South Lake Tahoe City Council approves additional $500K for expanded Lake Link service

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Lake Link microtransit service is being expanded in South Lake Tahoe. The next phase will move the service area west along US50 to Lodi Avenue, encompassing the Tahoe Sierra (Sierra Tract) and Highland Woods neighborhoods.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the additional funding of $500,000 to support the expanded service which is provided by the South Shore Transportation Management Association (SSTMA).

FREE Learn to Skate Session

As winter approaches and activities begin to shift indoors, the Tahoe Ice Arena is offering a FREE learn to skate class for kids aged 4-9 years old. This class is designed to teach the basics in balance, learning how to fall, get back up, and basic strides. The FIRST CLASS is FREE and all others classes after December 9th are $10. Participants should dress warm, wear gloves, and a helmet. Bike, snowboarding, ski, and skate board helmets are fine. Participants who purchase any Learn To Skate Session can attend the Public Session afterwards for free in order to work on their skating.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Christmas Engine schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue's popular decorated fire truck will start making its holiday rounds on December 10, with the last stops on Christmas Eve. The truck will leave Station 1 at 5 p.m. nightly.

It will be at the City of South Lake Tahoe/Lake Tahoe Historical Society Festival of Winter Lights on Friday and Saturday, December 8 and 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sponsoring their second Adopt A Day of Nourishment for the year, Tahoe Green Dispensary hosted the Monday Meal on November 27. Even though two of the planned Adopt A Day sponsor crew members were unable to attend due to being under the weather, the sponsor crew arrived with two ‘substitute’ team members to replace the ailing Tahoe Green Dispensary employees.

45th annual South Lake Tahoe Cancer League See's Candies sale

Lake Valley Fire releases holiday truck schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Valley Fire Department has been busy putting on all of the holiday decorations on their fire truck so they can make the rounds this season. This year, they are trying to add a Santa Tracker, so once available it will be posted here and on the fire department's social media.

NTCA to allocate up to $5.8M in funding projects, programs, and services that benefit community

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On December 6, the North Tahoe Community Alliance will officially launch the Annual Grant Cycle as part of its Community Investment Program. Designed to fund projects and programs for one year, with the potential to kickstart longer initiatives, this grant cycle is geared toward projects ready for immediate implementation upon approval.

Festive Tahoe Trail of Lights returns for 2023

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Everyone is invited to join in on the magic of the holidays during the 2023 Tahoe Trail of Lights. As the holiday season approaches, it's time to brighten our community with festive lights and cheer!

2nd annual Holiday Tree Lighting at Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The kids that attend the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) were treated to an evening of fun Wednesday during the 2nd annual Holiday Tree Lighting.

Santa and Mrs. Claus were the hit of the night that also had treats and hot chocolate, face painting, crafts, a photo booth, and a station for writing letters to Santa.

The benefactor of the new BGCLT clubhouse, the late Lisa Maloff, loved celebrating the holidays with the kids, and her favorite color was pink, so her memory was evident with the tree and its pink lights.

Kiwanis of Lake Tahoe distributes 500 coats to South Lake Tahoe children

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new, warm coat is something many take for granted each winter, but for a large group of South Lake Tahoe locals, that isn't always a possibility. The generosity of the Kiwanis of Lake Tahoe Club provided 500 coats and socks to local students over the past few weeks through its Coats for Kids programs.

Kiwanian Margie Kovarik-Maxhimer spearheads the program and works with Operation Warm, Costco, FedX, and other partners to get the coats at a good price and then free shipping to South Lake Tahoe.

Andy Tube Tribute to honor South Lake Tahoe man killed in car crash

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The family, friends, and co-workers of Andy Martinez are still grappling with his death from a two-vehicle collision on Pioneer Trail on July 5, 2023. The recent high school graduate had worked at Tube Tahoe during the prior winter and his former employer, Tube Tahoe, has created the inaugural "Andy Tube Tribute."

On Friday, December 1 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tube Tahoe will honor Andy by sending the first tube as a tribute, and kick off the season in his name. There will be hot chocolate and sweet treats provided by Lake Valley Fire.

Douglas County celebrating the holidays with community parties, parade, and concert

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Join the Town of Gardnerville ON November 30 for their 17th annual Gardnerville Christmas Kickoff. All of the holiday fun takes place at the Heritage Park Pavilion starting at 5:30 p.m.

