The University of California will host a two-part workshop series on succession planning to help forest landowners learn simple techniques to pass their land and its legacy on to the next generation. The first workshop is being offered at 7 locations throughout California. In the central Sierra Nevada, workshops will be held in Auburn on Oct. 30, Jackson on Nov. 13, and Sacramento on Nov. 15. All workshops will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

Training for a Lake Tahoe Master Gardener program will begin this September in South Lake Tahoe.
The program is a partnership between the University of California Cooperative Extension Central Sierra and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.
Participants who complete the 50-hour training course will be certified Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners who then can provide the community with research-based information about home horticulture and gardening.

On Monday August 13, 2012 at the Valhalla Boathouse Theatre in South Lake Tahoe, Jesse Kalin will take center stage performing his original music in an intimate concert setting. With over 20 original songs written, Jesse will share material that has not been heard before.

Every summer writers of all stripes — poets, novelists, screenwriters and writers of memoirs, histories, essays and short stories — descend on Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe for a week of intensive literary activity. The valley buzzes with metaphors flying and manuscripts flapping, as over 250 writers, editors and publishers convene in two separate week-long workshops in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir and screenwriting.

The 43rd annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers will convene again this summer with acclaimed workshops in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction and Screenwriting. As part of the workshop, the Squaw Valley Community of Writers will be hosting an extraordinary evening of poetry readings on Thursday, June 28, at 8 p.m. in The Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley.

As part of the evening of poetry, Kazim Ali, Robert Hass, Sharon Olds, Claudia Rankine and C.D. Wright will read from their published and unpublished work, including poems written in Squaw Valley just days before.

Enjoy some tasty BBQ dinner in good company and learn more about how to protect our Tahoe watershed! Guest expert Wendy West of UC-Cooperative Extension will be on hand, talking about how to identify, avoid and manage some of Tahoe's Most unWanted--invasive weeds. The Green Thumb Gardening workshops and take place most Wednesdays, from 5:30-6:45pm through August.

In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. Following her performance at UNR on March 1, scholar, teacher, and artist Joanna Frueh will conduct a workshop at Sierra Nevada College, 999 Tahoe Blvd., on Friday, March 2 from 1 -3:30pm in David Hall, 3rd floor. The workshop is limited to 25 people. There is a $10 workshop fee that includes a copy of the book The Glamour of Being Real. The book and workshops focus participants on being true to themselves through practices of self-transformation and conscious self-creation.

She struggled to decipher the words on the document but understood its significance — the number, 5,000 Kenyan shillings, would be paid to her to start her own small business baking and selling chapati to support her family.

In honor of National Safety Awareness Week, Squaw Valley is hosting a full calendar of events and activities this week promoting safety both on and off the mountain. Celebrated across the country now through Jan. 22, Safety Week is part of the National Ski Area Association’s safety-awareness program.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will host two public workshops to help orient customers to the reorganization of TRPA’s Code of Ordinances, which will go into effect on March 1, 2012.

From behind the island in a large stone and brick kitchen, Diane Weidinger goes about her business, carefully filling small tins with her spice blends to be shipped to customers near and far. Weidinger is filling an order including blends of Egyptian, Scandinavian and Moroccan spices and more for a customer who wants to highlight workplace diversity.

Community educators are joining forces to bring another 21st Century Education Speakers Series to the Lake Tahoe Basin. This year’s series kicks-off with author Bernie Trilling on Tuesday, November 8th from 6:30 – 9:00 pm at Sierra Nevada College in the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.
