Jury Duty scam targeting Douglas County Residents

A person, or persons, impersonating deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, are targeting local residents in what has become a common phone scam.

The scammers call the resident and inform them that they failed to show up for jury duty, and has an active warrant. The impersonator even states dates of notices and case numbers.

The impersonator instructs the residents to wire money or to purchase a pre-paid credit card and they will call back to obtain the credit card numbers.

One stabbed, one arrested for attempted murder after fight in Gardnerville liquor store

MINDEN, NEVADA – Two men were involved in a fight at the Ranchos Liquor Store in Gardnerville Friday night, resulting in one transported by air ambulance to Reno, the other arrested and jailed on multiple charges.

At 5:44 p.m., deputies from Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded along with paramedics and found an unidentified 50-year-old man suffering from a knife wound to the chest. He was transported to Renown Medical Center.

Squirrel hunter accidentally shoots and kills wife in El Dorado County

A Sacramento man out squirrel hunting with his wife on Monday accidentally shot and killed her.

Lee Lao called 911 about 5:15 p.m. to report that he shot his wife, Mee Vang, while squirrel hunting in the 10500 block of Wentworth Springs Road in Stumpy Meadows, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies and emergency personnel arrived and Lao led them to Vang’s location where it was confirmed she had succumbed to her injuries.

Lao was detained and has been cooperating in the investigation. He was released without criminal charges, at this time.

Washoe County Deputy credited for saving life of suicidal inmate

When an inmate attempted to take his life earlier this year by throwing himself over a balcony with a makeshift rope around his neck, Detention Facility Deputy Michel Eubanks literally flew to the rescue, bounding up the stairs to make the rescue with the help of three inmate work crew members.

Avoid the 6 anti-DUI campaign nets 55 offenders over holiday weekend

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County police, deputies and CHP officers from the west and east slopes of the county joined together over the holiday weekend to participate in "Avoid the 6," a zero tolerance for impaired driving campaign. Their efforts netted 55 offenders for the deadly drime.

There were roving DUI saturation patrols to find the impaired drivers.

Man dies while scuba diving in Glenbrook Bay as he explored SS Tahoe

A 63-year-old man diving in Lake Tahoe near Glenbrook Bay died on Monday, September 5.

Marine Patrols from Douglas County Sheriff, Washoe County Sheriff and El Dorado County Sheriff, along with Tahoe Douglas Fire all responded to the distress call of a scuba diver in trouble just after 10:00 a.m.

Anniversary of 2011 IHOP shooting remembered with run

Runners and walkers gathered at IHOP in Carson City early Tuesday morning to commemorate the victims of the IHOP mass shooting that happened five years ago today in Carson City.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which a mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons were injured.

Body of missing Gardnerville woman found near old Kingsbury Grade

The body of a missing Gardnerville woman was found by searchers on Sunday near old Kingsbury Grade. At 10:00 a.m. a bicyclist on the road spotted her abandoned pickup truck with the passenger side door open and called authorities.

Randi Maclean, 51, was found down a steep canyon after Douglas County Sheriff's Office Deputies and Search and Rescue team members combed Daggett Creek and the surrounding area for several hours. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol that was near the area at the time of the initial call joined in the search but was unable to locate Maclean.

Pair facing charges including counterfeiting and forgery

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies responded to the call of a disabled vehicle and came away with the arrest of two women on several charges stemming from what was found in that car.

On August 17, 2016, at approximately 6:45 a.m., the deputies went to the car which was in the roadway of Strolling Hills Road at the entrance to Safeway in Cameron Park. Once there they contacted two women, Tanya Starks, 35, and Kimberly Higgins, 47.

"Shooting Fire" in Carson City burns 252 acres, now 80% contained

UPDATE 11AM 8/15: The Shooting Fire is now 80 percent contained and remains non-threatening to structures with a total of 252 acres burned, SFIDC spokeswoman Shannon Brophy said.

