Olympian Jamie Anderson gives back to kids on the South Shore

Jamie Anderson continued her Give Back With Love sponsorship program on Tuesday, by giving three local students a dream package of equipment and a ski pass.

Anderson wanted to be present to give the students their prize but, according to Sierra-at-Tahoe, Jamie has been tied up with the X Games and Burton European Open. They wanted to get the kids up on the hill as soon as possible so didn't wait for Anderson's return but she'll join them on the slopes once back in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe hosts Pac-8 collegiate hockey championships

Collegiate hockey is headed to South Lake Tahoe February 6 through 8 when the Pac-8 Championship is held at the SLT Ice Arena.

Defending 2014 co-champs Arizona State ended the season in first with a 9-1 record but will not be attending this weekend's tournament due to disciplinary action. “The Arizona State PAC-8 team has declined the invitation to participate in this year’s tournament due to a team rule violation," according to the Pac-8 website.

Historic Lake Tahoe ranch listed for $98 million

Check out Shakespeare Ranch, which takes up 133 acres along 423 feet of shoreline. It's named for Shakespeare Rock, which overlooks the property and is said to resemble the playwright.

Whittell High extends league record to 8-1 with win over Smith Valley

The Nevada State defending champs Whittell High School basketball team added one more win to the W column on Saturday with a win over Smith Valley. The Warriors' varsity team won the game 66-25.

The team from the South Shore has an overall record of 16-2 and hold a 9-1 Northern Nevada IV conference record.

There is one team from the north with a better record. Virginia City is undefeated at 9-0. They gave the Warriors their only loss on the season.

South Tahoe Vikings split games on road trip

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity boys basketball team scored 44 points in each of their two road trip games this weekend, but the games had differing results.

On Friday, STHS lost to Northern Nevada 1A league leading Elko 65-44. Junior Denzel Perez led all Viking scorers with seven points, followed by Seniors Stone Merkley and Matt Herring with six each.

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino opens in South Lake Tahoe

It was a huge project, remodeling an aging hotel and casino that hadn't seen glory days in decades. Many thought seven months wasn't going to be enough time to turn the old Horizon casino into a fresh and new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. All doubts were tossed aside Wednesday night as the epic rock and roll branded property opened up to large crowds, full bars and packed table games.

Sierra at Tahoe offers $49 Super Bowl special on Sunday

Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort has announced a unique way to spend the Super Bowl this Sunday with deeply discounted tickets and events planned for a day of celebration.

Super Bowl 49 will be a full day event at Sierra-at-Tahoe. People can ski or snowboard for as low as $49 for the day with the purchase of a lift ticket in advance. There are a limited number of tickets available for purchase on the website, Liftopia.

The tickets are 47% off the normal price.

Medals were elusive for two South Shore snowboarders in X Game Superpipe finals

South Lake Tahoe's Hannah Teter and Elena Hight both made it to the Snowboard Superpipe finals Saturday night at the X Games in Aspen, CO but were unable to turn their runs into medal contenders.

Teter, a six time X Game medalist, won the event in 2004 and came in third in 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2012. The 27-year old came in seventh this year with rounds of 51, 48 and 10.66.

25-year old Hight made her tenth appearance at the X Games this weekend. The five time medalist ended in eighth this year with rounds of 21.66, 46 and 32.

South Shore's Jamie Anderson wins Silver at X Games

South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson won her 10th X Games medal in Aspen, CO today, bringing home silver.

Anderson led the group of athletes in Snowboard Slopestyle through the first two rounds but failed to land cleanly on the last, allowing defending two time X Game Gold medalist Silje Norendal to win her third straight gold.

Today's event was Anderson's third straight X Game silver.

The Sierra-at-Tahoe snowboarder's medal count for X Games: 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze.

Maddie Bowman wins third straight gold medal at X Games

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman won her third straight gold medal Wednesday in the 2015 Women's Ski SuperPipe final at the X Games in Aspen.

She started off day one of the annual five day event with solid runs of 85.00, 78.00 and 85.66. The silver went to Ayana Onozuka (83.33) and a bronze to Brita Sigourney (78.66).

Bowman, who grew up on the slopes of Sierra-at-Tahoe, tied the late Sarah Burke's three straight X Game golds.

