Chain controls go up on roads around Lake Tahoe

9:45 p.m. update Sunday: Chains are now mandatory on all vehicles except 4-Wheel drive with snow tires on US 50 over Echo and Spooner Summits, the Mt. Rose Hwy, SR267 and Donner Summit on I-80. At this time there are no controls over Kingsbury Grade.

Snow is starting to stick on roads around Lake Tahoe, a sight for sore eyes who have been waiting for the return of the ski season.

As of 7:00 p.m. Saturday, chain controls are up on all mountain passes:

Highway 50 - Chain Control level R-2 from Twin Bridges to Meyers. Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels.

Highway 89 - Chains required on all vehicles except 4-Wheel drive with snow tires on CA-89 from mile post 17.1 in El Dorado County to mile post 21.0 in El Dorado County in California. Chains or snow tires required on CA-89 from mile post 21.0 in El Dorado County to mile post 0.5 in Nevada County in California. Over Luther Pass, chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel / all wheel drive vehicles with snow treaded tires on all wheels. Tahoe City to Truckee - Chains, traction devices or snow tires are required on the drive axle of all vehicles except four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles.

SR-207/Kingsbury Grade - Chains required on all vehicles except 4-Wheel Drive with snow tires from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 5.0 in Douglas County in Nevada.

SR-28 - Chains required on all vehicles except 4-Wheel Drive with snow tires on SR-28 from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 2.8 in Carson City County in Nevada.

SR 431, the Mt. Rose Hwy - There is a conditions related event (Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires) from mile post 0.2 in Washoe County to mile post 19.0 in Washoe County in Nevada.

I-80 -Chains Required on all vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with snow tires from mile post 69.2 in Placer County to mile post 9.1 in Nevada County in California.

I-580 - High wind warning - Vehicles over 9 Feet high Are Prohibited from mile post 6.5 in Washoe County to mile post 15.0 in Washoe County in Nevada.
