For Bread & Bread there is so much to be thankful for as the year 2020 comes to an end. The organization would like to acknowledge all of the members of the Lake Tahoe South Shore community who have so generously supported our efforts to feed and help those in need during this holiday season.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks community for Thanksgiving meal

Bread & Broth’s holiday Thanksgiving meal giveaway on November 23 was a tremendous success thanks to the kindness of many generous community supporters. In addition to the regular bags filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, eggs, butter, bread and pastries, 170 holiday meal “fixings” bags were handed out in the foyer of St. Theresa Grace Hall. The Thanksgiving meals went to 549 very grateful individuals and family members.

Bread & Broth seeks donations for South Lake Tahoe Community Thanksgiving meals

Bread & Broth is seeking donations for a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway that will be distributed on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at St. Theresa Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

During past Thanksgiving holidays, Bread & Broth has sponsored a hot Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings, once that guests could enjoy with the fellowship of others in the community. During those dinners over 250 individuals joined in the special holiday meal.

This year will have to be different due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Community food availability spots in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The local community has several different locations that offer food to those who find themselves needing extra groceries during not only the pandemic, but year-round.

The following is a list of locations at this time. All locations are in South Lake Tahoe unless otherwise noted:

produce, breads, and dairy (plus meat as available) will be provided. Families will receive additional bags.

Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High schools seek donations for reopening

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The Zephyr Cove Elementary Parents Club and Whittell Boosters are reaching out to the community for support in the safe reopening of the two Douglas County Lake Schools on August 31.

Both of the schools will begin the 2020/2021 school year on Aug 31 with in person, daily instruction utilizing social distancing and other safety protocols.

Bread & Broth and the Attic team up to provide food and supplies to the South Lake Tahoe community

Barton Health’s Attic Thrift Store is joining Bread & Broth in their efforts to help members of the community struggling during the economic downturn brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Attic Thrift Store is providing free clothing, home goods and toys for all of the clients coming to Bread & Broth’s food giveaways on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall, 1041 Lyons Avenue (one block east of the Tahoe Middle School).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine weeks into the COVID-19 crisis, Bread & Broth is still providing food to those in the community who are being impacted by the loss or reduction of income due to the temporary closing of many of our communities’ businesses. Thanks to many generous monetary donors and volunteers, Bread & Broth is providing bags of food through their Monday and Friday food bag giveaway program at Grace Hall and B&B 4 Kids program.

The time is here to place yellow jacket traps out in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It still isn't too late to prevent pesky yellow jacket interruptions of July and August picnics and outside dinners in Lake Tahoe. Now is the time to prepare by placing traps for the queens as they start to emerge from their winter hibernation.

The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.

Bread & Broth thanks community as need and program expands

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The commitment of Bread & Broth over the last thirty years has solely focused on the mission to ease hunger in the South Lake Tahoe community. That mission took on new meaning beginning in mid-March with the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak when record numbers of individuals seeking food assistance from the various programs and services provided by B & B.

Thanks to Vail’s EpicPromise grant and the wonderful and incredible Heavenly Mountain Resort Ski Services team members, Bread & Broth’s (B&B) dinner guests enjoyed a wonderful and nutritious meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall on Monday, February 10. Thanks to the generous $300 donation provided by the EpicPromise foundation, the B&B cooks whipped up a tasty meal of Chicken Picante, baked potatoes, green beans, and an avocado salad and servings of a variety of delicious desserts.

Kudos: Bread & Broth thanks MontBleu Resort Casino and Spa

Hosting their second Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) this year, Monbleu Resort Casino & Spa was the sponsor for Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on December 2. “It was a pleasure once again to lend a hand for such an important cause for our community,” shared Michael Carney. Michael, along with Montbleu Resort sponsor team members Mindy Bobadilla and Olimpia Nantz, volunteered three hours of their time to help the Bread & Broth (B&B) volunteers with their sponsorship dinner.

SnowGlobe 2019 adds ZHU to their lineup

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Right on the heels of the release of his new single "Came For The Low," Zhu has been added to the MTV SnowGlobe 2019 lineup in South Lake Tahoe. The three-day outdoor music festival will be in town December 29-31.

Steven Zhu is a Chinese American musician and singer who has been active since the beginning of 2014.

SnowGlobe announces 2019 lineup for 9th annual South Lake Tahoe festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - MTV unveiled the lineup for its 9th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival taking place in South Lake Tahoe December 29-31, 2019.