Defending state champ Whittell Warriors continuing winning ways

Palmer Chaplin's 25 points led the Whittell Warriors over Mineral County in prep basketball action on Saturday night. The Warriors scored in double digits each quarter, ending the game with a 59-36 victory.

Following Chaplin was Quinn Kixmiller with 17 and Bryce Bronken with 9.

Whittell's 7-0 league leading record (15-1 overall) is carrying them down the home stretch with remaining games against Virginia City (13-2) on January 23, Pyramid Lake (4-10) on January 27, Excel Christian (8-6) on January 30 and Smith Valley (2-15) on January 31.

South Tahoe High Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball teams lose on the road

Churchill County turned out to be a tough host on Saturday, with both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams from South Tahoe High losing their games. The boys lost 68-47 and the girl's team lost 33-22.

The Viking boys ran against a tough defense during their conference game but sophomore Harry Chakmakis-Moses was still able to score 13. His scoring output was followed by junior Denzel Perez's ten points and senior Kirby David's nine.

South Tahoe High Vikings get fourth straight win against Fernley

South Tahoe High's varsity boys basketball team has been racking up the wins over the last eight days, coming away with victories in the last four games.

Coach Joby Cefaul's Vikings beat Fernley on Saturday, January 10 by a score of 80-68. They started their winning streak on Saturday, January 3 when they beat Spring Creek 65-38, followed by Tuesday's win over Dayton (63-48) and Thursday's 68-58 win over Union Mine of Placerville.

Subaru WinterFest Kicks Off 2015 in South Lake Tahoe

The Second Annual Subaru Winterfest will be held at Sierra-at-Tahoe resort this weekend, January 3 and 4. Winterfest includes a Freeride Skills Course and equipment demos as well as the chance to meet an Olympian. South Lake Tahoe resident and Olympic Gold Medalist Maddie Bowman will be signing autographs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Subaru tent on Saturday. Bowman, 20, brought home the gold she won in the Women’s Ski Halfpipe in Sochi during the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad will once again offer service to the North Pole onboard THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride starting Nov. 21. Lake Tahoe Attracts Top-Notch Physicians

Physicians are in high demand, but not just from patients. With an impending physician shortage and more job competition, medical administrators and recruiters will spend hours attending meetings, networking, and recruiting to hire top-notch physicians.

In a 2012 study, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) estimated that physician recruitment costs between $75,000 and $90,000 per doctor. This does not include the time and effort to set up a medical practice and then to retain a physician.

Jeremy Roenick takes lead into final day of play at American Century Golf Championship

The crowds were out in force for round two of the 25th Annual American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe Saturday. The beach on 17 was packed as usual with boaters and sunbathers waiting for their chance to play games of toss and catch with the dozens of celebrities that always join in the fun.

King's Beach Fireworks

As is tradition, Kings Beach held their July 3rd Fireworks celebration Thursday night.

They had food and beer vendors, games, souvenirs and music.

New Toy Store Opens in South Lake Tahoe

France Carreau turned the disappointing closing of one long time business into the creation of another. Her dream store, Tahoe Toys & Treasures, opens in South Lake Tahoe on July 1st.

Carreau owned The Yellow Pager, the local AT&T store for two decades when she found out at the beginning of the year that she was being replaced as the local AT&T retailer. She turned the shock into the energy needed to create the type of store she'd always wanted, a toy store full of educational, organic and fun hands on toys.

Thieves Break Into South Lake Tahoe's Boys & Girls Club

Two years of hard work and fundraising by the teens at the Boys & Girls Club Lake Tahoe went out the window this weekend when an unknown thief (or thieves) broke into the club and stole the fruits of their labor, a brand new XBox system with games and controllers.

South Lake Tahoe's 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade Ready to Entertain

"I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival," the 2nd President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail. "It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other..."

Adams wrote of the country's celebration of America's independence on July 4.

Historical Marker Celebration at Echo Summit's 1968 Olympic Training Facility

The 1968 Olympics in Mexico City saw records fall and fists rise. Perhaps one of the more memorable Olympics all began at the training facility near South Lake Tahoe at the top of Echo Summit.

On Friday, June 27th a historical marker will be placed at the location of the Echo Summit training site in what is being called "Return to the Summit."

Kids Looking for Things to do This Summer? How About STAR Camp?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services department started their STAR (South Tahoe Adventure Recreation) camps this week. Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.
