June 13-17 - State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Cascade Creek: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 2 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday and 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work and permanent erosion control.

Forest thinning project resumes near Fallen Leaf Lake
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/03/2016 - 5:14pmThe South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration project on 10,000 acres near Fallen Leaf Lake has resumed.
Crews with the U.S. Forest Service will be mechanically removing whole trees off Fallen Leaf Road near the campground over the next several months and the area will be closed for public safety.
The goal of the project is to reduce the risk of severe wildfire and create healthier forests.
City receives $3 million in grants for South Lake Tahoe projects

The money will be used for the following:
$1.8 million for design and construction of the Sierra Boulevard Complete Street Project
$510,000 for construction of the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt Project
$390,000 for purchase of a Sander vehicle replacement
$200,000 for the design and engineering of the Lake Tahoe Boulevard Bike Trail

Community weighs in on Lake Tahoe transportation issues

On Tuesday night in South Lake Tahoe, staff from the TTD, Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO) and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) held an open house at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel to get a pulse on the feelings of the public about transportation.
National Day of Civic Hacking to improve government-resident partnerships

This new partnership brings community members together through Code for America, a non-profit organization on a mission to make government services simple, effective, and easy to use. Code for America has launched more than 2,300 projects with 100 government partners. Local Code for America chapters are called brigades and are organized by local volunteers.

It is estimated that there are over 29 million dead trees and this number continues to grow on a daily basis. El Dorado County is not immune to this epidemic as there are thousands of dead and dying trees threatening public safety and infrastructure.

Attendees will meet at Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center for a day of discovery and fun. This plan that will answer some community member's concerns about the project by addressing right-of-way, housing, road construction, assistance and support for affected businesses, and continued community involvement.

May 24, 2016 - 6:30pm El Dorado County Habitat for Humanity’s “A Brush with Kindness” (ABWK), in South Lake Tahoe, will be holding a volunteer orientation meeting on May 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 pm. The Carpenters Local 1789 Hall has graciously donated the use of their building at 2720 Young St, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 for this event.
Volunteers are being recruited to assist low-income homeowners who need exterior maintenance work on their homes, such as painting, minor exterior repairs, yard cleanup, and minimal landscaping.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/11/2016 - 6:54pmThe City of South Lake Tahoe has released a "Flash Vote," looking for community input on ideas for both locals and tourists in the community. But, people only have two days to vote as "the flash" is over on May 13 at 1:15 p.m.
What small projects would you like the City of South Lake Tahoe add that would cost $10,000 or less? Would it be new lines on the soccer fields, or shelter around bus stops? Or, would you like to spend $10,000 on something new along the bike trails or city parks? The ballot also asks for other opinions and ideas and takes just a few minutes to complete.

Forest thinning project to be continued near Fallen Leaf Lake

Due to the heavy equipment needed, the Forest Service will issue a forest order closing the project area (units 1 and 148) to pedestrians from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

OMG Fun Run to take runners up Meyers Grade

Lake Tahoe’s two regional bi-state agencies for transportation, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), are inviting the public to attend interactive open houses this month to learn more about draft proposals to improve Tahoe’s highway corridors and share their ideas and input.
The open houses are Tuesday, May 17 at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach, and Tuesday, May 24 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. Both are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Marchesseau, originally from Montana, has lived in the Lake Tahoe region for more than 15 years and has worked in local interior design and real estate industries for more than a decade. In addition to being a Tahoe local, Marchesseau has sold and designed homes in both California and Nevada, and understands the complexities of mountain and lake living.
Bijou Bike Park Association receives proclamation at City Council meeting

"I didn't know this was going to be so successful so quickly," said Amy Fish, an active member of the association. "Our kids can now ride side by side with world class GoPro cyclists at the park."
Amy accepted the award for her husband Ben who was out of town on business. He is the President of both Bijou Bike Park and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Associations

The Lake Spirit Awards honor people making real progress at restoring Lake Tahoe. Created in 2011, the awards are a way to recognize those individuals whose passion for Tahoe results in progress and environmental improvements.
Upper Truckee River near airport closed to the public this summer: Rafting to be affected

To accomplish their final tasks, the meadow and river will be closed to the public for much of the summer in order to divert the water into the new channel, relocate fish and mussels, and finish up vegetation projects.