There will be food, entertainment, music, a Christmas light show, and fireworks. Take an electric carriage ride around the park with the family and build memories that will last a lifetime.

Take Care Tahoe asks people to store “Take it Slow, Tahoe” signs for winter

With winter weather on the way, Take Care Tahoe is requesting that all “Take it Slow, Tahoe” yard signs be removed and stored indoors for the winter. Over 1,000 yard signs, which were distributed to the public in May, were posted in neighborhoods throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin to remind drivers to slow down for pedestrians, cyclists, and wildlife.

Knights of Columbus holding Sock Drive

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Knights of Columbus St. Theresa Council 10611 will be holding a sock drive to help those in need in the South Lake Tahoe community through the month of December.

Boxes will be placed around the community and at St. Theresa Catholic Church for donations of new socks, the most requested and needed item at homeless shelters.

Help out someone in need by donating a pair or a pack of socks. The socks will be given out directly to those in need at the Bread and Broth Monday meal on January 8, 2024.

Lake Tahoe woman starts fundraiser to wipe out local medical debt

Did you know there is currently $24M in medical debt in California, with counties close to El Dorado and Placer counties making up over $3M of it? A local woman has created a fundraiser that, for every $100 donated, $10,000 in medical debt is wiped out, and for $10,000 donated, $1M in medical debt is wiped out.

According to https://ripmedicaldebt.org/, El Dorado County residents have $309,340.98 of medical debt.

Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe start campaign to build new accessible playground

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has announced the launch of a $350,000 community playground campaign, “Let the Kids Play,” to upgrade the Al Tahoe playground.

The current Al Tahoe playground is over 25 years old, having been built in the late 1990s for Al Tahoe Elementary School and the community surrounding it. Since the elementary school closed in 2004, there have been no upgrades or improvements to the neglected playground, resulting in many areas now being boarded up, decrepit, and unsuitable for play.

Tree lighting at Heavenly Village brings out the crowds, fireworks, and Santa Claus

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The official lighting of the Christmas tree at Heavenly Village on Friday brought out the crowds to watch Santa Claus arrive as the tree was lit amidst fireworks, entertainment, and speeches from some elected officials.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in grand style aboard the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue ladder truck. Their arrival captivated the audience, setting the tone for an evening full of holiday cheer and community spirit. The Clauses made their way to the stage, greeted by the excited cheers of the whole crowd, young and old.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The rain may have kept some people away, but spirits weren't dampened for those who took place in the Unity Walk along Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

About 80 people, young and old, made the walk from the Lake Tahoe Unified School District parking lot to Champion’s Plaza. At the plaza, Mayor Cristi Creegan and others spoke about what it meant that the community was taking a stand against hate.

Rabbi Jeffrey Glickman and his wife Mindy of South Windsor, Conn. have been traveling the country, meeting other Jewish communities along the way.

They stopped by to visit with Rabbi Evon Yakar and the youth of the temple, connecting them to the larger Jewish community, and giving them a special gift - a Ner Tamid medal.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) hosted the 50th Annual Wine, Beer, and Food Tasting Golden Gala Fundraiser on November 3, 2023, at the new and wonderful Tahoe Blue Event Center. After a three-year hiatus, the event was an overwhelming success, raising funds for our community. Funds raised during this event are allocated to scholarships to students from local high schools and Lake Tahoe Community College and grants to local nonprofit organizations that enrich the lives of women and children in our community.

Kudos: Vail EpicPromise Grant funds Kirkwood Mountain Adopt A Day Sponsorship

In each community where Vail has ski resort facilities, the community's non-profit organizations can apply annually for Vail’s EpicPromise grant funds to support their organization’s mission. Bread & Broth has been a fortunate recipient of grant monies since the inception of the EpicPromise Grant program.

Used book blowout at the South Lake Tahoe Library - $5 a bag!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Friends of the Library Used Book Sale continues in the library lobby until Thursday, November 30. Great bargains are yours for just five dollars a bag on tables, under tables, in the bookcase, and on carts. Can’t fill a bag? Make a small donation for the books you want.

Cash only and place the money in the black box next to the bookcase.

Under the tables you'll find some free books for children (while supplies last) and free Reader’s Digest Condensed Books.
