Income for casinos on the South Shore rose again in August, 2016, recording a 26.66 percent gain in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago. This was the biggest gain of any area in the state of Nevada, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Their gain in gaming revenues was $5,033,378, the highest percentage gain in Nevada. This is the second month in a row that the South Shore casinos posted the biggest increase in the state.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Barton Women's Health will be hosting 'For Women, By Women,' a women's health lecture presented by Dr. Clare Rudolph on Tuesday, October 4 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Due to a venue conflict, the 2016 FireFest will be held at Hard Rock Casino Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

A controversial proposed 550-site campground on the ridgeline of the Lake Tahoe Basin at Brockway Summit appears to be history as the US Forest Service announced today that they have entered an agreement to purchase the 120 acre site between Truckee and Kings Beach.

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge is hosting their 15th annual Kids' Fishing Derby on Sunday, September 18, at Tahoe Paradise’s Lake Baron. Families find this event fun and exciting, and it is free to all children under the age of 16. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. at Lake Baron, near the main entrance.

Hot Dogs, Chips, Sodas, and water are provided free to all registered children and are available for purchase by others. The event wraps up at 1:00 p.m.

The South Tahoe Chamber will be holding their annual golf tournament at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Tuesday, August 23. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m., shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. This is a player scramble/best ball format.

Entry fee is $95 and covers the player's green fees, cart, range balls, awards luncheon and contests. The theme is pirates and everyone is invited to decorate their carts and come dressed in their favorite pirate finery.

The 25-year-old iconic "Welcome to Nevada" signs from highways around the state are going to be raffled off to some lucky residents.
The Nevada Department of Transportation is replacing the old, obsolete signs, depicting a lone miner that once greeted travelers to the state. They held a recent contest for Nevada high school students for the design of a new series of signs.

Golf and Justin Timberlake fans will have to get up early to follow the popular celebrity over at Edgewood Tahoe on Friday.

Timberlake, paired with good friend Alfonso Ribeiro, will tee off at 6:50 a.m. The singer/actor golfed in Tahoe on Wednesday, then flew to San Diego to participate in Comic Con 2016, and will be back for an early round of golf. Timberlake plays the part of Branch in the soon-to-be-released animated movie, Trolls.

As practice rounds at Edgewood Tahoe begin on Tuesday for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, the odds makers have come out with their list of the favorites, and the not-so-favorites.

Former MLB All-Star pitcher Mark Mulder, the defending champion, and newly-retired pro tennis champion Mardy Fish are listed as co-favorites by the Harrah’s and Harveys Race & Sports Book to win the tournament.

Two time MVP of the NBA, Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors is headed to the South Shore to play in the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship July 22-24.

Last year, Curry had to pass because of the birth of his second child Ryan. This year, he was due to play for the USA in the Olympic Games, but with an injured right knee he has decided to stay home, and opened the doors to play in Tahoe.

In just over a week, the eyes of sports fans will be on Lake Tahoe as the 27th annual American Century Golf Championship opens at Edgewood Tahoe. The field of 86 celebrities from sports, television, music, stage, screen, politics, Nascar, and the US Marine Corps are all headed to the South Shore July 19-24 to play.

"The golfers anticipate getting the invitation letter to play," said Former NFL Head Coach and ESPN Analyst Herm Edwards. "We get excited at that moment."

Income for casinos on the South Shore was down again in May, 2016, recording a 15.12 percent drop in gaming win when compared to income from a year ago, the highest percentage drop in Nevada. They had a "win" of $13,709,097.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

For the fiscal year, the local casinos continue to be off from last year, with a drop in the gaming win by 4.75 percent.

The Sierra Business Council announced the winners for their annual Sierra Vision Awards, and a South Lake Tahoe business and its owners were on the list.

They give out the awards to recognize and honor leadership in restoring and invigorating our local economies, communities, and environment.

Four new projects in South Lake Tahoe will be moving forward after the City was awarded $3 million in grants from the federal government through TRPA's Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization (TMPO).

The money will be used for the following:

$1.8 million for design and construction of the Sierra Boulevard Complete Street Project
$510,000 for construction of the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt Project
$390,000 for purchase of a Sander vehicle replacement
$200,000 for the design and engineering of the Lake Tahoe Boulevard Bike Trail

Retired Staff Sergeant Andrew Bachelder, a decorated veteran of Iraq and the ongoing war in Afghanistan, has been added to the American Century Championship field of celebrities for their annual Lake Tahoe tournament July 19-24, 2016.

Bachelder earned a spot by winning the George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Warrior Open this past October in Irving, Tex.

With thousands of fans lining the streets of Santa Rosa, Team KATUSHA’s star sprinter Alexander Kristoff (NOR) catapulted to a stage win, his eighth of the season, by a rim over all-time Amgen Tour of California stage win record holder Peter Sagan (SVK) of Tinkoff, who had spent much of the 109.1-mile day in a breakaway. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease™ Women’s Race Empowered with SRAM also spent the day in Santa Rosa, with cycling’s winningest woman Marianne Vos (NED) cinching the victory for Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team.

The sprinters’ teams were stunned Monday at the Amgen Tour of California as a tenacious two-man breakaway succeeded with Ben King taking top honors in stage 2. The 27-year-old Cannondale rider timed his sprint perfectly to come past Rally’s Evan Huffman in the final meters to win the 148.5km stage and earn the GC lead in Santa Clarita. It was only his third career pro win, and the first American win at the Amgen Tour in two years.

Sierra Nevada College on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has been awarded a five year grant to develop infrastructure for health-related research and STEM education in the state of Nevada. The National Institutes of Health program grant was given jointly also to the University of Nevada, Reno; UNLV, College of Southern Nevada; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; University of Nevada School of Medicine; Western Nevada College; and Truckee Meadows Community College.

During their April 19 meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s Safe Routes to School Master Plan. With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.

The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V & T) is the most famous of all American Short Line railroads and dubbed the "Queen of the Short Line." The American slopestyle snowboarders reigned supreme at the 35th edition of the Burton US Open on Friday. Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, MI) scored his first major slopestyle win and fellow Michigander Eric Beauchemin (Grand Blanc, MI) finished right behind him in second. On the women’s side Jamie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, CA) took home her third-consecutive US Open title and Karly Shorr (Milford, MI) took second.
