The Sierra Avalanche Center is reporting a large (D4) slide that appeared to run during the rain on Monday, February 21 in Desolation Wilderness on the slopes of Mt. Tallac above Lake Tahoe.

The 1,000 foot long avalanche named Corkscrew Slide Path, started at an elevation of 6800 feet and was approximately 150 feet wide. Trees up to approximately 6 inches in diameter were visible within the debris at the end of the slide.

Rain and snow flows during the atmospheric river storm that hit South Lake Tahoe in January created more than double the normal flow through the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD).

On a normal 4th of July, when most beds are filled in local homes and motels, STPUD sees about five million gallons go through the sewer plant, but with the large amounts of snow and rain on roads and in yards, 12.57 million gallons flowed through the plant on January 8, 2017.

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - The weekend's heavy snowfall didn't do enough to bring good news during Tuesday's monthly manual snowpack survey at Phillips Station.

Frank Gehrke, chief of the California Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, led a media tour on January 3, 2017 to their normal spot near the turnoff to Sierra-at-Tahoe and found a snow water equivalent of six inches, which is 5.3 inches less that the average early-January total of 11.3 inches, 53 percent of normal.

Join the Lake Tahoe Historical Society at their next Fireside Chat event at the historic Camp Richardson Hotel on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m.

Besides the group's Fall General Meeting, speaker and author Carol Van Etten will present a visual history of steamships on Lake Tahoe. She has been a lifelong student of Lake Tahoe history, as well as boats on the lake, and has published three books on marine history.

Northern California has been drenched this month, giving the state the second wettest October on record since the Department of Water Resources began keeping track in 1921.

The Lake Tahoe Airport on the South Shore received 7.3 inches of rain in October, just over double of the monthly average of 3.54 inches. This water is helping to fill Lake Tahoe, which rose during the wet mid-October storm by over 3 inches, adding 11 billion gallons of water to the lake.

With three productions a year, and just seven degrees issued in five years, Lake Tahoe Community College is looking at eliminating their theater program and moving toward a community theater model.

Theater staff at the college were advised on Tuesday that LTCC administration is recommending to the Board of Trustees that they’re recommending discontinuing the theater program.

Over the past 1.5 years, administrators have been going through a process that included research on program vitality at the college.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is holding another one of their popular History Clubs on Saturday, October 22 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the museum. The History Club is designed for children to experience activities from the past, learn a new skill,
play a game, and use their imagination.

Due to limited class size, reservations are required. The cost is $20 per child.

Sign-ups are also being taken for the other two clubs on Saturday, November 4 and December 10.

The UCCE Master Gardeners of Lake Tahoe are holding a free workshop on how to plant and grow fall alliums with a focus on garlics and onions September 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden.

Steve Hale will portray Stephen T. Mather, first director of the National Park Service, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 10, at 6:30 pm.

Stephen Tying Mather distinguished himself as a consummate salesman, including the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, which helped him amass a fortune by the early 20th century. After visiting the new western national parks and meeting John Muir, Mather went on to mold the vision of the new National Park Service and was honored by being appointed its first director in 1916.

It is dark. It is 2:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15 at the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) in Placerville. It is early, but not too early to prevent a group of people to come see Camino resident Hervé Leconte leave on his 65-mile run to the EDSO building in South Lake Tahoe.

Former Sierra Sands school superintendent Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari passed away at his home in Ridgecrest, California, on June 14, 2016, at the age of 85. Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1930, Magliari, the son of an Italian immigrant, graduated in 1948 from George Washington High School, where he served as student body president. While attending Los Angeles City College Magliari enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called into active duty during the Korean War in 1951.

"This is fantastic," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David. "We get to show our visitors what a great sense of community we have."

Local author Todd Borg returns with his 14th Owen McKenna Tahoe Mystery called "TAHOE DARK", an intriguing tale of a young Tahoe house cleaner whose dreams of going to law school may be destroyed when she's arrested for murder. Todd will also sharing his writing techniques, inspirations and story lines in a very entertaining way. This is not to be missed. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Chautauqua is "the most American thing about America." Audiences will soon be able to see one of these historical, and entertaining, events on the South Shore when the Lake Tahoe Historical Society presents their annual Chautauqua at Lake Tahoe August 13 at 6:30 p.m. There is a cocktail party with fabulous appetizers at 5:15 p.m., which is included in the price of admission.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society would like to thank all the generous donors who honored Bob "Old Long Skis" Rockwell at a celebration of life at the History Museum Complex in South Lake Tahoe.

Memories of Bob were shared by his family and friends in front of the Osgood Toll House (OTH), the oldest standing commercial building at Lake Tahoe. It was Bob's desire to be remembered through Lake Tahoe's history. Over $4,000 in donations were received in his memory for the restoration of the OTH. Plans for the next phase were unveiled.

Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.

Patty Reed was 8 years old when her family joined the movement west to settle in California. As survivors of the ill-fated 1846 Donner Party, the tremendous hardships they endured left the family destitute. The little doll Patty hid in her clothing survives until this day.

The historical American character and humorist, Mark Twain is returning to Nevada and Lake Tahoe California, so be on the lookout for an elderly man with a distinctive mound of unruly white hair, wearing a white suit with an ever-present cigar in his hand. Actually, Rob Alvey, a professional geologist and adjunct Professor at York College in NYC is coming. Alvey, an award winning geologist with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Division is well regarded for his unique sense of humor and an uncanny resemblance to Samuel Clemens alter ego, Mark Twain.

The popular historical walking and biking tour through the Al Tahoe neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe has taken a big step forward and is now easy for everyone to participate.

Joining forces, the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Historical Society have placed permanent posts in nine locations through the neighborhood, all in spots where history took place.

"History Lives Here!" was rolled out in the summer of 2015 as part of the City's 50th anniversary celebration. Now with the posters placed on permanent posts, the historical spots are not only fun to find, but easy to see.