UPDATE 8PM: The Shooting Fire is 40 percent contained with eyes on all fire lines from multiple fire agencies, said Carson City Fire Department spokeswoman Stacey Belt. Mapping has the fire size to be between 200 to 300 acres, she said. Several fire crews will remain on scene to close the containment gap.

Small fires started this summer at transient camps around South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and other area fire departments have responded to several illegal cooking fires in homeless encampments this summer, some which have spread to burn up to several hundred feet.

The cause of the July 19 fires behind the power station by the Heavenly Gondola and in the Trout Creek area behind Ross are still under investigation, but sources have said they were both most likely started by illegal campfires. Fire crews also responded to transient camp fires on July 27 and August 8 as well as several illegal cooking fires.

Accident and fire keeping roads into South Lake Tahoe busy with backed up traffic

A fire just off of Cameron Park Drive is causing backups on Highway 50 in the eastbound lanes. So far, what we know is that several power poles in the Burdock Road area are on fire. El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies have blocked off traffic on Cameron Park Drive heading south to Burdock.

Highway 50 has resulting traffic, my according to CHP that is a result of people watching the flames and smoke which can be seen from the road.

Placer County SAR volunteer shot while looking for missing hiker

A Placer County Search and Rescue volunteer was shot in the hip on Tuesday evening while out with a team searching for a 75-year-old missing hiker.

Steven Wolf was part of a three-person team searching between Brown and Fish Creek for the hiker who was last seen near the town of Washington on the South Yuba River. The other two members of Wolf's team found cover and radioed for help.

Smiths' employees deliver "goody bags" to Douglas County Sheriff's deputies

One hundred goody bags full of roasted coffee beans from Blind Dog Coffee as well as food treats were delivered to deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as a token of appreciation from employees of Smith's grocery store in Gardnervile.

Twelve employees and their families delivered the bags to the deputy's swing shift briefing on August 10. They told the men and women of DCSO they wanted to show their concern for their safety and that they appreciate the job that they do protecting the community and keeping families safe.

Investigation into fatal fire in Incline Village

One person died early Sunday morning as fire swept through their Incline Village home on Tomahawk Trail, north of SR28.

At 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 7, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and fire personnel were dispatched to a structure fire. Upon arrival they found the condominium fully engulfed in flames.

After several hours of firefighting efforts, crews were able to enter the structure and discover a subject deceased in the home.

Pair arrested at Ritz-Carlton at Northstar after found making fake credit cards

The Placer County Sheriff's office arrested an out-of-state couple on July 28 and July 29 on several charges after they stayed at the Ritz-Carlton at Northstarusing fake credit cards which they manufactured in their room.

Seven jailed in door-to-door care packages for soldiers cash scam

Seven out-of-state men were arrested Saturday on felony fraud and other charges after officers uncovered a scam where the suspects allegedly went door-to-door asking for money donations they said would be used to assemble care packages sent to U.S. soldiers overseas, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Officers began investigating the men after dispatch received several calls from Carson City residents who said they were asked for money from one of the men and the pitch that was being used didn’t appear to be legitimate, according to the arrest report.

12:15 p.m. - Carrying a loaded gun - Lake Tahoe Blvd - 33-YEAR-OLD MANE ARRESTED AFTER AN UNREGISTERED FIREARM WAS LOCATED INSIDE OF AN UNSECURED HARD SADDLE BAG OF A MOTORCYCLE.

Bandaged Bandit arrested after another bank robbery

A 22-year-old El Dorado Hills man is behind bars on suspicion of robbing several area banks between June 29 and July 25 from Stateline to Folsom with his face covered in bandages, earning him the nickname, the Bandaged Bandit.

On July 25 at 2:35 p.m., the US Bank on White Rock Road in El Dorado Hills was robbed by a suspect who fled into a wooded area southeast of the bank. Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol officers and helicopter started searching the area.

Woman airlifted to Reno after Lake Tahoe boating accident

Updated Story 7/25/16:

A 22-year-old woman from Oregon is in serious condition at Renown Medical Center in Reno after having her leg caught in the propeller of a boat on Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon. The boat with twin propellers had been pulling her on an innertube, but upon re-entering the boat the unidentified woman's legs were caught in the props.

