SnowGlobe teams up with Waste-Free Earth, Sugar Pine Foundation and others for sustainable festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many see the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe differently - some as a concert, others as noise. What many don't know is the sustainable platform organizers have established over the years.

Each year SnowGlobe and their partners Waste-Free Earth, Chris's Cleaning, Full Circle Compost and South Tahoe Refuse work together on reducing and reusing the waste created at the festival, and with the Sugarpine Foundation to plant trees for future forests.

Christmas "miracle" helps displaced South Lake Tahoe family

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When Laura Alvarez De Ruiz, her husband and three children found themselves homeless just a week before Christmas their future was uncertain.

De Ruiz and her family filled one of six apartments at 3546 Spruce Avenue until December 17. That was when they had to vacate their home after the landlord failed to provide safe housing for residents and the City of South Lake Tahoe shut it down.

Community gives families displaced from South Lake Tahoe apartments some holiday cheer but still in need of permanent housing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On December 12 six South Lake Tahoe families learned the apartment building they called home was no longer habitable and they had to vacate by December 17.

As the deadline loomed panic set in for the residents of 3546 Spruce Avenue, they tried to find new housing in a city where available rentals are almost non-existent, especially for those of a lower income level without financial means to pay higher rent and deposits.

Carson City woman dies in Douglas County collision

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Carson City woman died after being struck by a SUV on US-395 early Saturday morning.

At approximately 6:20 a.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in the area of Cradebaugh Bridge and Stephanie Way in Douglas County.

Home Ranch for the Holidays at Dangberg Historic Park

Home Ranch for the Holidays, a celebration of the season that includes a vintage toy exhibit, music and treats, returns to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday-Sunday, December 15-16 from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

The exhibit includes toys from the 1870s through the 1890s that were played with by Fred Dangberg and his siblings, as well as numerous toys enjoyed by Fred’s five children and a grandson from 1901 through the 1940s.

Tahoe Warm Room finds new location - opens December 12

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced the opening of their Warm Room for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, December 12. This year they will be located inside the old Emerald Bay Dentistry office at 1201 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe.

The Warm Room will operate nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. through April 2019.

For the fourth year, the Warm Room will provide overnight refuge from the elements in a safe and warm environment for approximately twenty-five adult men and women who are experiencing homelessness during winter months.

Christmas gifts for young Camp Fire victims being collected at Liberty Utilities

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the heels of their successful supply drive for the victims of the recent Camp Fire in Paradise, Liberty Utilities is now collecting new toys and new clothing for the youngest of the displaced residents.

The local power company is collecting new and unwrapped clothes and toys for kids ages 0-17 Monday through Thursday, December 3-6 at both of their Lake Tahoe offices.

All collected gifts will be delivered to children in the Paradise area on Friday, December 7, just in time for the holidays.

5th annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar in South Lake Tahoe

The fifth annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar will be held at The Landing on December 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on December 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Local entrepreneurs, artisans and the community are being connected to support the concept of shopping locally while making change globally. A portion of proceeds from the event will be donated to Zawadisha, a social enterprise founded in Lake Tahoe by Jen Gurecki and Julie Lowe. Zawadisha will invest the funds from the event into their leadership and business training program for rural Kenyan women.

South Lake Tahoe youth fundraising for dogs and cats

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four local young ladies are continuing to help the South Lake Tahoe community with their fundraising efforts to help different needs on the South Shore.

For the 2018 Christmas season Maiella and Milan Riva, Lily Demus and Simone Sitchon will be collecting items and money to help both Lake Tahoe Humane Society and El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Last year the four girls collected clothing and toys for local foster youth and in 2016 they collected gloves, hats, socks, coats, and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room.

Missing Placerville boy spotted in South Lake Tahoe

A 13-year-old boy missing from the Placerville area was spotted near Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, but by the time law enforcement he had left the area.

Patrick Siebenthaler ran away after school on September 24,. 2018 He has done that before and normally returned after a day or two, but this time he hasn't been seen or heard from in over five weeks. Patrick fled without having any extra clothing, money or supplies to utilize as one may do when it's planned.

