South Lake Tahoe Earth Day celebration on Saturday

In typical South Lake Tahoe fashion, Mother Nature has decided to visit the local Earth Day celebration on Saturday. While sunshine may be preferred by some, needed moisture will be making a visit.

Don't let a forecast of rain or snow keep you from Earth Day 2015 though. As seen in the video in this story, snow fell just prior to last year's event too.

Soup and salad bar opens in South Lake Tahoe

It took several more months than planned, but Soup Tahoe is now open on the South Shore.

In September, South Tahoe Now announced that SUP Tahoe would be converted into Soup Tahoe during the non-summer months where stand up paddling isn't as popular.

"There were many more regulations than we first figured into our business plan," said owner Eddie Smith of the delay in opening. Smith and his wife, Kimberly, got the doors opened to Soup Tahoe last week.

Outdoors with Don Q: Sigh, so-called 'Man's Favorite Sport' belongs to Elaine

Last Thursday, Elaine and I spent an enjoyable morning (as usual) fishing for Mackinaw (Lake) Trout at Lake Tahoe with our longtime friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!

Outdoors with Don Q: Mackinaw fishing at Lake Tahoe with two friends

On Thursday morning, July 12, I went fishing at Lake Tahoe for Mackinaw (Lake) Trout with two friends, Rob Boehmer and Thomas Strong, both of whom live in Carson City.
Boehmer had booked a trip with my longtime good friend and sport fishing guide, Gene St. Denis (“Gino”) of Blue Ribbon Charters (530-544-6552) at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Boehmer called me several days prior to July 12 and asked if I would like to accompany him and Strong on their fishing trip with Gino.

Memorial Day weekend could begin with rain, light snow and end with warm sunshine

A low pressure system headed for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra on Friday may turn the early part of Memorial Day weekend into a carbon copy of last year's holiday with some rain and light snow. It would be par for the course given this strange weather year at the lake. The good news though is the unseasonably cool temperatures associated with the weather system should blow out of the area by Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Don Q Outdoors: Mackinaw fishing with first timers at Lake Tahoe

Sunday, May 20 was a memorable day for two of our friends. The two friends are Stephanie Parker (our neighbor) and her brother George, who was visiting our area from Phoenix, Ariz.
Stephanie is fairly new to Carson City and to our neighborhood, having moved here from Las Vegas, where she lived and worked for many years.
When I first discovered that George would be visiting and that he is an ardent fisherman, I asked Stephanie (who also fishes) if the two of them would like to try Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.
Without hesitation, she said, “You bet. Yes, we would!”

Plenty of snow at Lake Tahoe for spring skiing, snowboarding

It's been a weird ski and riding season, for sure. One indication is that Heavenly Mountain Resort is only operating the Boulder base lodge and the Boulder and North Bowl lifts on weekends. In all the years I taught at Boulder never has had a shutdown like this. Too bad because lots of locals liked Boulder as out-of-towners didn't go there very often. Thus, parking was close and runs not crowded.

Tahoe ski conditions ideal in time for 10-day Winter SnowFest

It just doesn’t get any better. March came in like a lion, with a series of storms leaving 4 feet of new snow at North Lake Tahoe ski resorts’ upper elevations. The National Weather Service is predicting that the weather will change Friday with sunny, clear skies for the weekend.

Winter seasons filled with Granlibakken ski lodging packages

Tahoe's original ski resort, Granlibakken, near Tahoe City, is lodging central in 2012 with various ski and stay packages for seven area resorts.

“How much more warm weather and sunshine can we take,” laughed Kay Williams, deadpanning over last season’s epic seven-month winter and 700+ inches of snow. “Sure, various ski resorts like to be the first to open or last to close, but we want folks to know that we’re ready with early-season offerings.”
