Prep roundup for Whittell and South Tahoe High Schools

The Whittell Warriors Varsity football team improved their record to 8-0 after a double overtime win over Mineral County on Friday night. The Warriors fell behind in the first quarter 22-8 and went into the locker room at half time trailing 44-22. At the end of regulation play the score was tied at 44 after Whittell came back with two touchdown passes by Colin Buchholtz late in the game. Max Primo's 6 yard rushing TD in overtime was followed by a pass by Buccholtz to Armando Rodgriquez for a touchdown put Whittell on the win column with a final score of 56-50.

South Tahoe High football team gets first win during homecoming celebrations

A pep rally and a parade through South Lake Tahoe started off the South Tahoe High homecoming festivities on Friday afternoon which culminated in a convincing win on the gridiron for the varsity Viking football team.

Looking for their first win during the 2014 football season, South Tahoe took their 0-6 record to the field against the team from Dayton. They scored 28 unanswered points after Dayton started off the game with a safety.

Today Kristen Spees announced the start of her congressional campaign’s I-80 District Tour throughout Northern Nevada.

Spees’ I-80 District Tour starting August 17th will be making stops throughout Northern Nevada, including: Lamoille, Elko, Duck Valley, Winnemucca, Lovelock, Battle Mountain, and Fernley.

To represent the citizens of the second district and understand all Nevadans concerns Kristen stated:

Top four candidates for Douglas County Manager job revealed

Douglas County is one step closer to having a new county manager now that the large field of candidates has been reduced to four. Former County Manager Steve Mokrohisky left in April to take a job in Oregon, and since then Douglas County has been searching for his replacement. They hired the recruitment firm of Peckham and McKenney to aid in their search.

Seven finalists seek job of Douglas County Manager; Public invited to meet them

The job of Douglas County Manager has been vacant since the departure of Steve Mokrohisky in April. He took the job of County Administrator in Lane County, Oregon.

His replacement has been narrowed down to seven candidates and the public has the chance to meet all of them during a reception on Monday, August 4 at the Carson Valley Inn Ballroom from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

South Tahoe High Varsity Baseball Team Headed to State Tournament

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team is headed to the Nevada State Division 1-A Tournament May 22-24 after taking 2nd place in the Northern Championships Saturday.

Friday's Northern Nevada Tournament action saw South Tahoe beat Number 1 seed Elko in the morning game, followed by Fallon beating Spring Creek in the afternoon and South Tahoe losing to the Fallon team in the nightcap.

South Tahoe had the morning game again on Saturday, in which they beat Spring Creek by a score of 10-8.

South Tahoe Vikings Host Division 1a Playoffs This Week

For the first time in 20 years, the South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team has made it to the Nevada State Playoffs. This is only the second time in school history for the team to make it to the post season, and the last time was in 1994, when current Viking coach Starbuck Teevan was a junior on the team.

They join Elko, Churchill County and Spring Creek in this weekend's Division 1a playoffs to be held Friday and Saturday at South Lake Tahoe's Todd Fields.

South Tahoe Vikings Fall to League Leading Elko

The South Tahoe Vikings Boys Basketball team lost to the visiting Elko team by a score of 51-43.

Elko is now 18-3 and South Tahoe 8-11.

Next game for the Vikings is against Spring Creek on Saturday, February 5th. The home game starts at 1:30 pm.

South Tahoe Vikings Holds Off 2nd Half Surge by Churchill County to Get 3rd Straight Win

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity basketball team won Saturday's conference game against Churchill County by a score of 71-67. As has been the case this season, South Tahoe came charging out with strong play on both sides of the court. The 3rd quarter box score had Churchill outscoring South Tahoe 12-8 but the Vikings rebounded with a 19-15 4th quarter.

Fundraiser Being Held for Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick

Zephyr Fire Crew Firefighter Kyle Van Mourick has been battling Guillain Barre Syndrome since becoming ill while fighting a wild land fire in Elko, Nevada in June. He has been hospitalized since.

An evening of fundraising to help Kyle in his fight of the disease is being held on Friday, December 6 at Himmel Haus Restaurant and Bar in South Lake Tahoe. There will be a German dinner of Bratwurst and Spaetzel, drinks and live music as well as a silent auction. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The doors will open at 5 pm with the dinner at 6 pm.

High School Soccer Round-up for the South Shore

This was a full weekend for high school soccer on the south shore. The Whittell Warriors and South Tahoe Vikings boys and girls soccer teams all made a showing at regional soccer championships, resulting in one team headed to state.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe appoints Fernando Vargas as executive director

Fernando Vargas, a 25-year veteran of Boys & Girls Clubs, has been appointed Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Tahoe.

Vargas, 54, brings extensive experience from Clubs throughout the country, most recently in Elko, Nev., to the position. His successful background with fundraising, fiscal management, strategic and youth development initiatives were cited by Jeff Tillman, Club President, as major reasons for his appointment.

Big fish caught at Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe record for Mackinaw Trout is a 37-pound, 6-ounce (44 inches in length) trophy caught by Robert Aronsen, way back in 1974. To date, only a handful of Macks have been caught that have weighed 30 pounds or more.

CARSON CITY – It took all of about ten minutes for Sen. Dean Heller and Rep Shelley Berkley to mix it up in their first debate in the U.S. Senate race Thursday, criticizing each other on campaign issues ranging from ethics to Medicare to big oil subsidies.

Proposed Legislative Discussion On Assault Weapons Derailed By Nevada Committee Vote

CARSON CITY — If there was any question about whether the gun debate is a controversial topic in Nevada as well as nationally, a clear answer was provided Tuesday at a meeting of the Advisory Commission on the Administration of Justice.
A proposed discussion on assault weapons was removed from the agenda by a vote of the panel before it could even begin.

Nevada Emergency Management, Homeland Security hold multi-county drills

A series of drills simulating emergencies such as extreme weather, power outages, aircraft mishaps, lost climbers and transportation issues will be performed this weekend as part of operation Green Light organized by the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and the the Department of Homeland Security.
Operation Green Light will further develop and strengthen regional partnerships and enhance emergency preparedness, response, and prevention capabilities, according to Nevada Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Gail Powell.

The newspaper headline on page one on Aug. 15, 2002 said it all:
“They made it!”
Yes, they did! And, they did it in record-setting style.
Four athletes, who are personal friends of Elaine and I, completed 10 very physically and mentally-demanding challenges in a period of 10 grueling days, way back in 2002.
I know because we were there for each and every one of those 10 memorable days that resulted in the very first Nevada 10-in-10 Challenge going into the Nevada record book.
Those four were Karl Horeis, Jeremy Evans, Rick Gunn and K. M. Cannon.