Laser Show and full slate of events over Labor Day Weekend in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Labor Day officially marks the end of the summer season in Lake Tahoe and weekend-long celebrations are spread throughout the South Shore September 1-3, 2018.

Labor Day Lasers at Lakeview return to Lakeview Commons on Sunday, September 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Besides a laser show that uses the tall pines as a backdrop there will be food trucks, a dozen local vendors where people can purchase handcrafted goods and clothing, and a wine and beer garden.

South Tahoe Now will be publishing a series over the next few weeks, The Keepers of Tahoe History. We will be highlighting groups, locations and events around Lake Tahoe that are preserving the historic past of the area.

South Lake Tahoe Police busy with Phish concert goers and trash

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) had their hands full on Tuesday before, during and after the first of two Phish concerts at the outdoor arena at Harveys Lake Tahoe.

Trash including empty alcohol bottles and beer boxes littered much of the open space surrounding Stateline and Cedar Avenues where hundreds of fans lined the streets. In addition to the trash, pop-up tents with vendors starting selling clothing and other items illegally.

The owner of the corner property, chateau at the Village, sent out crews to help clean, according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

Keep Tahoe Red. White and Blue Beach Cleanup

About the Event

After Tahoe's celebrated July Fourth festivities, our beaches are thrashed with trash, which can hurt wildlife and lake clarity. Each year, hundreds of Tahoe residents and visitors turn out for our largest cleanup of the year to remove litter from our beaches. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by joining a beach cleanup site!

We will provide cleanup materials, refreshments and raffle prizes.

Be sure to bring:
Reusable water bottle, sunscreen, cleanup gloves (if you have them), hat, sunglasses and wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as any snacks that you would like.

Volunteers collect 2,465 pounds of litter at “Spring Cleanup” event

On Saturday May 12th, 294 volunteers scoured South Tahoe neighborhoods to help clean up litter and kick off the summer with a sparkling clean town. The groups of volunteers covered nineteen different locations and gathered an estimated 2,465 pounds of trash and debris from our environment.

Volunteers took to the streets along Lake Tahoe Blvd and around Stateline, Ski Run, Bijou, Al Tahoe, Rufus Allen, Tahoe Sierra/Sierra Tract, Tahoe Island, Gardner Mountain, and the “Y”. Some neighborhoods had multiple groups fanning out to cover more ground.

Grant awardees to be celebrated at Tahoe Women's Community Fund Gala

The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has invited the community to join them at their annual Grants Gala to celebrate the 2018 grant recipients as $68,000 is distributed to 13 non-profit organizations in the South Shore community.

The evening will also feature short presentations from the 2017 grantees on how they spent the collective funding this past year.

Volunteers needed for Grover Hot Springs Earth Day Work Day

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. - The Alpine Watershed Group will be hosting an Earth Day Work Day on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Grover Hot Springs State Park. This event allows for the completion of important restoration work to a beautiful, and important alpine meadow.

Volunteers are needed to help with invasive weed removal, fence rebuilding and extension, and state park maintenance. All are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary. Participants will gather at Grover Hot Springs at 8:30 a.m. for registration and introductions.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces winners of $68,000 in grants

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) has announced the non-profit organizations on the South Shore who have been selected to receive grants in the amount of $68,000.

During their 2018 grant cycle, over 25 organizations applied for grants and 13 of them are being supported by TWCF and will be honored during their Grants Gala
on Wednesday, May 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe.

Two Reno residents have been arrested on multiple charges, and a warrant will be issued for a third after the Gardnerville Walmart shoplifting incident turned into a lot more.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on February 17, 2018, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the Walmart after three people were seen leaving the store with cameras and camera equipment inside a gray plastic tote. They were seen leaving in a gray KIA with Nevada plates driven by a female.

Dog flu spreading through California and Northern Nevada

Yes, dogs can get the flu.

With dozens of reported cases of dogs with influenza throughout Northern California over the last few weeks, it appears two strains of the nasty bug may be getting closer to Lake Tahoe.

One Reno veterinarian says even though they've had just 10 confirmed cases of dog flu in Washoe County, he believes there has likely been 100 cases. Some dog owners don't get their dogs tested for flu due to costs, but Dr. Rick Furman said many of the sick dogs seen in his office have they symptoms.
