Kudos: Heavenly hosts Monday Meal Dinner

With the coming of winter, the folks at Heavenly Mountain Resort are working hard to gear up for the upcoming ski season and hoping for lots of snow and great snow conditions on the mountain for this winter’s skiers and snowboarders. In the middle of all this planning and preparation, a crew from Heavenly Mountain Resort joined the Bread & Broth volunteers to provide a great meal for the diners at Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on October 9 at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall.

As Commander of American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe, it is my pleasure to report to the South Lake Tahoe community, as well as areas beyond who assisted in this gigantic task, that we have been successful in raising all the funds needed ($64,105) to replace our outdated roof on our building.

Community Hub 5 holding annual Fall Harvest Fest at South Lake Tahoe Library

Bread & Broth 4 Kids holding Cram-a-Hearse to gather food for kids' program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - St. Theresa's Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) program is holding a Cram-A-Hearse on Saturday, October 28 at Grocery Outlet in South Lake Tahoe from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Help fill a real hearse with food for local kids in need.

BB4k fills about 160 backpacks full of food every weekend for local school children including three dinners, two lunches, two breakfasts, and snacks.

Grocery Outlet is located at 2358 Lake Tahoe Bl., South Lake Tahoe.

October’s Did You Know Campaign: Counterfeit Pills & Fentanyl

This month the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) is sharing facts and information to educate the community about fentanyl and counterfeit pills.  Fake pills or counterfeit prescription pills are purposely made to resemble legitimate medicines but instead are made of illicit fentanyl or an illicit fentanyl analog.

North Tahoe Fire invites stakeholders to wildfire plan update meeting

Unite for Israel with prayer, good deeds and charity

In the wake of the recent terror attack in Israel that saw over 1,000 innocent Jews brutally murdered, Chabad Jewish Center at Lake Tahoe is hosting a Pre-Shabbat unity and prayer rally at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct 13. This event will bring the community together in prayer and will serve as a strong statement of solidarity with the people of Israel amid the ongoing war in Israel. Followed by Kiddush and hot chicken soup.

North and South Lake Tahoe communities to join together in support of the people of Israel

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temple Bat Yam of South Lake Tahoe and North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation will be joining together over two evenings in support of the people of Israel.

North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation will hold a vigil on Tuesday, October 10 at 6:15 p.m. They are located at 7000 Latone Ave, Tahoe Vista.

Temple Bat Yam will gather on Thursday, October 12 at 6:15 p.m. They are located at 3260 Pioneer Trail.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As inflation has increased food prices by 24 percent since the beginning of the pandemic, it has imposed significant hardship on those least able to afford the higher costs of essential food. To help those most impacted by the food price increases, Bread & Broth (B&B) offers hot meals twice weekly to any individual who comes through our doors to enjoy the Monday Meal served at St. Theresa Grace Hall or Second Serving every Friday at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church.

El Dorado Community Foundation announces Amy Pooley as new executive director

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado Community Foundation has announced Amy Pooley as the selection for the incoming executive director for the El Dorado Community Foundation.

Currently serving as the executive director for CASA El Dorado, she will join the Foundation with a proven track record of championing community needs, developing relationships, and making positive impacts in our region.

Veterans TOT grant cycle open for round two of funding

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Nonprofits working with veterans are eligible to apply for grants during the month of October through a partnership with El Dorado Community Foundation and El Dorado County. The funds are from the County's Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

Grant requests of up to $10,000 will be considered by organizations that did NOT receive funding during the first cycle of this grant in August 2023.

Kudos: Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation grant supports Bread & Broth

In August, Bread & Broth (B&B) was awarded a Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation Grant designed to provide financial resources to continue the organization’s efforts to respond to the issue of food insecurity in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. The awarded $15,000 grant will support two of the organization’s programs, the B&B 4 Kids Weekend Food Bag program and the “Green Goal” project. Since Bread & Broth is an all-volunteer organization, all grant monies will be used to purchase food for program recipients.

Basic Vehicle Maintenance 101 taught at LTCC this month

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A hands-on vehicle maintenance class is being held through Lake Tahoe Community College's Connect program on Saturday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The class is being taught by John Gomez of Tahoe Driving Academy and will provide students with the ability to learn on their own cars, something unique to vehicle maintenance classes. Gomez plans on taking participants to the parking lot during the workshop so they can learn on the spot on their own vehicle.

Vendors sought for Festival of Winter Lights in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Festival of Winter Lights returns to South Lake Tahoe on Friday, December 8, and Saturday, December 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. It will be held in the parking lot of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center.

This event will feature the museum's annual Holiday in History, Borges winter carriage rides, a lighted outdoor winter market, Santa's house and kids activities, holiday music performances, and hot food and wine.

Bob Baunhauser Unsung Heroes recognized at celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Six people were recognized as the community's unsung heroes during a recognition ceremony sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the South Tahoe Chamber.

The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.

Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers turn out to revitalize a meadow and creek

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – Sawdust drifts into a small pile as a volunteer cuts a fallen log into six-foot lengths. Around her, a team of five is busy lopping pine boughs and carefully placing timber across a narrow stretch of Saxon Creek in the community of Meyers, mimicking the work of beavers who once lived there. If they’re successful, this “beaver dam analog” will help restore the creek’s natural, meandering course, filter out sediments that degrade Lake Tahoe’s clarity, and invite the beavers to return.

American Century Championship awards 52 area nonprofits with $121,250

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) distributed $121,250 in funds to 52 area non-profit organizations as a result of the 34th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

Chase International Foundation awards $12,000 to local non-profits

20th annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kid's Fishing Derby

It is time for the 20th annual Kid's Fishing Day at Lake Baron. The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge is hosting the event on Saturday, September 23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All of the fishing gear is provided, or you can bring your own.

The Derby is free for all kids under the age of 16. There will be free hot dogs, chips, soda, and water for all registered children, as well as a raffle ticket for great prizes.

Those fishing are encouraged to support the lake's Catch and Release program by catching lots of trout, and keeping two!

As part of this camp, Tahoe STEM Academy partnered with the Edgerton Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and hosted MIT instructors, undergraduate students, and alumni to act as mentors and instructors for the members of BGCLT participating in the camp.

Free vaccination and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe office of the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe is hosting a free vaccination and microchip clinic for dogs and cats for residents of the South Shore from South Lake Tahoe to Glenbrook.

Ask us about spay/neuter vouchers for your dog or cat. For more information, call 530-542-2857.

The free microchips are made possible by a grant from the Latrobe Fund.

All dogs must be on a leash at all times, and cats kept in their carriers.
