Series of small earthquakes in region Thursday night
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/06/2019 - 11:02pmResidents north of Lake Tahoe, Reno, Washoe City, Carson City and Dayton have been responding to a group of earthquakes Thursday night, the largest one a 3.7 magnitude trembler that was centered just east of Washoe Lake at 9:49 p.m.
Between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Thursday:
1.1 magnitude 5.6 miles N of Tahoe City at 2:46 p.m.
2.3 magnitude 5.4 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:43 p.m.
0.8 magnitude 4.8 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:49 p.m.
2.4 magnitude 4.8 miles WNW of Mt. Rose at 8:51 p.m.

Six South Lake Tahoe residents part of record 617 graduating class at WNC

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford addressed WNC’s graduating class during its commencement ceremony.

1982 Mt. Rose murder solved through genetic genealogy
Submitted by paula on Sun, 05/12/2019 - 12:48amOn July 17, 1982, the body of a woman was found off of a hiking trail in the Sheep's Flat area near Mt. Rose just a few miles above Incline Village, was found. There was no identification or jewelry on the victim and investigators could tell by her clothing she may have been headed to Lake Tahoe when she was murdered.
And there was no suspect.
For over three decades, both her and her killer's identity have been unknown but with new DNA technologies, hard work by a team of law enforcement investigators and genealogists, the case has been solved.

North Lake Tahoe security guard arrested on 403 felony counts

Just after midnight on Thursday, April 25, deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call from the Crystal Bay Casino. Security guard Richard Britt called the deputies for assistance with an unwanted subject at the North Shore property.
Drug money allegedly motivated man accused of murdering Gardnerville women, Reno couple

Wilber Ernesto Martinez-Guzman was arrested on Jan. 19 in connection with the four murders of Gardnerville woman Connie Koontz, 56, Gardnerville woman Sophia Renken, 74, and South Reno Couple Jerry and Sherry David, 81 and 80.

Truckee Fire sells their airboat to Washoe County Hasty Team for $1
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/02/2019 - 3:24pmThe Truckee Fire Protection District sold their airboat used for in-the-water rescues to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Hasty Team for just one dollar. This important piece of equipment can be used for missions on shallow bodies of water such as Swan Lake and could also potentially be used to speed response time for ice rescues, particularly in areas where thin ice is an issue.
When the Truckee department acquired a new boat for their uses they transferred ownership to Washoe County who had borrowed the boat in the past for help at the Reno Air Races.

South Lake Tahoe man headed to prison for destruction of archaeological sites
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/26/2019 - 7:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After illegally digging at prehistoric Native American archaeological sites on federal lands in Alpine and El Dorado counties, 50-year-old Timothy Brian Harrison of South Lake Tahoe was sentenced today to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay $113,000 in restitution.
He was found guilty on two counts of excavation and removal of archaeological resources from public lands and one misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.

Search ends for missing skier at Heavenly Mountain Resort
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/19/2019 - 10:32amUPDATE 12:30 p.m. - Heavenly Ski Patrol, with the assistance of a K9 search dog, have located the body of Brett Herrick in the Aries Woods, about 100 feet from the groomed trail. He was immersed in deep snow and found at about 10:00 a.m.
Initial investigation indicates Herrick crashed into very deep powder and could not self-rescue and likely suffocated or died from exposure. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The next of kin has been notified.
Snow and traffic continue to cause problems on Lake Tahoe roads

When open, there has been a constant flow of both westbound and eastbound vehicles over I80 and US50. Reports of 10-15 hour trips from the Bay Area have been common.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/14/2019 - 7:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District get to start their winter break a day early as they will have a Snow Day on Friday, February 15.
In an announcement Thursday, Christy Blach, the LTUSD transportation supervisor said the extreme weather this afternoon and in the forecast for tomorrow led them to the decision for the safety of our students and staff.
All LTUSD schools will be closed next week for Presidents Holiday Break. Schools will resume a regular schedule on Monday, February 25th.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 reopened to eastbound and westbound traffic this morning about 5:00 a.m. with R-2 chain controls still in effect from Point View (just above Placerville) to Meyers.
Expect extra vehicles on the roads in South Lake Tahoe as US50 is the only main artery over the Sierra that is open at this hour.

According to the arrest report, Guzman told investigators that firearms stolen from the house of Jerry and Sherri David, the elderly South Reno couple found murdered in their home, were buried in the area of Sedge Road in East Carson City.

