

Some seven years, countless meetings and 2,500 pages later, the TRPA draft regional plan and supporting documents are finally ready for your reading enjoyment. While not the action-packed read of a Harry Potter or dark pleasure of "Fifty Shades of Grey," the four tomes of the TRPA holds some unexpected plot twists.
Key among those surprises is the Threshold Evaluation Study, a report I consider the prelude to the Regional Plan because understanding what worked well environmentally after the 1987 Regional Plan helps inform us what needs attention in the new plan.

The Carson Valley Trails Association (CVTA) is making plans for the grand opening of the 16-mile Genoa Trail System, 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. Lake Tahoe Roadside Boat Inspection Stations Open for Season

“Boat inspections are critical to maintaining the health of Lake Tahoe and our local recreation-based economy,” said Ted Thayer, TRPA’s Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator. “Through the efforts of the Tahoe Resource Conservation District’s well-trained inspectors and other private and public partners committed to the Lake, we expect to have another successful season.”

Lake Tahoe environmental report shows promising results

Several environmental gains over the last five years have been made at the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s “Threshold Evaluation Report” released Wednesday, which highlights water quality as a continued area of concern.
The comprehensive report offers a snapshot of the health of the ecosystem in the Tahoe Basin by documenting the status and trends of more than 100 environmental standards ranging from air and water quality to fish and wildlife. The biggest improvements were documented in air and water quality, and scenic resources.

Apparently water is cascading into the street causing portions of the road to buckle, according to dispatch.
Forest Service seeks input for MojoMan Challenge at Heavenly Mountain Resort

Hobart Reservoir to open for 2012 fishing season
Submitted by Editor on Mon, 04/23/2012 - 8:47amHobart Reservoir, a small, high-mountain reservoir, located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, will open for the 2012 fishing season on May 1.
Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 01.
However, this year is entirely different, ice and snow-wise. It will remain open to fishing through September 30.

Tahoe planning agency Governing Board meeting schedule announced

The plan update contains five draft documents for the public, partner agencies and decision makers to review at a minimum for the next two months. Public discussions about the Update will continue through the year, with the Board expected to take final action on the plan by the end of 2012. As you may know, sugar pines and other white pines are plagued by a non-native invasive pathogen. White pine blister rust kills about 90 percent of sugar pines it infects. Scientists and restoration managers have agreed that the only effective restoration strategy is to identify seed trees resistant to the rust and plant their progeny. That is exactly what the Sugar Pine Foundation does and you can help too. Last fall, a volunteer described planting sugar pines as “creating life in our neck of the woods.”

With the ski and board season winding down, it’s almost time to catch some fish in the High Sierra once again.
On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
If you’re new to the Lake Tahoe and Sierra, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire opening weekend:

A year ago, the City of South Lake Tahoe made some choices that resulted in a clear and methodical business plan. We chose to focus on five core missions. That sounds simple enough, but how many times are the words government and focus used in the same sentence?
But it is amazing what a little focus can accomplish. In less than a year, our city is making real progress in pulling ourselves out of the morass that was so scathingly profiled in the 2009/2010 Grand Jury Report.

Washoe offers sacred name 'Tahnu Leweh' for Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe

With the Washoe Tribe's offering and support of El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, a move is underway to rename Lakeview Commons Park at South Lake Tahoe in time for an official June 20 dedication.
Given its 6,000 year history, the Washoe Tribe has presented the name Tahnu Leweh (Pronounced Tah-New Lay-Way) which, in native language, means "all the people's place." It is a name the Tribe would like to gift to El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe as a symbol of peace, prosperity and goodness, said Darrel Cruz, Culture and Language Director for the Washoe Tribe.

The Lahontan Water Quality Control Board has hired an executive director from outside the agency to replace Harold Singer who is retiring.
Patty Zwarts will be leaving her position with CalRecyle where she works in the Materials Management and Local Assistance Division. She was not available for comment.

Fitch Affirms South Tahoe Public Utility District with AA+; Rating Outlook Stable

The firm, which positions itself as a global rating agency dedicated to providing value beyond the rating through independent and prospective credit opinions, research and data, gave the water and sewer district a AA+ rating, noting $10.8 million sewer revenue certificates of participation. The ratings agency also asserts that STPUD continues to have strong reserves in place that protects the district against a reduction in its property tax revenues.