Skrillex, Fisher, Gigantic NGHTMRE, Griz, E-40, Louis the Child, Tchami x Malaa, Vince Staples, A-Trak, Earthgang and more set to take the stage at New Year’s celebration.

Local food pairings a hit at sold-out Sample the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you waited to the last minute to purchase tickets for the 8th annual Sample the Sierra you were out of luck on Saturday at Bijou Community Park. The popular festival of food, wine and beer sold out all pre-sale tickets prior to the event, and sold out of tickets at the gate just after opening, much to the disappointment of many.

1,500 full tasting tickets and 50 children tickets were sold. Those lucky enough to get in moved from booth to booth, each with either a wine, beer or alcohol paired with food, or a local artisan and their wares.

Smart & Final grand opening in South Lake Tahoe starts with $5,000 donation

Smart & Final Extra! held a grand opening on January 18, marking their return to South Lake Tahoe. The new store was built in the former home of Staples after they closed in June, 2016. There was a complete overhaul of the 24,000 square foot store from the foundation up.

Smart & Final teams up with Azul and Tahoe Youth & Family Services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - This Saturday, January 14, 2017, Smart & Final will be hosting "Winter Warm Up" on the patio of Azul Latin Kitchen at Heavenly Village from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as a fundraiser for Tahoe Youth & Family Services.

The agency has served South Lake Tahoe since 1971 and was chosen by Smart & Final to be the beneficiary of sales from hot chocolate, coffee and a trail mix bar.

There will also be culinary demonstrations with Chef Jamie Gwen and the non-membership warehouse grocery company will have representatives on hand.

Smart & Final holding job fair in anticipation of January opening in South Lake Tahoe

Smart & Final is planning their return to South Lake Tahoe and plan on moving into the remodeled Staples building on Highway 50 by mid-January, 2017.

The Southern California based business will be holding a job fair for those interested in working in the local store on Tuesday, November 15 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.at Harrah's Tahoe. Applications can be downloaded on their website and brought to the job fair, or into the store once it is opened.

South Lake Tahoe Staples reportedly closing in June

Staples may soon follow in the steps of Office Depot and become the second stationery "box store" to close its doors in South Lake Tahoe.

Even though unconfirmed with the corporate offices, employees at the store said they will be closing their doors on June 4, 2016. When South Tahoe Now spoke to store management we were referred to the corporate offices who have not returned calls.

Now is the Time to Prevent Colonies of Yellow Jackets in Your South Lake Tahoe Yard

The yellow jacket queens have already been seen in South Lake Tahoe, and if you don't want your backyard volleyball game or summer picnic ruined by them, now is the time to take action.

The queens are the only bee colony member to hibernate in the winter. She emerges in spring and begins to look for a suitable place to build a nest and begin her new colony. By the end of summer one colony can have 4,000 to 5,000 yellow jackets.

So if you take out one queen, you eliminate thousands of bees.

South Tahoe High Alum Performs with UCLA Band on Premier of Amazing Race

The UCLA Bruin Marching Band will open up the 24th Season of The Amazing Race on Sunday, February 23 and a local young man will be part of it. South Tahoe High Graduate Thomas Smith, son of Michael and Madonna Doyle and Tom Smith, plays the trumpet with the Bruins. The Biology major is a Freshman at UCLA.

While at South Tahoe High, Thomas was involved in theater, music and dance.

You can see him on the very opening of this clip. Smith is the 2nd one in, near the 20 yard line, in the diagonal leg of "R."

Labor Day weekend fishing report for Northern California and Sierra

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in the Sierra, Northern California and Nevada. This report is for the week of Aug. 28 through Labor Day. Don't forget, California's second free day of fishing without a license will be Saturday, Sept. 7.

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.

South Tahoe Chamber to host a business mixer

The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce will hold a business mixer on Thursday, March 21. Borges Chiropractic and Tahoe Valley Pharmacy will host the event, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Tahoe Valley Pharmacy center, 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd. (across from Staples near the “Y”).

The event is open to chamber members as well as the public and is free.

There will be food and prizes, including a pair of sunglasses valued at $160 donated by Lake Tahoe Eye Care. Other sponsors for donations include Tahoe Valley Pharmacy, Borges Chiropractic and Ross Groelz, DDS.
