The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund announced Thursday the launch of the Lake Tahoe License Plate ‘Plate Spotter’ program to reward owners of Lake Tahoe license plates with free lift tickets during the 2013 Winter season. Tahoe plates spotted by official “spotters” and the general public will be entered to win free lift tickets every week until March 20, 2013. The program is designed to raise awareness of Lake Tahoe license plates, and to reward and encourage renewals and new Tahoe license plate purchases.

KLS Capital Partners, the owners of ski resorts Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, has entered into a purchase agreement with Intrawest to acquire 24 percent of shares in Whistler Blackcomb Holdings Inc.
The deal is for $115,929,375, according to UnofficialNetworks.com. As a result of the sale Whistler Blackcomb Holdings CEO, Bill Jensen, has tendered his resignation as well as directors Wes Edens and Jonathan Ashley.

The environmental non-profit Tahoe Fund presented a $10,000 check today to the Nevada interagency team responsible for implementing thestate’s highest priority Lake Tahoe restoration project, the Third Creek and Incline Creek watershed project. The grant finances a pedestrian bridge over Incline Creek to provide a recreational amenity in the heart of Incline Village and support the Environmental Improvement Program to improve lake clarity and recreational opportunities in the Tahoe Basin.

The Tahoe Prosperity Center has announced the appointment of Mone´K. Haen to the new position of CEO. The Tahoe Prosperity Center was formed in response to the Lake Tahoe Basin Prosperity Plan developed in 2010 and is the result of an unprecedented coalition of government, private, and philanthropic stakeholders in the Tahoe Basin. The naming of a CEO is a major step in the TPC's mission to promote regional sustainability through economic vitality, environmental stewardship and healthy communities in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The need for more public-private partnerships to complete environmental projects at Lake Tahoe is the focus of the 16th annual Lake Tahoe Summit, which will be held this Monday, August 13 at the Edgewood Tahoe resort at Stateline, Nev. The free event will be held 9 a.m. to noon and is open to the public.

The Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee announced additional members of its Board of Directors Wednesday after convening its inaugural meeting in Olympic Valley, Calif. last week. Members of the board unanimously supported that the organization turn its attention to the next available (when the United States Olympics Committee decides to bid) Winter Olympic games while simultaneously focusing its efforts on attracting world class sporting events to the region in preparation for a potential bid.

The U.S. tart cherry crop is drastically reduced, in a year when demand for tart cherries has never been higher. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cherry Crop Report, released late last month, United States tart cherry production is forecast at 73.1 million pounds, down 68 percent from the 2011 production.

Fifty-two years after the Olympic flame was first ignited in the Tahoe region, California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom and Nevada Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki announced the formation of the Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee (LTWGEC) today, a new joint California Nevada initiative, building on the existing efforts, dedicated to developing an Olympic Bid for the 2022 Winter Games.

The last time Lake Tahoe hosted the Winter Olympics, John F. Kennedy was still a U.S. senator, Muhammad Ali was still Cassius Clay and Mike Eruzione was a 5-year-old.
The year was 1960, and the Squaw Valley Games boasted a grand total of 17 events.
Fast forward more than half a century and Lake Tahoe again wants to host the Olympics. By 2022, the year they're shooting for, the Winter Games will have more than 90 events.

The non-profit Tahoe Fund is working with public and nonprofit agencies basinwide to develop its funding priorities for the next year. The Fund has a 10-year goal of raising and distributing $50 million to restore andenhance the Lake, including work on Nevada and California bike paths, hiking trails, restoration projects, interpretive programs, public parks and related projects. Founded in 2010, the Tahoe Fund raises private money to leverage the limited public funding available for such efforts.
