South Lake Tahoe is opening doors for a new venture with TEDx, hosting the inaugural TEDxSouthLakeTahoe event on October 5, 2016 at The Loft in Heavenly Village from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

A local, independently organized event, TEDxSouthLakeTahoe is striving to create an environment which inspires individuals to think and engage on both a community and global scale, much like what is expected from the popular phenomenon of TED.

June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. And nine years later, the 2007 Angora Fire remains a vivid remember that wildfire is one of the greatest threats facing our environment, our homes, and our businesses. We must prepare accordingly.

Our region continues to take important steps to manage that wildfire threat, improve the health of our forests, and create fire adapted communities that are prepared for the next wildfire at Tahoe. But there is more work to do.

Leave No Trace events in South Lake Tahoe to raise awareness

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee and other Lake Tahoe organizations to host community events and educational activities June 6-13. As visitors flock to the outdoor recreation wonderland that is Lake Tahoe the trails, beaches and forests are experiencing an increase in use and the associated impacts of trash, trail erosion and shoreline degradation.

Lake Tahoe to make bid for 2015-17 Winter X Games

The 2015-2017 X Games could take place at Lake Tahoe. ESPN, which owns the X Games franchise, announced qualified entities representing cities and Lake Tahoe was listed among the eligible destinations. Finalists will be determined by April 2013 and host cities will be announced by the end of 2013, according to a news release.

North Lake Tahoe launches first-ever free ski shuttle

Getting to North Lake Tahoe’s snowy ski slopes just got a whole lot easier with the launch of the region's first area-wide free ski shuttle serving North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Summit.

The service runs between area lodging properties to 9 different ski resorts on weekends and holiday weeks now through March 31. It was formed through a collaboration of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association in partnership with the Truckee/North Tahoe Transportation Management Association and Placer County, the town of Truckee and several ski resorts.

South Lake Tahoe to save thousands using LED lighting

The city of South Lake Tahoe, known for world class skiing and outdoor recreation, can now add energy efficiency to its acclaim. Thanks to the federal stimulus funds, energy efficient lights were installed throughout the city.

About 150 lights at the Motor Pool Building and 88 street lights on Ski Run Boulevard were switched from incandescent bulbs to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). LEDs are more energy efficient and are longer lasting than traditional lights, saving the city money and maintenance costs.

Seasonal dog ban at Upper Truckee Marsh planned for late spring

For the second straight year the Tahoe Conservancy will enforce a seasonal dog prohibition at the Upper Truckee Marsh at south shore Lake Tahoe. The dog ban is meant to protect sensitive wildlife areas, including threatened and endangered species, during breeding season. The Upper Truckee Marsh provides critical breeding habitat. The dog ban begins May 1.

National Forests in California provide benefit to local economies

Outdoor recreation activities in California’s national forests contributed $2 billion dollars to local economies and helped sustain an estimated 38,000 jobs in 2010.

The U.S. Forest Service’s National Visitor Use Monitoring report released Aug. 19 shows that national forests attracted 170.8 million recreational visitors nationwide and sustained approximately 223,000 jobs in rural communities across the country.