Douglas County man returns home to be DCSO deputy

Cole Sonneman, a Carson Valley native, was sworn in on July 18 as the newest deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Sonnemann was raised in the Carson Valley and spent several years in the DCSO Explorer Program as a teenager with Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Griffith. Sonneman said he remembers attending DARE lessons taught by Griffith while attending Gardnerville Elementary School.

Three local men arrested in connection with theft of 1,100 Heavenly ski vouchers

An investigation into the March 10 theft of $116,520 worth of Heavenly Valley ski pass vouchers has led to the arrest of three men on suspicion of conspiracy, felony embezzlement, theft and possession of stolen property.

On July 15 and 16, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office took into custody Tim Jacobsen, 21, of Minden, Nev., Mark Graham, 20 of Gardnerville, Nev., and Angelo Bozin, 25 of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Bail has been set on each man at $10,000.00.

Another South Lake Tahoe business to honor law enforcement August 1

In the spirit of community, the idea of honoring law enforcement in South Lake Tahoe on August 1 is growing. Jen Bloch, owner of Tahoe Tot Spot, heard what South Lake Tahoe restaurateur Ted Kennedy was doing to honor the men, and women, in blue, and wanted to join in.

Tahoe Tot Spot will be offering free admission for children of law enforcement officers and deputies that day.

Local restaurateur offers free meals to law enforcement personnel and families August 1

Ted Kennedy continues to show his appreciation for local heroes through his South Lake Tahoe restaurants.

Kennedy, who on the ownership team of Base Camp Pizza, California Burger, Azul Latin Kitchen and now, the Lakeside Beach House, shows gratitude on a weekly basis. Those in uniform and teachers get a free meal at any of his four restaurants (police officers, sheriff's deputies, fire personnel, nurses and those on active duty).

"This is to thank them, and show that we appreciate their service," said Kennedy. "They are our local heroes."

Placer County inmate escapes; Deputies find her "sunbathing" in river

A female inmate from Placer County enjoyed only about 50 minutes of freedom on Friday after she escaped a road work crew.

Woman drowns while rafting on American River near Kyburz

A San Francisco woman died on the South Fork of the American River near Kyburz while rafting on Saturday, July 9.

Elaine Yi Mau, 32, was camping at the China Flat Campground with friends when they took rafts into the nearby river. At 4:09 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was told of a rafting accident involving Mau. She had been on a raft with someone who fell off, and when he surfaced, Mau was gone.

Importance of understanding dangers of cold water shock

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

"The sudden lowering of skin temperature on immersion in cold water represents one of the most profound stimuli that the body can encounter." Golden and Tipton in Essentials of Sea Survival

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is increasing their educational campaign for boaters and swimmers to understand the dangers of cold water at Lake Tahoe.

Douglas County inmate attempts suicide with sheet

An unidentified inmate at the Douglas County Jail in Minden attempted suicide over the weekend by tying a sheet around his neck.

On July 1 at about 2:45 p.m., paramedics were summoned to the jail for an unconscious male. The 49-year-old male was not breathing. Deputies began CPR while the fire department was responding.

The inmate was transported to a local hospital. He has since returned to custody at the DCSO jail. The inmate was in custody for a probation violation originally related to a DUI 3rd offense.

Douglas County students participate in gang resistance training program

Forty soon-to-be eighth grade students from Pau-Wa-Lu and Carson Valley middle schools just wrapped up a two-week summer program with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO). The annual G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program has lessons from Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Wiggins which wrapped up with a four-day adventure event at Lake Tahoe.

Six-hour stand off ends at Motel 6 in South Lake Tahoe

An almost six-hour long standoff in the parking lot of the South Lake Tahoe Motel 6 parking lot has ended, with no suspect in custody, though a warrant has been issued for 31-year-old Sean Wanamaker.

South Lake Tahoe Police officers were called to the area Saturday afternoon after a person said a man got into an argument with someone in the parking lot, and that he brandished a handgun, then went into a trailer parked at the motel.

