16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces awardees of $84,000 in grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced their 2019 grant recipients. This year, there were over 27 organizations who applied for the grants, with $84,000 being distributed to 14 non-profit organizations

Focus Grant recipients in the category of Poverty, Housing, or Basic Needs (up to $10,000 each):

Basic Household Essentials)

Volunteers needed for South Lake Tahoe Science Expo

The 2019 Science Expo being held at Lake Tahoe Community College by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center is still in need of volunteers for the event between April 2-5, 2019. Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. No experience necessary, just a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth.

Training will be provided on April 1 5:30 p.m. at the college or prior to each Science Expo shift.

South Tahoe High grad honored at Kiwanis Youth Convention

South Lake Tahoe native Kylee Lyons was honored with the Distinguished Appointed Board Award, First Place in Mei Po Wong Overall Service, and Second Place in Outstanding Total Service Hours at the California-Nevada-Hawaii Circle K International (CKI) District Convention this past weekend in Los Angeles. Lyons was the 2018-2019 Small-Scale Service Chair of the CKI chapter at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she is studying to obtain a bachelor's degree in Psychobiology, aspiring to become a Physician Assistant.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six women were honored this week by the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club for their work in the community.

Ruby Award - An award created in honor of the first Soroptimist Federation President, Ruby Lee Minar. The gemstone ruby is associated with wisdom, importance, vitality, strength, power, and love. This year's recipient is Amy Jackson, someone who is always working for the future of Tahoe's youth in education, sports, and life

Azul Latin Kitchen raises almost $17,000 for Live Violence Free in 2018

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Each year Azul Latin Kitchen selects a local nonprofit to be the recipient of their fundraising for the year. In 2018, Live Violence Free (LVF) was the recipient of that generosity and today were presented a check for $16,917.50 at a ceremony at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The popular restaurant in the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe had Tahoe Youth & Family Services as their nonprofit of choice last year and Tahoe Arts Project will get the funds in 2019.

Angel of Tahoe turns 90 -Treated to a big birthday party and fireworks

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe, celebrated a milestone birthday with 160 of her friends at Edgewood Tahoe on Wednesday.

The woman who is responsible for giving away millions of dollars to the South Lake Tahoe community was given something back, a lot of love and appreciation.

Planned by her close friend and caretaker, Ricky Reich, no detail was left undone and her favorite color pink was evident in all of the flowers and decor.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund has $84,000 to give away to community nonprofits

Applications for $84,000 in grants from the Tahoe Women's Community Fund are now available and will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019. The Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff joined others in the group to have such a generous amount to give away this year.

Any non-profit organization that serves the South Shore of Lake Tahoe is welcome to apply to one of the "areas of need" described below. Organizations that received a grant in 2018 from TWCF, are ineligible to apply. Each organization may submit only one application.

SnowGlobe teams up with Waste-Free Earth, Sugar Pine Foundation and others for sustainable festival

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many see the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe differently - some as a concert, others as noise. What many don't know is the sustainable platform organizers have established over the years.

Each year SnowGlobe and their partners Waste-Free Earth, Chris's Cleaning, Full Circle Compost and South Tahoe Refuse work together on reducing and reusing the waste created at the festival, and with the Sugarpine Foundation to plant trees for future forests.

South Lake Tahoe playfields protected by mats prior to arrival of SnowGlobe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In less than one week thousands of electronic dance music and festival fans will flock to South Lake Tahoe for th eighth annual SnowGlobe Music Festival which runs December 29-31.

Before anything started to be assembled at the Community Playfields on Al Tahoe Blvd., which are home to SnowGlobe, three different types of mats went onto the field surface to protect it from damage, almost 240,000 square feet total. In 2017 the new fields suffered major damange before local youth ever got a chance to play on them, something SnowGlobe organizers repaired.

The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association (STAHA) Grizzlies are hosting a weekend of hockey December 15-16 at the Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for their U10, U12 and U14 teams. Opponents include the San Jose Sharks junior team, the Cupertino Cougars and Santa Clara Blackhawks.

The Grizzlies are a youth developmental travel ice hockey program who participate in the Norcal Youth Hockey League. Their 14B team is undefeated and is bringing their 10-0-1 record into the weekend's play.

