LTCC Celebrates National Poetry Month With Award Winning Poets

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series is celebrating National Poetry Month on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Aspen Room with poets June Sylvester Saraceno and Laura Wetherington. These award-winning poets will read from their works, engage the audience with a Q and A, and sign copies of their books. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.

Tahoe Valley Area Plan Presented at Next City Council Meeting

The result of months of work and public input on the Tahoe Valley Area Plan will be unveiled at the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 15. There are three concepts that were discussed during previous workshops and presented to the Planning Commission on March 13: A Greenbelt Concept, A Town Center District and a Healthcare Campus District.

City of South Lake Tahoe Holds Business Friendly Workshops

Meyers Residents Turn Out to Fight For their Community

Information was circulating that Meyers was going to be taken over by large parking garages and other unwanted development including a Athlete's Village or Basecamp type feature, much of what was created by a now buried Catalyst Plan. "The Catalyst Project is dead," El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago told the packed house at the California Conservation Corp (CCC) building in Meyers on Wednesday night.

On February 26th, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., the Meyers Community Advisory Council (MCAC) will be hosting a community workshop to discuss and compare the existing Meyers Community Plan with the proposed Meyers Area Plan. All residents and businesses in the unincorporated area of El Dorado County on the South Shore are invited to actively participate in the realization of this vision and are encouraged to offer input.

An additional public workshop will be held on March 19th, from 6:00pm - 8:00pm, to review the Proposed Meyers Area Plan.

County Arts Council Adds Lake Tahoe Board Member

PLACERVILLE, CA - El Dorado Arts Council (EDAC) announced today that Kim Wyatt, publisher of Bona Fide Books, was appointed to the nonprofit arts organization’s board of directors.

Opinion: Alone We Can Do So Little; Together We Can Do So Much

Helen Keller wrote those words many years ago yet they continue to be very relevant today. As I look forward to 2014 I also like to reflect on another one of my favorite quotes, this one from Ghandi, "you must be the change you wish to see in the world."

As a community that is in the midst of change, we can be reminded of these quotes as we move forward and live in a town we're both proud of, and a vibrant part of.

TahoeChamber offers Microsoft Office Classes

Ordinance Passed in City Council to Ban Single Plastic Bag Use

Today the South Lake Tahoe City Council voted to approve the ban on single use plastic grocery bags in the city limits, duplicating their 3-2 vote from the first reading of the ordinance on October 1, 2013.

Council members Hal Cole, Angela Swanson and Brooke Laine all voted in favor of the ban. Tom Davis and JoAnn Conner against.

Robert Krut’s “This Is the Ocean” is the recipient of the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually by local publisher Bona Fide Books in honor of the Lake Tahoe artist who died in 2009.

The University of Nevada, Reno is set to hold the 57th Lake Tahoe Music Camp July 21-27 at the Nevada State 4-H Camp. Each year, nearly 200 students in grades 8 through 12 participate in a week of music activities, rehearsals, team building exercises and recreation time, all on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe.

The camp is filled with jazz and classical music workshops, clinics, performances, mentoring and instruction with award-winning University faculty, guest conductors, professional Chamber singers and jazz musicians and more.

Douglas County looks at new environmental plan for Lake Tahoe

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners will consider approval of a new area plan for Lake Tahoe’s South Shore on Thursday, June 2. The Douglas County Area Plan is the first to be proposed since the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency adopted the Regional Plan Update in December 2012.

San Diego State students forego traditional spring break to serve South Lake Tahoe

Fifteen students from San Diego State University will forego the typical spring break of beaches and relaxation to teach thousands of children in a small mountain community how to save energy and save the environment.

Members of the student organization CALPIRG Energy Service Corps will travel to South Lake Tahoe, Calif., from March 31 through April 5 to spread the word on energy savings.

Chamber kicks off new Tech Tuesday Workshop series

High school writing winners selected by Sierra Nevada College Winners to read alongside award-winning poets, novelists

Sierra Nevada College professors and editors evaluated over 500 submissions to choose the top winners for the 2012 High School Writing Contest, a national competition that produced exceptional stories, poems and creative nonfiction from high school juniors and seniors.
“The level of talent was extraordinary, making it tough for the judges,” said June Saraceno, English Department chair at Sierra Nevada College, a four-year private college in Incline Village, Nev.

On Dec. 13, TahoeChamber held a ribbon cutting and book signing at The Center for Higher Learning for longtime South Shore Lake Tahoe therapist Ray Goodenough.

Book signing and ribbon cutting celebrating 'Parallel Journeys'

All are invited to a ribbon cutting and book signing to celebrate the centers years of success and community service, and a newly published book. Ray Goodenough and his daughter Kathy Rem recently co-authored a book entitled “Parallel Journeys.”

After 33 years of separation, the two were reunited and in this book they compare stories and realize what an incredible parallel journey they have undergone.

The Tahoe Transportation District will host its second public workshop to discuss the US 50, Lake Tahoe South Shore Community Revitalization project, Wednesday, November 7, at Embassy Suites from 1-3 p.m.

The Lake Tahoe workshop will provide background on the project, outline goals and solicit input from individuals throughout the community. The open house format allows for members of the community to participant in the workshop anytime between workshop hours.