El Dorado Hills bank robber appears to be same as South Shore suspect

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) is working on the strong possibility that a man who robbed the Chase Bank in El Dorado Hills on Friday is the same man who robbed the US Bank on Kingsbury Grade on Wednesday. Lt. Jim Byers of EDSO told South Tahoe Now that the moment the photo of the suspect came out, deputies in South Lake Tahoe saw the resemblance and notified him.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed Friday; second South Shore bank robbery in three days

8:30 p.m. update 7/1/16: The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Evans and a search warrant for his residence in the 3000 block of Riverside Avenue. Due to Evan’s past violent criminal history, the SWAT team was employed to make the arrest. Officers, assisted by the FBI, arrested Evans at his residence at 7:45 p.m. this evening.

Firefighters gain on Trailhead Fire: 50% contained, burns 5,444 acres

8:30 p.m. update 7/4/16: Firefighters working on the Trailhead Fire in El Dorado County gained a lot of ground Monday, getting a containment line around 50 percent of the fire. So far, 5,444 acres have burned.

Deaths in Lake Tahoe attributed to cold water shock, not hypothermia

"Swim Smart, Swim Safe: know the dangers of cold water" is the message coming from agencies responsible for boating and water safety on Lake Tahoe, especially after the recent deaths in the lake of two healthy men.

Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.

Sheriff investigating death of man whose body found near Barton

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office responded to a report of a possible dead person on June 25, 2016 at 4:21 p.m. in the 1200 block of Winnemucca Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased male in a moderate state of decomposition.

At this time, the case is being investigated as a suspicious death, and no identification or cause of death has been determined.

Man's body found in Lake Tahoe near watercraft

Three agencies are working to find out why a man died in Lake Tahoe this weekend.

On June 25, deputies El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to the call of an unresponsive man in the water east of Meeks Bay. There was an unoccupied jet ski nearby.

According to Bernadette Smith of Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the unidentified man was loaded onto the Placer county Marine 6 and transported to Cave Rock, CPR in progress during the ride, but without success. He was pronounced deceased.

Cameron Park man faces new allegations of child molestation

A 23-year-old Cameron Park man is behind bars again on felony child molestation charges.

Deputies from the El Dorado Sheriff's Office (EDS)) arrested Robert Lee Edmonds on June 15 after several minors were identified as his victims.

Woman sought by authorities on suspicion of multiple felonies

Authorities from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Reno Police Department are looking for a 21-year-old woman who is wanted on multiple felony charges.

Haley Douglas is actively being sought on charges on burglary, fraud, theft and uttering ba forged instrument. Law enforcement believes she is in the Carson Valley.

On June 13, DCSO deputies went to an address in the Gardnerville Ranchos and were told by a family member that she had left an hour prior and has not been seen since. There is no associated vehicle information.

Agencies to continue search for body of missing UNR paddleboarder

The search for Marc Ma, the 20-year-old University of Nevada Reno football player who went missing after a paddleboard outting on Lake Tahoe with teammates, will resume on Thursday, June 16.

The Tahoe Dive Team and volunteers from the Placer County Sheriff's Office will be joined by Kern County Sheriff's deputies and an out-of-state company to search for Ma who went missing on the afternoon of June 10 when winds came up and created dangerous conditions including 3- to 5-foot waves.

Gardnerville fire displaces residents, injures two

A three alarm fire at an apartment complex in Gardnerville injured two people and displaced the residents.

At 5:40 p.m., East Fork Fire Department and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the complex located at 1375 Lampe Lane and found the building fully engulfed. The called in several other fire safety agencies to assist including Tahoe Douglas, Carson City, Storey County, Reno, Truckee Meadows, Mono County and REMSA. 50 personnel responded along with 16 pieces of equipment.

El Dorado County man arrested on exploitation and assault charges

Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in Diamond Springs on Tuesday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m.

Upon arrival, they discovered that Luis Javier Calderon, 33, had taken a knife from the home's kitchen and went into a bedroom where a 14-year-old female relative was sleeping. Calderon held the knife to her neck and made her stand and remove all of her clothing, according to a EDSO press release.