Cannabis ordinance may be in place in South Lake Tahoe by March 2019

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new city council had to tackle the big issue of a cannabis ordinance during their first meeting together on Tuesday, an issue that had been before the previous council numerous times. Two versions of an ordinance were presented but neither passed muster in the eyes of the council and they hope to have one that addresses their issues come before them at their January 15, 2019 meeting.

Vail Resorts gives $1.9M to 93 Tahoe-Truckee area nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During their annual community grant EpicPromise celebration, 93 local nonprofits were awarded a total of $1.9 million in cash as well as additional in-kind product support. Across the company, Vail Resorts will give $11.4 million in support to more than 250 community non-profits over the upcoming year.

Each year Vail gives away money and product to groups serving the communities they have resorts located. For Kirkwood, Heavenly and Northstar, support was given to support the health and resilience of the Truckee and South Lake Tahoe communities.

Catch Handel's Messiah this season in the Lake Tahoe area

50th annual Optimist Club Tree Lot in South Lake Tahoe

For 50 years the Lake Tahoe Optimist Club has been selling Christmas trees in South Lake Tahoe to raise funds for local youth.

Stop by the corner of Lakeview Avenu and Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a dose of holiday spirit seven-days-a-week. There is free popcorn and hot cocoa for the kids as you start off on that journey to find the perect tree. The annual tree lot is open from 12:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends.

The Optmists have a selection of Grand Firs, Noble Firs, Silver Tips and Douglas Fir trees.

The holidays will be brighter for South Lake Tahoe youth because of the work at both Live Violence Free and the South Tahoe Association of Realtors (STAR).

Parents question safety at Sierra House Elementary after school reopens soon after fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire that destroyed a hallway, reading room and teacher's room on Sunday, November 11 was just seconds away from engulfing all of Sierra House Elementary. Had it not been for the quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District the discussion would be about replacing the 44-year-old South Lake Tahoe school rather than the processes involved to get it cleaned up and opened in just two days.

Volunteers will be in front of Kmart at the Y in South Lake Tahoe with a vehicle from Jim Bagan Toyota and the goal is to stuff it full of toys for local youth.

Reno Jazz Orchestra presents "A World of Joy"

South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The holiday fun run, the Turkey Trot, was resurrected by the Lake Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless this year and their first event was a successful one.

Organizers were hopeful in their goal of 100 runners, but almost 150 participated in the 5k run in South Lake Tahoe on November 18. Those 10-and under ran in the Gobble Wobble, a trip around the SLT Recreation Center with the length dependent on age.

The top three places for men and women each won a turkey and the youth were awarded medals.

South Lake Tahoe youth fundraising for dogs and cats

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four local young ladies are continuing to help the South Lake Tahoe community with their fundraising efforts to help different needs on the South Shore.

For the 2018 Christmas season Maiella and Milan Riva, Lily Demus and Simone Sitchon will be collecting items and money to help both Lake Tahoe Humane Society and El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Last year the four girls collected clothing and toys for local foster youth and in 2016 they collected gloves, hats, socks, coats, and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe signs land lease, first step for new clubhouse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community could see a new Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe as early as Spring 2021.

During their November 13 meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board voted unanimously to approve a ground lease between them and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT), enabling the nonprofit youth club to build on a lot owned by the district adjacent to their current location at Al Tahoe Elementary.

American Century and LTVA award almost $79k to South Shore nonprofits

Twenty-six local nonprofits were awarded $78,974 Thursday in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship thanks to funds raised during the 2018 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

“The continued support from our partners American Century Investments and NBC Sports means so much to this community,” said Carol Chaplin, president and CEO of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “These contributions benefit so many in the South Shore a long time after the tournament ends.”

Over last 20 years, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe donates over $1M

Through generous contributions made to the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) club during their annual wine tasting events, the club has been able to give back to the local community over $1,040,822 in scholarships, awards and grants.

Missoula Children’s Theatre auditions coming soon for Robin Hood

Tahoe Arts Project has brought Missoula Children's Theater back to South Lake Tahoe November 5-10, 2018. This season's performance is Robin Hood.

All children age five and above in grades K-12 are invited to the tryouts. No advance preparation is needed.

Auditions for Robin Hood will be held on Monday, Nov. 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Tahoe Valley Elementary School's Multi-Purpose Room. There are roles for approximately 60 children in K-12th grade.
