You've heard about it for months, the preparations for it are wrapping up and the crowds are here to see it.

What is "it"? SnowGlobe 2014 is in South Lake Tahoe and the word has spread. While in the Bay Area Sunday, SnowGlobe was the lead story on my favorite newstalk radio, KCBS.

South Tahoe Now will be at SnowGlobe each night to see, and hear, the action.

Cardinale Way's free Thanksgiving dinners enjoyed by the community

Cardinale Way employees and family members prepared 400 Thanksgiving dinners for South Lake Tahoe area people in need of a meal on this holiday. They were up early, cooking turkeys and preparing meals to be handed out at the American Legion.

A tent was set up in the parking lot and a few hundred came by for a full meal. Smiles were plentiful, both from the hungry and from those who were able to help out.

Author of "My Father's Big Toe" to give readings and autographs

Stories for all ages make up author Johanne Carreau Cronk's first book, My Father's Big Toe, and now the book is available during a book signing and storytelling day at Tahoe Toys and Treasures.

The book is about world traveler and former South Lake Tahoe resident Gilbert Carreau and the stories he would tell his children as they gathered around.

Cardinale Way giving away 400 dinners in South Lake Tahoe

"We want to take care of everyone that needs it," said Cardinale Way General Manager Joe Caracciolo when asked what moved the South Lake Tahoe dealership to offer free Thanksgiving dinners for 400 people this Thursday.

From 10 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving, people who need a meal can go to the American Legion parking lot and receive a fully cooked meal which will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables and a roll.

Family Friendly: A trip to a Reno Bighorns game

I had always planned to drive off the hill to watch a Reno Bighorns game, but I never found the opportunity. That is, until this weekend. It's hard to believe they've been in Reno since 2008!

My son Chris won tickets by answering a Bighorn trivia game on a Reno radio station, so my daughter Abby and I drove down Friday night to join him and watch the season opener against the Iowa Energy.

Revolving door at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care's bear den

In what has become a very busy year at Lake Tahoe wildlife Care, another bear was added to their den on Friday after his mother was hit and killed on Hwy 89 near The Cantina on October 4.

Tom Milham, LTWC co-founder and Secretary/Treasurer, went on the air at all of the local radio stations on October 16, asking for the public's help in finding Gardner after several sightings in the Y area. When he got the call that someone saw Gardner near Anderson Bike Rentals, Milham and Fish & Wildlife showed up with a cage full of food. They safely got Gardner into the cage.

Speed dating met politics in South Lake Tahoe candidate forum

If the success of Thursday night's merging of South Lake Tahoe politics with speed dating is any indication, we should see many more forums done in the same format in the future. A much more educated and knowledgeable voter emerged from the evening's event at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Free admission to the 25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show in South Lake Tahoe

Air show officials have decided to drop the $10 entrance fee and offer free admission to all attendees for the 25th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show this Saturday, September 20th from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. at Tahoe Valley Airport in South Lake Tahoe.

Last year's air show was canceled due to heavy smoke from the Rim Fire. Officials are monitoring the King Fire's smoke and movement, but at this time there are no flight closures and the aerial performances and all on ground activities are still going to occur.

Festival favorite Bassnectar to perform at MontBleu

Bassnectar, who has played at South Lake Tahoe's SnowGlobe, will be performing at MontBleu Resort on November 6.

The Electronic Dance Music heavyweight has rock critics saying his shows are not only finely tuned auditory experiences, but feature unparalleled light arrangements and awe-inspiring visual queues.

Bassnectar is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, a San Francisco-based DJ, producer and artist.