January 20 has been a day full of weather, from rain and thunder snow, to white-outs at the ski resorts and breezy conditions.
Both Kirkwood and Heavenly Ski Resort had to close some ski lifts earlier today after lightning was striking in the area and Sierra-at-Tahoe closed early due to high lightning potential.
Suspect in all four Northern Nevada murders in custody
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/20/2019 - 2:47pmUPDATE 1/23/19 - The suspect in the quadruple murder in Northern Nevada was in the country illegally from El Salvador when he was arrested on January 19, 2019. Tips received by law enforcement led them to Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, and as they built a murder case they started to tail him. Immigration officials were unaware of Martinez-Guzman until those tips came in.
Officials did not want to lose the suspect and arrested him on immigration charges as the investigation continued and the murder case developed.

Washoe County Sheriff releases names of Reno homicide victims

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office today said 81-year-old Gerald David and his wife, Sharon David, age 80 were killed in their home. Next of kin have been notified.
Both victims died as a result of gunshot wounds, similar to the method used in the two recent Douglas County murders.

Similarities between Douglas County and Washoe County homicides
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/17/2019 - 6:11pmRENO, Nev. - Keeping the community safe is the number one priority of law enforcement working on four recent murders in Reno and Douglas County. This was the message from Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam during a press conference late Thursday afternoon.
Two elderly people, a man and a woman, were killed in a home in southwest Reno. Their bodies were discovered on January 16 after concerned neighbors called law enforcement after not seeing the residents. Their names and ages have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Up at the North Shore, Truckee Tahoe School District schools are closed. All school activities are cancelled unless notified otherwise.

James Byron Cleveland was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) after they responded to a Carson Avenue residence on a call of an injured woman on Sunday, January 13, 2019.
Victims in Topaz Lake and ATV incidents identified

The recovery efforts resumed today on at 9:00 a.m. by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine 7 and search and rescue units, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Specialized Vehicle Unit (SUV) and their HASTY Dive Team, and Wardens from the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. Marine 7’s ROV located the body of Jesse Gregory, 50, at a depth of 22 feet.
The surviving fisherman, Scott Wise, has recovered and was released from the hospital.
Boat capsizes in Topaz Lake; One dead, one missing
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/12/2019 - 6:16pmUPDATE 1/13/19 12:30 p.m. - Douglas County Sheriff's Office has released the names of those involved in the boating accident. One boater, Scott Wise, was able to get to shore while a search began for the other two occupants. Rescue teams located the body of Burt Pederson of Sparks, Nevada, a man in his 40s according to DCSO. Jesse Gregory, also of Sparks, is still missing and presumed to have drowned.
Wise was treated at the Carson Valley Medical Center for treatment. He has since been released.

Also on the list are residents of South Lake Tahoe, Marla Bay, Zephyr Cove and Stateline. To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Missing snowshoer located off Tahoe Rim Trail
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/07/2019 - 10:50am2:45 p.m. update: Search and rescue teams spent Sunday night dredging through deep snow and in very windy snowy conditions to locate the missing snowshoer Raymond Murdock.
The initial search for Murdock was called off in the early morning hours due to the snow and avalanche conditions, resuming Monday morning at 6:00 a.m.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team called in the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office was made for additional personnel and Raven for aerial observation.

As the beginning of fairly strong weather system has just hit the Sierra, there are not only chain controls but also a series of collisions and spinouts. The storm shouldn't have surprised anyone as warnings have been in place all week.
As of 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019, chain controls are up on all mountain roads around Lake Tahoe on the California side, expected to be going up soon on the Nevada side.
Jet arrives in South Lake Tahoe via highway
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/11/2018 - 1:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) escorted a wide-load road truck and semi-trailer that were carrying an unusual cargo, a F-14 Tomcat. CHP picked up the escort at the Nevada-California state line on SR-88, helped it over Luther Pass on SR-89 and then to US-50 with a destination of the Lake Tahoe Airport.
When at the airport it was lifted off the truck, over trees and down to the tarmac.
Filming on the South Shore for new movie: Could it be Top Gun 2: Maverick?
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/07/2018 - 9:47amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At the recent Tahoe Chamber Blue Ribbon Awards there was a slide in the presentation about the South Shore being a location in the filming of the sequel to Tom Cruise's epic Top Gun movie.
But since that day nobody can be found that can officially confirm this.
Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/04/2018 - 9:37pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.
Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.
Karl James Hildinger ~ 5/30/31 - 11/11/18
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/22/2018 - 3:42pmKarl James Hildinger was born in Danville, California on May 30, 1931. Jim passed away at home, surrounded by family, in South Lake Tahoe on November 11, 2018.
Three weeks after he was born, he was carried into Angora Lakes Resort in a Washoe papoose basket. He was a staunch environmentalist and spent his lifetime protecting and preserving Angora and the greater Lake Tahoe Basin. The Angora Lakes Resort remains in the family.
