JT Chevallier named new town manager for Genoa

A man with strong Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada ties has been named the new town manager for Genoa, Nevada.

On January 25, the Genoa Town Board voted unanimously to extend an offer to JT Chevallier to take the helm of the historic town just over the mountain from South Lake Tahoe.

“We had a difficult decision to make with some highly qualified candidates,” said Chairman to the Board Steven Shively. “Overall we are excited to bring JT on board and to set future goals and strategies for the Town of Genoa."

Column: Simple Ways to Live Happily

I was recently watching the movie Castaway. This time, as I watched, I thought about how it was filmed. As the movie begins, Tom Hanks’ character has a bit of a belly. As the story progresses he becomes thinner and more muscular. I assume the effect was created by filming in reverse; he began as thin and muscular and gained the weight afterward. I began thinking about how easily we can change when we put our minds to it.

Suspect in all four Northern Nevada murders in custody

UPDATE 1/23/19 - The suspect in the quadruple murder in Northern Nevada was in the country illegally from El Salvador when he was arrested on January 19, 2019. Tips received by law enforcement led them to Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, and as they built a murder case they started to tail him. Immigration officials were unaware of Martinez-Guzman until those tips came in.

Officials did not want to lose the suspect and arrested him on immigration charges as the investigation continued and the murder case developed.

Schools on the South Shore open; Douglas County on 90 minute delay

All schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (South Lake Tahoe) will be open on Wednesday, January 16 but there are some program cancellations - All after[school AAA programs are cancelled, STHS cross country practice going to Kirkwood cancelled as are the high school alpine practices at Sierra-at-Tahoe.

Up at the North Shore, Truckee Tahoe School District schools are closed. All school activities are cancelled unless notified otherwise.

Second homicide in Douglas County possibly related to James Road murder

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the 900 block of Dresslerville Road in Gardnerville on the report of a deceased person at approximately 1:20 p.m.

According to County officials, the DCSO initial investigation has resulted in this incident being classified as a homicide and belief this case is related to the murder a few days ago of a Gardnerville woman on nearby James Road.

New shoreline applications now available including registration of existing buoys

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) today released a series of updated permit applications for shorezone projects and activities under the recently-adopted Shoreline Plan that is taking effect this year.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SnowGlobe 2018 is in the books, and according to law enforcement and other safety personnel as well as festival organizers, it was the most successful one yet.

There were fewer arrests and citations, fewer medical issues and an increase in community collaboration to help the event be both successful and less of a burden to the neighboring residents who have expressed concern over noise from the bass-centric sounds of the electronic music performers on the outdoor stages.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office plans strong presence in Stateline on New Year's Eve

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Monday, December 31, 2018.

Due to the high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during this event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive. In past years, the road has closed anywhere from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

DEA arrests two South Lake Tahoe residents on drug charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Federal agents were in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday to arrest two local men after a three-year-long investigation into their illegal drug activities.

On December 18, 2018, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) with assistance from the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Task Force (TRIDENT), South Lake Tahoe Police Department and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office served a federal search warrant at a home on the 2300 block of Tahoe Vista Drive.

Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club helping out Sierra House families

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One hundred percent of the operations of Sierra House Elementary have now moved over to the Al Tahoe school site (where the Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club is also housed) until possibly mid-February. Due to the size a split schedule is in place to accommodate the students, with some students only attending in the morning, others only in the afternoon.

The Boys and Girls Club (Club) is assisting parents with that split schedule and in partnership with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will be offering free programs and activities during the school day.

Heavenly Village Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the Heavenly Village for the first time ever on Friday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. The Heavenly Village is located in South Lake Tahoe at 1001 Heavenly Village Way. Ceremony includes carolers, music and special visit by Santa Claus, all until 9:00 p.m.

Home for the holidays: Know the signs and keep older adults safe

Many people do not get to see their loved ones as often as they would like. The holidays offer an opportunity to not only reconnect with and visit parents, grandparents and other loved ones, but to ensure that they are staying safe.

“If you are visiting your loved one and become concerned about their wellbeing, particularly if you suspect they may be a victim of neglect, self-neglect or abuse, please reach out for assistance,” said Laura Walny, Manager with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency.

Heavenly and Northstar celebrate opening day in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain kicked off it’s opening day Friday with the Gondola and Tamarack Express spinning at 9:00 a.m. Skiers and riders enjoyed their first taste of the slopes on California Trail and Tamarack Return.

There was a pre-opening celebration at the base of the Gondola in South Lake Tahoe at 8:00 a.m. Those early risers enjoy music by a DJ, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to stay toasty. The rest of the day had live music, ski and snowboard gear giveaways, group photos and food.

60-foot South Lake Tahoe community tree cut for Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rockefeller Center in New York City has a Christmas tree as a backdrop for all holiday activities in the Big City since 1933, and now South Lake Tahoe is starting what hopes to be an annual tradition. Standing at 60-feet, the local version isn't quite as big as their neighbor on the East Coast (which runs 60-100 feet and can weigh close to 30,000 pounds), but it serve as a place to warm hearts and be a center of holiday photos and fun.

Overwhelming support of South Shore Community Revitalization Project at TRPA meeting

STATELINE, Nev. - A standing room only crowd was in the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board room on October 25, 2018 for an updated presentation, and plans for the next steps, of the U.S. 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, commonly known as the Loop Road. It reroutes Highway 50 from its current location in front of Heavenly Village and the casinos to behind Raley's, the Village Center and Harrahs Tahoe.

Goodies and treats for ghouls and goblins of all ages

Kids of all ages will be donning their Halloween best on Wednesday as they hit the streets of South Lake Tahoe seeking their bag full of treats.

Besides the door-to-door trick or treaters, two popular parties for kids will also be hopping.

Treat Street, sponsored by KRLT 93.9 FM and KOWL 1490 AM, returns to Lake Tahoe Community College on October 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Participants will go from room to room for an indoor treating experience.

Election season can be an exciting time of year with anticipation of the possibilities, but this year in South Lake Tahoe election season is full of negativity that has pitted neighbor against neighbor. One year ago I wrote an editorial "Use the election to create a community of collaboration and teamwork," and today I urge continuance of community, collaboration and teamwork.

Fire Weather Watch and Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are concerned with the forecast of gusty winds and low humidity in the Lake Tahoe area on Sunday, prompting the issuance of both a Lake Wind Advisory and Fire Weather Watch for much of the day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and a Fire Weather Watch from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Lake Tahoe grading season coming to a close

Public input sought for BIjou Community Park master plan

The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Commissioners and City staff will host a public workshop at Bijou Community Park on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to obtain feedback from community members on opportunities to expand and create access to outdoor recreation.

The workshop is going to be "fun and interactive," according to organizers and will also include refreshments.

Bicycle and pedestrian safety focus of new CHP campaign

The safety of pedestrians and bicyclists is the focus of a federal grant to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for the coming year.

The California Pedestrian and Bicyclist Enforcement and Education Project (CPBEEP) grant runs from October 1, 2018, through September 30, 2019. During this year-long statewide campaign, CHP officers will conduct enhanced enforcement activities and public education campaigns.

Eveyone a winner as W.E. C.A.R.E Sports visits South Lake Tahoe schools

W.E. C.A.R.E. Sports has spent the week in South Lake Tahoe, visiting each elementary school thanks to a grant awarded by the Tahoe Women's Community Fund to bring the program to Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