1962 record making swim across Lake Tahoe relived

Some people, when they first see Lake Tahoe, think how it'd be nice to boat on top of the glass like water. Others imagine fishing on the lake stocked with big fish, while yet others think about how nice it would be to sit at the quiet and scenic shore and enjoy the sun and the view.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

Water issue expert to speak in Lake Tahoe

The Sierra Business Council is hosting Peak Innovation, a conference for Lake Tahoe locals, small business owners, communities and local governments. During the conference, Dr. Peter Gleick, an expert in water issues especially in the context of economic and environmental justice, will be at the conference which takes place October 8-10 in Tahoe City. In a National Geographic science blog, Gleick recently repeated the common question, “Why, if the California drought is so bad, has the response been so tepid?”

Grand Jury Report Released for El Dorado County: "Thread of Dysfunction"

The El Dorado County Grand Jury has released their final report for the 2013-14 year and several South Lake Tahoe situations have been brought to light.

According to Jury Foreman Neil Cunningham, the jury compiled 20 reports and recommendations which were created as they followed up on inquiries from citizens and Grand Jury required inspections.

40th Anniversary of Lake Tahoe Community College Celebrated

On March 5, 1974, the voters approved the formation of a college district that would serve students on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. For 40 years the Lake Tahoe Community College has been providing higher education for the community, and its successes and growth were honored in a ceremony Wednesday. Community members joined college staff, board members and students at the original location of the college, 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, which is now the home of the Econo Lodge.

Steve Harness Promoted to GM of South Lake Tahoe's KRLT and KOWL

Lake Tahoe resident Steve Harness has been promoted to head the team at KRLT 93.9 FM and KOWL 1490 AM as their new General Manager.

Harness has been with the company for seven years, serving as their DJ, Program Director and Operations Manager. He brings 20 years of radio experience with him.

Owner Joe Schwartz said “It was important to us to hire form with-in for this position. We need somebody running those stations who is part of the Tahoe community for the long-run and that is Steve”.

What would you do if you were losing your eyesight? This question wasn't a hard one to answer for Monroe, Louisiana resident Leslie Hestle. Her answer? Go to Lake Tahoe!

Suffering from gyrate atrophy since birth, Hestle knew that her eyesight was going away. People with the disease are usually totally blind between the ages of 40-60. One year ago she had cataracts surgery, giving her eyesight for awhile longer but without peripheral vision.

The South Lake Tahoe Winter of 51/52 and Other Great Stories

Dubbed the "All Star Panel," a group of long time local residents shared stories of a South Lake Tahoe most of us never experienced. The seven panelists have lived in Lake Tahoe a combined 600 plus years and shared some great stories with the overflowing crowd at Camp Richardson Lodge on Tuesday evening. In fact, the number of long time locals in the audience was very evident since their combined years of living in Lake Tahoe was over 1880!

LTCC Teachers Honored for Excellence

Lake Tahoe Community College English instructor Michael O’Laughlin and Sociology/Anthropology instructor Dr. Scott Lukas have both been honored for their outstanding work in the classroom. O’Laughlin was selected by LTCC students as their Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lukas was chosen by his fellow faculty members as the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. The winners will each personally receive $500 thanks to a generous donation by the LTCC Foundation. They’ll also each get to direct another $500 towards the LTCC program or scholarship or classroom materials of their choice.

Success at 4th Annual Sample the Sierra

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

Connecting the dots to Lake Tahoe prosperity presented at March 5 forum

In October 2012, all sectors of the Lake Tahoe South Shore community came together, shared knowledge and discussed a vision for economic revitalization. During that forum a collective voice was discovered on many issues.

Now we need to connect the dots. In the spirit of the TED talks that sparked a wildfire of communal knowledge and immediate action around "ideas worth spreading," the Tahoe Prosperity Center and TahoeChamber are holding a second economic forum March 5.

FAA says plane that left Minden-Tahoe Airport Wednesday is overdue

UPDATE: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident of an overdue plane from the Minden-Tahoe Airport.
A Cessna model 172, red and white in color, bearing tail number N328SP, left the Minden Airport Wednesday at around 5 p.m. The plane was piloted by 46 year-old Keith Jorgenson of Gardnerville. Jorgenson was the sole occupant of the plane.