The South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) is currently in the process of preparing the 2016/2017 budget. We invite the community to participate in a Public Meeting and Presentation on the Proposed Budget and Capital Improvement Plan at the District Offices on May 12, 2016, at 6 pm.
In 2014, the District sent a five-year Proposition 218 notice to all customers; this permitted the District to increase water rates up to a maximum of 6.5% and sewer rates up to a maximum of 6.0%.

El Dorado County approves Safe Routes to School Plan for South Lake Tahoe

With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.
Public can comment on Negative Impact Study for Meyers water quality project

The County will administer rights-of-way to install the improvements to the existing storm water conveyance system which is comprised of channels, basins, culverts, inlets, and infiltration system.

Participants will be given free copies of scans on USB drives, and will have the option to donate a digital copy of materials for inclusion in the NLTHS’s databases, contributing to the visual history of Lake Tahoe.

New roads, campsites and building relocation at Camp Richardson

Officially named the Camp Richardson Resort Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices (BMPs) Retrofit, the result will allow the resort to meet current standards for water quality protection and increase universal accessibility to the area's activities.
Construction work resumes on Tahoe Basin highways

The $70.1 million water-quality improvement project is building new drainage facilities to collect and treat stormwater runoff, adding curbs and gutters, widening the highway and repaving an eight-mile section of Highway 89 between Tahoma and Tahoe City. Work this season will focus on the remaining four miles of the project between Eagle Rock and Granlibakken Road.

At the same time, some are shocked at the dilapidated condition of the built environment: rundown buildings, crumbling infrastructure, and tired-looking development. The paradox is compelling. Despite TRPA’s mandate to harmonize the natural and human-made landscapes so that they blend together, outdated development that preceded environmental standards now serves as blight in our community.

With the return of road improvement projects along Lake Tahoe and other Nevada roads, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol are reminding motorist to drive safely in road work zones, not only during this week which is National Work Zone Awareness Week, but all year long.
From July 1, 2014 to July 1, 2015, there were 166 crashes in Washoe County work zones, resulting in 53 injuries and two fatalities. Statewide in Nevada, these numbers were significantly hire during the same periord: 1020 crashes, 612 injuries and 12 fatalities.

Community collaboration helps to change the stigma of mental illness

Hosted by Barton Health, this year's forum participants shared the progress they've made on strategies for mental health and local service gaps that were generated during the 2015 event.
Jeanne Nelson from the South Lake Tahoe chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) was very pleased with the outcome Thursday.

Tahoe Prospertiy Center awarded for collaborative efforts
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/01/2016 - 9:51amThe Tahoe Prosperity Center received an award on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from the Placer County Economic Development Board for “Best Collaboration to Encourage a Prosperous, Sustainable and Healthy Lake Tahoe Basin.”
Certificates of recognition were also presented to the Tahoe Prosperity Center from Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, Senators Ted Gaines and Jim Nelson, and Congressma=en Tom McClintock and Douglas LaMalfa.
New parking lot, pathways and corral on tap for Zephyr Cove Resort this summer
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/29/2016 - 6:08pmConstruction is scheduled to begin May 1 in South Lake Tahoe at what is being called the "Zephyr Cove Resort Corral and Bike Path Construction Project." When completed, there will be 1,500 feet of new pathways between the stop light at Zephyr Cove Resort and Warrior Way, new paved parking areas and improved erosion control and water quality areas due to a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.
Column: Active Transportation Plan adopted for Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/23/2016 - 8:07pmThe Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in its capacity as the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, on Wednesday adopted an active transportation plan that will help communities continue to improve transportation options for bicyclists and pedestrians in the Tahoe Basin.
Transportation projects that improve infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians also help improve air and water quality, revitalize the economy, improve public health, and enhance recreation opportunities.
